Jay-Z Signs 'Superstar' Willow Smith To Roc Nation Superstar mogul compares Will and Jada Pinkett's 9-year-old to a young Michael Jackson during call to 'On-Air With Ryan Seacrest.' By Daniela Capistrano Just two days after Willow Smith's kid-friendly club banger "Whip My Hair" leaked online, Jay-Z and his petite protégé called in to "On-Air With Ryan Seacrest" to confirm that he had signed her to his Roc Nation label. Describing Willow's debut as "a hit," Jay-Z said on Thursday morning (September 9) that he first heard the track before he knew it had been recorded by a 9-year-old. "I was like, 'Man, that record's a smash.' And then [Roc Nation partner] Jay Brown said, 'She's 9,' and I was like, 'Whoa!' And [then] he was like, 'She's Will and Jada's daughter,' and I was like, 'Whoa!' and it just went from there." Hov first met with Willow in Japan, where she was traveling with her family for big brother Jaden's film "The Karate Kid." Jay-Z was impressed with the youngster's natural confidence. "She walked in and the first thing she said was, 'I'm really nervous,' and I thought, 'That's maturity to explain exactly how she was feeling when she walked right into the room.' I knew right then she was a star," Jay said. "I believe in superstars. I believe in big records and superstars, and I think she has both." Despite admitting that media attention is often "very overwhelming," Willow credited her mother for her being able to feel confident with paparazzi. "My mom teaches me to say how I feel all the time," Willow explained. "My mom and me are very strong individuals and I just know that, because lots of people, they don't act like themselves, so they're not happy." Responding to Seacrest's question about the meaning of "Whip My Hair," Willow said that "it means just be an individual. Like, you can't be afraid to be yourself, you have to be yourself, and you can't let anyone tell you that that's wrong." Jay-Z agreed. "If you sat with [Willow] for half an hour, she's just a wealth of information and ideas. She has child innocence but she has a clear vision of what she wants and who she wants to be." Although Willow only started working on her music this year, Jay-Z — who drew comparisons to another young pop star he discovered, Rihanna — said he sees great things in the young artist's future. "I don't want to go so far, but I can imagine that's how Mike [Jackson] was as a young kid — he knew exactly what he wanted," Jay said, comparing Smith to the late King of Pop. To critics who question Willow's early start, Jay-Z pointed out that music stars often have early beginnings. "I believe that you have to start somewhere, and when you have that sort of talent and vision, there's no such thing as too young. Again, I heard the record without knowing who it was. ... We all danced to Michael Jackson records when he was 8. Stevie Wonder started at 8, it's just what it is, who she is." Willow's debut video will be shot in Los Angeles at the end of September. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1647430/2...909/jay_z.jhtml

Willow Smith, 'Whip My Hair' -- New Song Willow Smith, nine-year old daughter of mega-star Will Smith, and sister of Jaden Smith, star of this summer's smash hit 'The Karate Kid,' finally steps out on her own with 'Whip My Hair,' the first single from her forthcoming debut album. The song wastes no time getting up to warp speed, with big keyboard washes and a busy, propulsive beat occasionally being interrupted by a very cool effect that sounds like a futuristic dance robot cranking into life. Predominantly, though, the focus is on the nearly constant, insistent repetition of the song's call to action: "I whip my hair back and forth / I whip my hair back and forth / I whip my hair back and forth." They say children have a wisdom that we lose as we get older, and seeing as how she's a girl who has no doubt seen much of this world thanks to her jet-setting parents, perhaps everyone should heed Willow's universal message: "All my ladies if you feel it go on and do it / Do it with your hair / Don't matter if it's long, short / Do it do it with your hair / Whip your hair." Willow recently announced that she will be releasing her so-far untitled album on Jay-Z's new Roc Nation label. A release date has not been set, but that just leaves us all more time to grow our hair out and crank up 'Whip My Hair' over on AOL Radio's New Pop First station.

Joe Jackson Claims His Parenting Style Kept Michael Out Of Trouble Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) - Joe Jackson may have been left out of his famous son's will, but still he didn't think it has anything to do with how he raised him. Michael Jackson's father defends spanking his children when they were young. The late King of Pop claimed that he was physically and emotionally abused by his father, though he gave him credit for being part of his success. Joe was interviewed for the movie about Michael's life Katherine Jackson is producing. His part was shot by Jacksonsecretvault.com over the summer. In the clip, obtained by TMZ, he was asked what he thinks about Michael's past comments about Joe's parenting style. He answered, "I had to be like that because when raising him, in those days, so many gangs out there getting into trouble, going to jail. Most of them are dead now. He didn't have to worry about that." And for regrets, Joe adamantly denies that he has any, saying, "No! They tried to make a big issue when I spanked Michael or some of the kids, ya know? Just like they didn't spank their kids when they did wrong. The media twists everything." Read more: http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/70...e#ixzz0ym49DRoF

