Mourinho applauds Real effort Jose Mourinho praised the "mental strength" his Real Madrid side showed to nab an injury-time equaliser against AC Milan. Pedro Leon struck deep into stoppage time to earn Real a 2-2 draw at the San Siro to preserve the Spanish club's unbeaten record under Mourinho. Real had earlier taken the lead on the stroke of half-time through Gonzalo Higuain but were caught off guard by a brace from veteran Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi. The 37-year-old thought he had secured a famous victory for Milan with his second goal coming in the 78th minute, only for Real to push forward to grab a dramatic equaliser. "A coach can only take risks when his team is psychologically ready to assume them," Mourinho told the club's official website after the game. "The most important aspect of the game was that my team assumed its coach's risks with ten minutes left on the clock. My men showcased courage and mental strength by starting the game with a defence comprising Marcelo, Ramos, Pepe and Carvalho, and by later playing with Pedro Leon, Ozil, Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema and Di Maria together on the pitch. "We are still undefeated and we didn't lose a game tonight we didn't deserve to lose. We've reached the next round and we are one point shy of becoming group leaders." The "Special One" may have had special praise for his team's comeback but he was less than impressed with referee Howard Webb's decision to let Inzaghi's second goal stand which he thought was offside. "Howard Webb is a very good referee. I'd be happy to have him on the pitch in all my games, but he made a mistake awarding Milan's second goal. We all make mistakes. He is a fantastic referee," Mourinho said. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Real manager was the centre of attention on Wednesday as the match marked his return to the San Siro since he left Inter Milan in the summer to manage the Spanish outfit. Mourinho, who is not one to shy away from making a headline or two, wasted no time in reminding the San Siro crowd who had gathered to support Inter's city rivals AC Milan just how successful he had been in Italy. A three finger salute in reaction to boos directed at him by the crowd reminding everyone of Inter's 2009/10 Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia Treble.

Why was it difficult to fit into the team at the beginning? A little because of the language. Now the communication with the coach is impeccable and I know exactly what he wants. I am working with a german company that has a new method of teaching the castilian language. I am working several hours a day learning the language. Breakfast, lunch, after practice. We do things together, and like that I am learning faster. Another difficulty was the difference between spanish football, which is faster, and german football. What does Mourinho expect from you? He expects from me to build a major axis with Xabi. It is difficult to explain the exact function. It is necessary to build a strong axis, to play and to defend without spaces, so that the team is always together. A good defense wins titles. Xabi, a high quality player, plays more behind than you. Should it not be the other way round? Xabi and I complement each other perfectly. He is excellent, very precise in passing and with a great shot from 25 meters. But the very moment there is a gap in the match, I know I have to be there and go for it. And this also happens the other way round. In fact, we both have the same functions. We are depending on each other. It's like a match inside a match. So you complement each other well? The communication goes from good to better. Our movements have been automated and everyone knows, what to do and when and where we have to be. I always followed Xabi's matches in the Champions League. He is a great strategist in the field, intelligent and a fighter, someone I can learn a lot from. He has everything, a great football player needs to have. How did you get to know that Real wanted you? My agent informed me. It was a surprise, that you have been visiting Mourinho in Valdebebas, being still a player of Stuttgart. How did this happen? It's a secret! Through the back-door (laughs). I still had not started my vacation and Mourinho had already contacted me by SMS. I was intrigued to know, what he wanted of me. How was the conversation? It was short. He convinced me in three minutes! Love at first sight? Indeed, (laughs). He was very compelling. Was the locker room at Madrid what you expected? Everything is bigger and more pompous than in Stuttgart. I was impressed. It is more professional and pleasant. And there's a great atmosphere. I prepared myself mentally to the fact, that I was going to play with some of the stars of Spain. Then, when I arrived, I found a great family. Who was the great example of your childhood? There was only one. Zidane. When did you see him playing the first time? In the World Cup 98. I was 11. That was a great team. And there I saw, how genuine he was. And your first memories of Real Madrid? When I saw them at the 2002 Champions League final against Leverkusen. Although Real was always present in my life, like in that of all children. The information generated in Germany is constant. How did you feel when they were comparing you to Ballack? Ballack was injured before the World Cup. It was bad luck, especially because he is the captain. It