OMG. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Sad. Simply sad. I agree she is a little thick, but then again supermodels are perfect. Beyonce is an average woman with talent and a beutiful face. I don't understand...why are supermodels perfect, even if we're simply talking about looks? Most guys I know prefer her body to, like, Alessandra's - not because she's 'average' and they prefer that to 'perfection', but because they don't think "rail thin" = "perfect."

Seemingly contradictory pair of sentences here, no? I know that people's terminology always vary and there's no *right* way of defining things apart from social agreement on what words mean but... It seems to me that "opinion" is used too ambigously in many many cases (espeically instances like this). For instance, in the sentence (a) It is my opinion that 2+2=4 opinion means something completely different than in something like (b) In my opinion, Miles Davis' "Sketches of Spain" album is better than Beyonce's "B' Day" album. In (a), we're making a propositional claim about something with a definite truth value. (b) takes the same *form* but what really differentiates it from something like (b*) I prefer/enjoy listening to Sketches of Spain more than B' Day ? One response is that what makes something 'better' aesthetically is some transcendent property that is not related to/not dependent upon subjective enjoyment. I've got tons of arguments against that but.... it doesn't seem you're using it in that sense anyway, because you say it's okay to deny(and, I suppose you'd also admit, affirm) her beauty or talent because it's just a matter of 'opinion' (in the 'preference' sense). So why is the judgment that her picture isn't the *best* simply non-preferential while judgments of her beauty or talent are preferential/opinion? Where could one ever find any sort of impartial, non-preferential evidence to support the assertion that her photo isn't the best? This seems to be the problem that I have with some of nina's arguments. They revolve around admissions that while many people find Beyonce pretty enough to be on the cover (and I suspect most American males and SE readers fall into this group) , because nina and some of her friends disagree, Beyonce doesn't deserve it. You can't move from an is to an ought like that. No matter which characteristics of Beyonce we list (larger ass than models, larger thighs, dark skin, height, whatever), it's hard to say that because this is how she is physically, people ought to find her attractive or unattractive. The other arguments all seem to be built on the premise that SI has an obligation to increase the fame and fortune of models. Why should SI show a preference to one group of multi-millionaires over another? Because they traditionally have? That doesn't seem very convincing to me. And if I seem harsh, I apologise... ....no disrepect or dislike aimed at anyone here. You all seem pretty cool to me! I just like saying things as clearly as I can and sometimes that comes off as over-aggresive. Sorry if it does!

First of all Adriana has small boobs and a wide waist so she's not exactly curvy. Second of all Marissa Miller's body is WAAAAAAAAAAY sexier than Beyonce's. Not just to me but to many boys/men I know. As for Beyonce I don't think she's fat but I called her a cow because of her huge thighs and ass that she's totally proud of and the only reason she's popular also because some people have horrid tastes in music and can't realize that the only thing she can do is howl rather than sing. Like J.lo to me is sexy curvy. Beyonce is just too much. She has those huge thick thighs that she throws around all over the place like she's a freakin goddess and she's always talking about how womanly her body is and how sexy her body is blah blah blah. When in fact the average young girl (17-25) is probably slimmer like Bar than she is like Beyonce. But like Beyonce's shots were so horrible (I know you said this aswell) and like she didn't even have to work for it, they just garaunteed her the cover. They should've let Petra back in, she was the best SI model. Better than Ana and Marissa imo. Even though marissa' body was better. Petra was just born for SI. That's her thing. As was Marissa. Beyonce's cover sucked, it was even worse than last year's cover. I like Marissa's body too. Liking one doesn't preclude liking the other. It just seems you're so concerned about Beyonce's shape - that she's *too* curvy or something. You might not like that, and some of your male friends might not like it, but....plenty of us DO. i just don't understand why it's wrong for someone to be proud of their body if they're perfectly healthy and many people find it desirable. She has thick thighs. Many of us like her thick thighs. That's just the facts. You don't. Guess that just makes you outside of the general audience SI was aiming for.