Appeals court sets hearing in Michael Jackson estate case By Anthony Mccartney, AP Entertainment Writer LOS ANGELES — An appeals court has scheduled a hearing for lawyers for the father of Michael Jackson to argue that he deserves a role in decisions involving his son's multimillion dollar estate. The Second District Court of Appeal said Thursday the appeal by Joe Jackson would be heard on Oct. 6. In November, the elder Jackson challenged a ruling by a state judge that the estate would be run by attorney John Branca and music executive and family friend John McClain. The men had been designated in the singer's 2002 will to administer his estate. The will omitted Joe Jackson — in effect denying him any stipend or decision-making authority. "I think it's an important issue for all fathers around the country and around the world that when their child dies they should have a say-so in their child's estate," said attorney Brian Oxman, who represents Joe Jackson. Attorney Howard Weitzman, who represents the estate, said the administrators were meeting all obligations to the beneficiaries named in the will. "As I've said before, Mr. Jackson's appeal is not well taken," Weitzman said. The singer's estate has earned tens of millions of dollars since the singer's death at age 50 in June 2009. Joe Jackson is also pursuing a federal wrongful death lawsuit against Conrad Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the singer's death. Authorities contend Murray, a cardiologist, gave the singer a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol. The costs of the wrongful death lawsuit should be paid by Michael Jackson's estate, Oxman said. The estate is not a party to the lawsuit. http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2010-0...tate-case_N.htm

Jackson's hometown plans to celebrate his birthday (AP) – 6 hours ago GARY, Ind. — Michael Jackson's hometown in Indiana is planning another tribute to the "King of Pop" just two months after marking the one-year anniversary of his death. A news release issued by the city says a tribute will be held outside Jackson's boyhood home in Gary on Saturday, a day before what would have been his 52nd birthday. Gary Mayor Rudy Clay says the city is honoring Jackson's memory as a great and giving person and as the world's greatest entertainer. The Jackson Family moved out of the city after the Jackson 5 struck it big in 1969. Organizers say the event Saturday will include local entertainers and a Michael Jackson impersonator. Jackson died last year in Los Angeles of an overdose of sedatives. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/articl...Xx3u2wD9HQFQPG0

Judge sets Jan. 4 preliminary hearing for doctor charged in MJ death By Anthony McCartney (CP) – 15 minutes ago LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A preliminary hearing where prosecutors will lay out some of the evidence against a doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death will begin Jan. 4 in Los Angeles, a judge said Monday. The hearing had been expected to begin later this year but was pushed back due to issues involving witness availability and the ongoing investigation, Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said. After the hearing, which is expected to last at least two weeks, Pastor will determine if there is enough evidence to order cardiologist Conrad Murray to stand trial. Several members of Jackson's family, including his mother Katherine and father Joseph, attended Monday's hearing. They waved to fans who were allowed into the courtroom wearing T-shirts seeking justice for the pop singer. Murray, 57, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Jackson in June 2009 at the age of 50. Authorities have accused Murray of administering a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol to Jackson in the bedroom of the singer's rented mansion. Murray's attorneys have said the doctor did not give Jackson anything that should have killed him. Murray's defence team wants permission to retest three chemical samples currently held by the coroner's office. Attorney J. Michael Flanagan said the samples were obtained from two syringes and an IV, but he did not elaborate. Prosecutor David Walgren sought more information about the tests and whether the samples might be destroyed. Pastor urged both sides to work out a deal on the request. Murray is due back in court on Oct. 26 for another status hearing.

Janet Jackson: I spotted Lady Gaga first and now I want to duet with her Lady Gaga must really have hit the big time – Janet Jackson has revealed she was the first to see the star in Gaga and wants to do a duet with her, à la Beyoncé. The Poker Face singer was ‘definitely’ a collaboration target, Janet Jackson told Metro’s Ann Lee in an exclusive chat. ‘What I love about Gaga is her story, where she came from’ revealed the 44-year-old, who is now saying ‘I told you so’ by claiming she was the first to tip her for big things. ‘Before she made it, before anyone knew who she was, I knew who she was and, to see her finally make it, I was so happy,’ she insisted, before adding: ‘If we were to work together that would be cool.’ For now, the little sister of the late King of Pop is channelling her personal grief into her role as a grieving mother in new film Why Did I Get Married Too? The singer admitted her inspiration ‘stems from recent tragedies for my family’. The film is due for release on September 3.

V Exclusive: New MJ Album To Include Tracks By will.i.am, Teddy Riley & Rodney Jerkins With the recent news that an all-new Michael Jackson album featuring 10 unreleased tracks is set to drop this November, more insight into the anticipated project has surfaced. According to the late King of Pop’s Estate administrator John Branca, the upcoming collection is set to feature an all-star roster of producers. “We are finishing up the album as we speak,” Branca tells VIBE. “There will be some will.i.am, Teddy Riley and Rodney Jerkins songs. We don’t want to put 10 unrelated songs together. We want to put together an album that fits well.” While Branca, Jackson’s longtime lawyer, would not give any specifics on the tracks, he says that the legendary performer was very hands-on during the recording process. “Some of the songs Mike were working on by himself. Michael always over-recorded. A song like 'Billie Jean' was supposed to be on the Off The Wall album, but for whatever reason his team didn’t think it was strong enough. So there’s plenty of good new material for this upcoming project.” In the June/July issue, VIBE gave exclusive details into some of the unreleased Michael Jackson tracks tentatively slated for the November release. The buzz-heavy set is reportedly the first in series of 10-projects tied to a seven-year deal the Jackson estate inked with Sony Music in March 2010. The $250 million pact includes a Michael Jackson video game, due out at the end of 2010; various reissues of Jackson’s landmark albums; a revamped greatest hits sets and a Cirque du Soleil show based on the Gloved One’s music http://www.vibe.com/posts/vibe-exclusive-n...-rodney-jerkins