can happen to everybody. I wanted people to see me, present myself to the world. And I knew this was my opportunity. I did not try to imitate him, only to complement him with my style. Did Germany need to ignore Ballack, as Spain did with Raul, to step forward? (Thinks) Cases were different! Ballack was injured. The thing about Raul was, that there were younger players. Maybe it looks like it, that Ballack will not play anymore, but this is not the case. He is still our captain. The sport sometimes is like that, when a player is not well, the spectacle must still continue... What did it for Germany, that the National Team is so young and full of mixed cultures? The nicest thing is that football brings people together. For us it was a responsibility to represent Germany at this time because we knew that off the field we were creating something special socially. The whole world saw another image of Germany, not the typical you all have in your heads. An image of a multicultural, young, talented team, that serves as an example - and an new lust for life. Do you follow politics? Obviously. It is an important issue, right? An incredible moment was, when Mrs. Merkel went to the dressing room and shook Özil's hand. It was something to remember. We are all very proud at this moment. Are you religious? Muslim. Together with Özil, Diarra, Benzema. Do you do a ritual before matches? That is personal to each one. I do not take it too seriously. I fulfill the common rules and rituals, but do nothing that may be unique before matches. Your mother is german and your father tunesian. How did they meet? My father visited a friend who was married with a German. It was his first contact. And then he stayed, without speaking any german. What does this mean to you? That was a tough time for him. But it is an example of overcoming. He worked in a metallurgical company. For me he served as an example, that something impossible could turn into something possible. Was your father playing football? Yes, he was a goalkeeper, but he never became a professional. What is the best advice he gave to you? The values of life. Especially to be sincere and that you should always follow your dreams. This actually influenced my motivation, to get better all the time and so I joined the team of Real Madrid. You entered the Stuttgart Football Academy with eight years. Have you been bigger than the other boys, like now? Yes, I have always been one of the biggest children. Everybody was saying that I had a problem with speed. It seemed that everything I was doing was slow, because I was so big. Then, they did some tests and it proved, that I was one of the most rapid ones. Everyone apologized. To the Championship again: Is there a chance of winning? Sure, and that would make the dream of the coach and each of the players come true, because it is the challange numer one. We want to win as many titles as possible. Who would you give the Golden Ball to this year? It is very complicated. Xavi, Sneijder, there are several names and they are all very good players and all were playing an important role in the World Cup. I would love to take it to Germany though ...- Marcelo

Ronaldo hails Mourinho's spirit Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up about his relationship with new boss Jose Mourinho - a man who he has not always liked. During Manchester United's title triumph over Chelsea back in 2007, there were more than a few unfavourable remarks and reviews made by the "Special One" about his Portuguese compatriot. Some of the more standout opinions Chelsea's Mourinho had about his then rival club's star player included "immature", "disrespectful" and "ill-educated". But football can be a funny old game and both men now find themselves having to work together for a common goal - bringing the La Liga title back to Real Madrid. In their brief time working together so far, they have certainly made an impression this season. Overcoming a slow start, Ronaldo has fired Real to the top of the La Liga standings with an incredible 10 goals in his last four league games. After only a short time together, Mourinho is already considered as good as United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in Ronaldo's eyes. "Mourinho is a good coach with a very clear philosophy. Now you can say, already, he is the father of Real Madrid," Ronaldo was quoted in the Daily Mirror as saying. "He and Sir Alex are so very different but at the same time very similar. "They share the experience, the winning spirit of victory. Of course, one of them is much older and they have lived through two very different stories. "But I loved the time I spent working with Sir Alex and have great memories. We built a friendship and now I feel the same feeling with Mourinho. For me they are the two best coaches in the world. "This year you can see that several things have changed: discipline, aggressiveness, style of play and the willingness to work hard and together towards the same goal. This season is very different from the past. Madrid this year is not last year. We are totally different. " Mourinho, Ronaldo and the rest of the star studded Madrid team play at the San Siro on Wednesday night where they will put their perfect Champions League Group G record on the line against AC Milan.- Cristiano Ronaldo

