Cindy Crawford stops at Children's - 28 January 2011 While in town to support the grand opening of Morris Home Furnishings in Springdale, Cindy Crawford stopped by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Corryville on to present a check from proceeds of the sales of her new furniture collection. Morris Home Furnishings is the only retailer in Ohio carrying the Cindy Crawford line, which launched this month. After touring the cancer research labs, Crawford met with MeiLing Rumping and her 6-year-old-daughter, Hannah, who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in 2007 and was treated at the hospital. "Even just a few years before that it would've been difficult to detect, but because of the labs they have here, they were able to quickly find it and start a treatment plan," MeiLing said. Crawford said donating to a children's hospital known for its research has special meaning for her. Her younger brother, Jeff, died of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) when she was 10, and Crawford has focused her fundraising to help hospitals, bone marrow donor centers and other organizations that provide research, education and patient services for leukemia and other childhood diseases. "At the time it was 'How long can we keep him alive?'" Crawford recounted. "Now, almost 90 percent of children with ALL are cured. We spend all this money on research ... and it does add up." Although Crawford isn't as much of a household name for Hannah's generation - "I was on one episode of 'Wizards of Waverly,' " Crawford joked about the Disney Channel show. "That gained me some street cred' in the playgrounds" - the kindergartener connected with the mother of two over Barbie dolls and discussing how Hannah's name is spelled the same forward and backward. The donated check, presented by Morris Furniture president Larry Klaben, was generated from a portion of the sales at a preview event held Jan. 12-14 and the projected sales of Cindy Crawford Home items during the grand opening, which goes until Feb. 8. The company plans to continue donating funds to the medical center, as it has with hospitals near its Dayton and Centerville showrooms. The world-famous fashion model has other houseware brands, including the Cindy Crawford Style line of bedding and accessories at JCPenney. Crawford said she has worked with designers to make sure the furniture line reflects the style and attitude of the regions where it is sold - oversized furniture is popular here - but the overall feel of the living room, bedroom and dining room pieces leans toward Crawford's laid-back California lifestyle. "I live in blue jeans," she said of the inspiration for the line's denim slipcovered collection. "And I love leather, especially with kids.
