Honda to extend Button's contract? 18 March 2008 Jenson Button could soon sign a three-year extentoion to his Honda Formula 1 contract according to our colleagues at ITV Sport. Honda F1 CEO Nick Fry has said that the team was confident of securing a new deal with Jenson Button for the long-term. "Our relationship with Jenson and his management is absolutely first class," Fry told ITV. "He's really been an important part of pulling the team of people that we've now got together. Obviously he's looking towards the future as well, and our objective is obviously to make him world champion. Jenson and the Honda team really are locked solid together." Fry furthermore was impressed with Button's quality as a racing driver. "He has really improved year after year, and even though last year was a difficult year for us, I think as a driver and an individual he continued to develop," he said. "He's certainly someone we want on our side." But a new contract is not expected to be signed within weeks. "I think later this year. There's no big hurry - we've got a great relationship with each other and we can take our time."

Milan & Brazil At Odds Over Kaka AC Milan and Brazil could be set to clash if Kaka is convened to play at this summer’s Olympic games in Beijing. Although the Olympics conclude before the start of the 08/09 Serie A season, the Rossoneri not only want their Brazilian superstar to get some much needed rest - especially considering his well documented knee problems - but the chances are that he will also be required to secure qualification to the Champions League proper. Milan will need to go through a preliminary phase if they finish outside of the top two this season, which considering that they trail Roma by 15 points is looking like a virtual certainty. Kaka has said recently that he would be open to playing at the Olympics should Brazil call him as one of their three over-aged players. However Rossoneri boss Carlo Ancelotti appeared less than happy about the idea when asked yesterday. “Kaka at the Olympics? Playing a [Champions League] preliminary round without Kaka would not be the best thing,” said Carletto. “I think that some discussion about it has been made or will be made. Surely we will need talk about it both with the Brazilian Federation as well as with him.” Milan face a struggle to even make the Champions League preliminaries, as they are currently in fifth place in Serie A, four points behind Fiorentina who hold the final ticket to Europe’s premier club competition.

Seedorf: Maldini Proves Age Is Not Important Clarence Seedorf has hit back at those who say that Milan are too old, and says that Paolo Maldini proves that age is not important. Seedorf was talking to UEFA.com about Holland’s chances at this summer’s European Championships in Austria and Switzerland. Holland have a very young squad, in contrast to Milan, who consist of players mostly above the age of 30. “We will have to see because there are a lot of talented players who could become champions,” Seedorf said when asked about the Holland youngsters. “Only a few of them actually do make it. For example, at Milan we have Alexandre Pato and we need to ensure that he develops away from pressure. He needs space to grow and learn from his mistakes. “However, age isn’t a key factor – the desire to be competitive is. Look at Paolo Maldini – he’s 40 and is still the best. Holland have been drawn in the so-called ‘Group of Death’ at Euro 2008, and will play Italy in their opening game. Seedorf will come up against a number of his club colleagues, including the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso and Massimo Oddo. “At the moment I really don’t know how it will be to face my teammates, but it will certainly be good to take part in the tournament,” he explained. “We were knocked out of the World Cup and didn’t win our European Championships qualification Group so we are fully aware that it will be difficult.”

Casillas: We Can't Throw It Away Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas believes that his side's lead at the top of the Primera Liga is so commanding that it's theirs to throw away... The stopper was annoyed in the aftermath of his side's dire performance in A Coruña against Deportivo, but went on to state that the title race was still in their own hands. "We are well aware that we did badly in A Coruña," he told Marca. "But it's just as true that we're in a comfortable position - one that we've earned since the Liga began - and we are in the driver's seat. "If we fail, we are the ones who lose the Liga, not other teams. I can assure you that after losing at Coruña in the way that we did, the team is determined to face Valencia and Sevilla to pick up four vital points for our league challenge." On the upcoming matches, he warned, "Teams are playing with the European spots increasingly in mind, so no games will be easy. "If Valencia lose last week, they're in big trouble. Therefore we also have to fight, and know that we're doing so for the league." Squad Concerns The goalkeeper spoke out in defence of his manager, who "also suffers" along with the players. "He suffers just as we do," explained the Spanish international. "That's a good thing, though, because it discourages us from losing. "This is his first year at Real Madrid and he's determined for us to win the Liga. Anyone who doesn't see the best results in their work is understandably upset." He added that the absence of Ruud van Nistelrooy - who is set to return for the visit of Valencia at the weekend - has hurt the team due to the Dutchman being "a major player." Barcelona? However, this was a secondary concern, with the squad as a whole being of more import - if not the team creeping up behind them again. "We always conduct self-criticism when we lose, not simply because Barcelona are chasing us," he grumbled. "The most important thing is to talk. It's easy to do it when things are going well, but it's more important to do so in days like that of A Coruña. "We must not blame anybody. The group must be more united than ever in order to attain its common goal of the Liga. We'll talk, and we'll be self-critical, in order to do that. "Ronaldinho? That issue doesn't really worry me. What bothers me is that our squad does its best in all matches." "We can't look for any excuse to say that Ronaldinho has caused a crisis. The Barcelona squad is excellent, and full of key players - that shows by the way that they're still in three competitions," he concluded.