Real response satisfies Mourinho Real Madrid chief Jose Mourinho admitted he was only concerned about the three points in their 3-1 triumph against Hercules. The plucky promoted outfit, who had already claimed shock scalps against Barcelona and Sevilla this campaign along with holding Villarreal to a draw, opened their account in the third minute thanks to a David Trezeguet finish. But Mourinho's troops regained their composure and Argentinian winger Angel Di Maria drew them level on 52 minutes before Portuguese dazzler Cristiano Ronaldo took centrestage, plundering twice in the last eight minutes to seal the victory for Madrid and more importantly, kept them a point ahead of arch rivals Barcelona, who whipped Sevilla 5-0. While expressing his displeasure at his side's defensive sloppiness, the former Chelsea gaffer was satisfied with their response after going a goal down. Speaking to realmadrid.com after the encounter, Mourinho elaborated: "The first half was very complicated because our opponent was aggressive." "I didn't like Hercules' goal because I talked to my players about efforts such as the one it came from." "We were practically alone playing football during the second half. We increased our defensive efforts." "The most important thing is we took three points that keep us at the top of the table for another week." Mourinho lavished praise on his counterparts but added that his side's gung-ho approach after their early setback paid dividends. He said: "Hercules are having a good run in the championship and they have players who are very good at playing this sort of game." "Their fans were very supportive of them, adding intensity to their game, which relied on fast ventures in attack." "We took risks and everything tastes better when you risk and also win. We had to win this game." The self styled "Special One" also reserved special mention for French striker Karim Benzema and rampaging full back Marcelo." "Benzema didn't score, but he created three goals: the first, the third and a possible fourth Cristiano could have netted," he added. "He was an extra help in attack and became a new problem for Hercules to solve. He completely changed the game's dynamics." "He may not have scored, but his influence on our game was enormous. " "This performance will be good for his morale. I am very happy for him." "Marcelo has been playing fantastically well since the start of the season." "He has more time to recover because he hasn't been called-up by Brazil. This is better for us but worse for Brazil, who miss out on having a full back of his quality." "This may help him play the whole season at this level."- Jose Mourinho
Mourinho can't see Fergie walking Jose Mourinho maintained that “only a special manager” can succeed Sir Alex Ferguson when the supremo finally steps down. The decorated Manchester United manager will turn 69 in December and rumours as to whom his successor will be when he finally quits have been swirling around for years. Despite the likes of Barcelona incumbent Pep Guardiola and Everton boss David Moyes mooted as potential candidates in several quarters, Real chief Mourinho is adamant that Ferguson will not turn his back on the Red Devils anytime soon. According to reports in The Mirror, Mourinho said: "Football without Alex Ferguson? I'm not sure that will happen any day soon," "The man lives and breathes football and Manchester United is his club." "His hunger and desire to win the biggest trophies remains so I cannot see the day he considers walking away from football approaching." "Like Real Madrid, the Manchester United job is special and only a special manager is good enough to take the job on if and when it does become available." "Of course, jobs like that don't become available every day so the interest will be vast." "Like Madrid, it's a job everyone will want." Sir Alex's prodigy Wayne Rooney recently garnered all the headlines when he dropped a bombshell by stating his desire to leave the club before performing a remarkable u-turn and signing a new five year deal after talks with his mentor. Nevertheless, despite the Madrid giants being linked with United sensation Rooney in the immediate aftermath of his announcement to leave the club, Mourinho insisted that he never envisaged the forward jumping ship. He opined:"Could I ever see him leaving? Never." "He is Manchester United through and through and he is working with one of the best coaches in football." "He's a great player but he belongs to United. I wasn't surprised to see him stay, I expected it." "There was no way Alex Ferguson would have considered selling him, not to anyone." "If you take the decision to leave a club like United, there are not many options open to you. Few clubs come any bigger." Focusing on his current task at hand, the former Chelsea and Inter Milan coach reiterated his desire to continue his winning mentality with his new Spanish employers. "Madrid is a special club and came to me at special time in my career," he commented. "After winning my second Champions League and after my success at Chelsea and Inter, the Real job and the challenge to be successful was very appealing." "I came to a team that had had no success for two years and faced the challenge of a very special Barcelona team and some of the great clubs in Europe in the Champions League. "Despite everything and all the success I have enjoyed, my desire to continue winning remains." "I love a challenge and this is a huge challenge for me." "Madrid didn't win the Champions league for 10 years, the Spanish Cup for 19 years and haven't won the Championship for three." "So there is a great deal of work to be done. I love the pressure and that is immediate at a club like this because failure doesn't sit comfortably with anyone." Despite achieving glory in every club he has trained, the Portuguese master countered that his hunger and enthusiasm for coaching has not waned one bit and is keen to stay in management for at least another 15 years. "I still have at least 10 or 15 years left in football management," he said. "Naturally a day will come when my circumstances change and I will want to lead a quieter life." "But it is not something I will be giving any consideration too for a long time to come." The Real Madrid boss will next take his side to San Siro to face off against Serie A giants AC Milan in their UEFA Champions League mid-week clash.