Worked? If you're a model, you're a model because you happened to be born pretty. You won a piece of the genetic lottery. Sure, doing shows and working out might not be simple but it's not neurosurgery or sewing up shoes for a cent a week in China. Beyonce worked at her job - she makes the bland, unimaginative pop music that people swallow up constantly and has done it for years. She happens to have been born with a pretty face and thighs that get men's hearts racing. Ana Baros happens to have been born with a pretty face and a body many guys like. In the end, that's why people get picked for this issue.

huh right... in your playboy world maybe ? :laugh: thanks, taben. but seriously, i understand that a Vogue or W cover (for example) is incredibly significant in a model's career. i'm not a complete idiot. give me some credit here. however, if a model lands the cover of the SI Swimsuit issue, it automatically guarantees a tremendous amount of press and attention throughout all of the men's magazines, talk-shows, etc. these are the things that a model with a strong personality can use to turn themselves into a successful brand and become an internationally famous supermodel. (see Tyra, Heidi, Rebecca, etc). sure, there are always models like Elsa Benitez who, while gorgeous, lack that *oomph* that would turn them into a household name. but nonetheless, if a model with a whole lotta charisma and success within the high fashion world, like say Karolina Kurkova or Daria Werbowy, landed the SI cover --- it would most certainly bring their fame, and thus fortune and thus SUPERMODEL STATUS to a new, higher level. how many Vogue covers does Daria have? zillions. How famous is she? exactly. if she were on this magazines cover, it would mean the world of difference to her career longevity and financial status. ergo, it would ultimately be the one cover that really truly matters, because it would launch her to a new level. who was Heidi Klum before she was a SI cover model? Why should the SE's readers (and I use that term lightly) care about the degree of financial/fame/fortune success that models happen to have? Why should SI in general care? The readers want to see pretty women in swimsuits. The mag wants to sell issues. Many men find Beyonce pretty and will buy the mag because of it. These are people who have their job because they were born pretty. I'm sure there's hard work in it too, but these aren't coal miners or sweatshop workers in Malaysia. So they'd get richer if they landed the cover ------- so what??? I find, say, Ana BB to be prettier than Beyonce (at least facially, not body-wise, but I digress) but....so what? SI wasn't ever helping out destitute women by putting them on the cover. They picked women that look pretty and photographed well. That's it. That's why the issue is around.

I'm tired of this idea that mutli-millionaires are being 'robbed' by not getting on the cover of a mag. I don't understand. I just don't get it. SI picked a woman that many people find attractive to be on the cover. They're giving the subscribers what they want. They put attractive women in the issue. That's why they pick models. It's never going to be anything but superficial. True, they generally pick women with a 'classier' look than, say, the breast-implanted butterfaces from Stuff or all those mags. That's because that's what people who get the issue want. Why do they have an obligation to give it to a multi-millionaire model over a multi-millionaire singer? Because they traditionally put models in there? Big deal. This was never about 'hard work.' It's about attractive women in skimpy clothes. If it were about who worked the hardest they would have had an obligation to give it to Mother Theresa in the 90s.

A lot of people are forgetting that a lot of these "no make-up pics" are of celebrities on their WORST possible days caught in horrible poses like yawning or with a look of disgust on their face and with messed up hair and clothes. A lot of the celebs that were posted I've seen better pics w/o makeup like Halle Berry. I was going to say the same thing. A lot of these are pictures taken in terrible lighting with funny faces. I personally think most women look better without makeup. A bad picture is just a bad picture.

Why should the average guy care about the status of the supermodel? Because that's who the SE is aimed at, the average guy with an interest in sports. Ask guys on my football team if they're more attracted to a clothes hanger like Gemma Ward or to Beyonce. I'll be the first to say Beyonce's music is bland, manufactured drivel. So what? She's only famous because people like her face and her big ass. So what? She's in the SE because of her face and her big ass. Why? Because people like it. The people at SI aren't going to stack the issue with the emaciated models that seem to get all the love on this site because they won't sell anything like that. They feature women that guys are attracted to. It's never been about 'deserving.'

Jessica Alba might not be as curvy as some of the other fine women here, but she's not a stick either. How far does your range go? I guess I, as a straight male, just don't understand how someone can have something against T & A and just like an erector set body. To each his own though, I suppose.