- Jose Mourinho
Will Mourinho leave Real Madrid? There are question marks over Jose Mourinho's commitment to the Real Madrid cause after recent remarks he made. The trophy-laden manager has a history of moving on from a club after accumulating his fill of silverware, and admitted to Real's website that the La Liga giants were no different for him. Speaking to his club's official website, he said: "Staying on with a great club for such a long time is hard in the culture in which we live." He contrasted his experiences in Spain with his time as Chelsea boss, saying: "It is much easier in England. There you find people who stay on for years having not won a thing. "It is hard here because the need to win is always present. If I stay for four years it means I have done things right and that we are all happy, and I would be thrilled to continue." Mourinho left Inter Milan after leading the Serie A side to a glorious treble that included winning the Champions League, and has been linked with the Manchester United top job after Sir Alex Ferguson retires.- Alvaro Arbeloa

Ronaldo: I am phenomenal Cristiano Ronaldo has cockily claimed to be "simply phenomenal" after netting twice against Hercules. His double against La Liga's giant killers during Real Madrid's 3-1 victory on Saturday took his goal tally to an amazing ten in four league encounters. Ronaldo, who has now notched 13 strikes in all competitions, boasted in comments to the Sun: "I am in phenomenal shape and on a great run of form. "I come away happy with everything, for scoring and for winning." However, Barcelona rival Lionel Messi, who oversaw his own side's 5-0 destruction to Sevilla at the weekend, countered back after strike partner David Villa was subjected to taunts from Madrid master Jose Mourinho over his recent month-long goal drought. Villa shattered his barren streak by helping himself to a double against the Andalusians. Messi snapped back: "You shouldn't attach any importance to what Mourinho says." Champions Barcelona trail the capital outfit by a solitary point.- Jose Mourinho

Q: How do you see the team this season? A: It’s a new year, with a new project, a new coach and new players, and we’re growing bit by bit. I believe that we still have a lot of things to improve before the team can reach a higher competitive level, but the results have been good. And that’s good because it brings tranquility, but we’re aware that there’s still room to improve. Q: The squad of Madrid this year is very young. After the game against Ajax, Mourinho said that Real Madrid was like a team of children, with Xabi Alonso as the papá. Do you feel that way? A: (Laughs) Well, you know, those are phrases… I don’t consider myself the father. I have a bit more experience, of games, because the majority of the team is quite young. But I don’t consider myself a veteran yet. Q: How was it playing a Liga game in Anoeta against Real Sociedad wearing the shirt of Madrid? A: It was good. We know that Madrid isn’t the most beloved team there, but I received a nice reception. Whenever I’m in Donostia, and even when I played for other clubs, I noticed this nearness, this affection, this respect. That’s important for me, because in the future, I’ll return there. Q: World Cup, Eurocopa, Champions League, European Supercup… if this year you win the Liga, you would have accomplished what every footballer dreams of, no? A: The truth is I can’t complain, but the Liga is resisting me [must be the only thing EVER to be able to resist Xabi]. With Real Sociedad, Liverpool and Madrid, I’ve been second. I hope to finish first this year and to be able to one day repeat winning one of those other competitions. Q: If you could improve one of your skills on the field, which would it be? A: Perhaps to be a bit faster. Although I’ve never been known for my speed, since it’s not essential for my position, I believe that a spark, a bit more velocity would be good for me. Q: How is Cristiano Ronaldo as a teammate? A: He’s super ambitious, he always wants to improve, he’s very professional. This is the type of player that you want by your side, one that makes you and the team better. He’s very normal, very simple… and is always thinking about football. Q: How has Sergio Canales adapted to the team? Do you believe the expectations of him place too much pressure on him? A: We know that if you don’t control the environment around you well, at times you can lose sight of things. But I believe that Sergio has a good head on his shoulders and his adaptation has been good. Being Spanish makes things much simpler, because you already know the language, you know what you’re going to find… and that makes things easier. Q: Are there any players that have problems with the language? A: Yes, especially Sami Khedira and Özil… they speak English and a lot of us can speak with them, but they still have some trouble with castellano. Q: Is Mourinho as tough a coach as he appears to be? A: I don’t know how he appears, but he’s very demanding. He’s hardworking, he likes to be in charge of everything and he’s very detail-oriented. Q: And have you found any defects? A: He’s the boss (laughs). Q: I understand: no criticizing the boss. Two reasons why Madrid will win the Liga this year? A: For hopes and for work. Q: Who would you give the Golden Ball to? A: To Xavi. I like to look at careers, and that of Xavi has been spectacular in the last few years and he imposes his style wherever he plays. I love playing with him. Q: That’s your hope, but do you think they’ll give it to him? A: I don’t know, I hope so. Of course, he’d be a very deserved winner for me. Q: Between the games of the Liga, the Copa del Rey, the CL and the national team, you have a full calendar. Do you believe there should be less games? A: Yes, the Copa should be one game. That’s fundamental to free up some time because we’ve had little vacation since the World Cup ended. And then you start the season and it’s intense. We’ve only played a few games, but it already seems that the season has gone on for an eternity (laughs). So I don’t know how it’ll be at the end of the season. Q: On the national team, which players are you most friendly with? A: Do you know what happens? We’ve been together for so long that it’s difficult to answer… In addition, the World Cup was one and a half months long, so you lived through a lot with everyone. But logically, I have a greater friendship with those that I know best: Arbeloa, Albiol, Iker, Reina, Torres… and also those that I’ve shared clubs with, because I’ve spent more time with them. But in general, I get along very well with everyone, and the atmosphere is great. Q: How’s the sternum? What a kick you received from De Jong in the final of the World Cup… it hurt, no? A: It took some time to recover. I was feeling badly for three or four days. It didn’t leave much of a mark, because it was in the front, so nothing was broken, but my spine, my hips cracked. It was without a doubt the most serious blow that I’ve received in my life. Q: But you got up quickly. A: (Laughs) Because it was the final, I didn’t want to miss the game. Q: Do you believe that it was done intentionally? A: No! I think he didn’t see me. Obviously, the foot shouldn’t have gone there, but I don’t believe he saw me because if not, well then he should be jailed for that! Q: If you weren’t a footballer, what would you have become? A: I’ve always liked tennis a lot, but I don’t think I could reach a high level. So, like my friends, I would have studied in the university, I would have done my Erasmus year and now I would be working. I had started studying business, and so I’m sure it would be something related to business. Q: What are your hobbies? A: Right now my hobbies have been put on hold because I have two kids and they take up 100% of my time. I spend all my free time with them. The beginning of the season has been very intense and so you have to take advantage of any free time. Q: What movie would you recommend? A: I have a lot. I like the classic ones: Shawshank Redemption, Casablanca, The Great Escape, JFK… There are a lot more, but I like these a lot. Q: What is the most expensive item of clothing you own? A: One of my suits. Q: Of the clothing you have, were most of them gifts from designers, or do you like to go out and buy them yourself? A: Fortunately, there are things that you receive. I’m not very into shopping, but sometimes I do like it. Q: How do you come to terms with the fame? Do the fans harass you? A: No, the truth is that I’m okay with it and I prefer it to be like that. I try not to let it keep me from having a normal life and I think I’ve achieved that. In other words, I hope not to have to stop doing anything for that. Three years ago, in Mexico, I met a Mayan Indian, a football fan, that had just had a child and who named it after the person he believed was the best player in the world: one Xabi Alonso (laughs). Q: Really? Why so much devotion? A: I thank him and I send him a “supersaludo” from here. The truth is such admiration surprises me. Q: How was the photo session? Did you feel comfortable? A: Well, it’s a different area from ours, but bit by bit you become accustomed to it, and if you do it with naturalness and try not to do anything strange, things turn out well. Wow, Xabi looks amazing in the tux, no? And he would be the sexiest professor out there! I just wished he had put on those glasses for a few shots, I’m sure he would have looked great in them too! Watch a making of from the session here! By the way, Xabi received on Monday the “Lan Onari” distinction, one of the highest that the Basque government hands out to recognize Basques that “are characterized by extraordinary dedication, consistency and spirit in the carrying out of professional activities.” Of Xabi, the lehendakari said, “his boots demonstrate the universality of sports here, in England, in Madrid or South Africa. He’s a model of sporting effort for young people.” Xabi will also be honored in his hometown of Tolosa in December. Picture here. Credit unamadridista- Xabi Alonso
