Hopefully Heidi will feel better and be able to make it to her Halloween party: :shock: :notsure: Heidi Klum ‘no-show’ at Digital Fashion Week 2013 preview German-American model and television host Heidi Klum was hospitalised and couldn’t make the preview event of Digital Fashion Week 2013 Fans and invited guests waited and waited on Sunday afternoon for Heidi Klum's much anticipated appearance in Singapore, through an event co-organised with Digital Fashion Week. Alas, it was not meant to be — the model-television host was stuck in her sickbed for the weekend. At the October 27, 2013, invite-only preview for Digital Fashion Week 2013, Klum was said to have “wanted to be here” but was advised against it by her doctors, said one of the event hosts. The cause of her illness was not disclosed. The news was confirmed by Digital Fashion Week, who said that Klum is currently hospitalised in Singapore. The German-American supermodel was originally scheduled to return to Germany on October 30, after a five-day visit to Singapore. Food blogger Charleen Neo, 24, was among the invited guests and was one of many disappointed fans who had expected to see Klum in-person. “I have seen Heidi Klum host Germany’s Next Top Model on television,” said Neo. “The preview is really not the same without her. From Cleopatra to Betty Boop, the supermodel has worked her connections in the biz (make-up artists, designers) to create the most stunning ensembles for her annual Halloween party. Although she’s staying mum on what she’ll be dressing up as this year, she did talk to Parade.com about tips for how you can create the most amazing and enviable Halloween costume. She also dished on this season of Project Runway and her new holiday collection for Babies“R”Us. You always have the most incredible Halloween costumes. How do you come up with new ideas every year? “I start thinking of ideas months before Halloween, and I have an amazing team who makes the impossible possible. I don’t really have a system for picking my costume each year, they kind of just come to me. It’s definitely not a last-minute decision. It takes months of preparation.” Have you ever had costume-envy? “No. I want people to strive to have a better costume than me. I want my guests to really wow me! It’s so much fun when I’m looking at someone in their costume and it takes me a few minutes to figure out it is one of my closest friends!” What would be your ‘made-in-5-minutes-or-less’ costume suggestion for those of us who wait to the last minute every Halloween? “I take Halloween very seriously, so I’m not a fan of a thrown together costume, but in an absolute pinch, look around at what items you have around your house. You’d be surprised what you can come up with. Or cut two holes in a bed sheet and be a ghost. But seriously, I’d rather stay home than go out in an uninspired costume.” Do you have any fall family traditions? Maybe something you did growing up in Germany? “We make pomanders. You take oranges and poke small holes into them with a pin and then put cloves into the holes (see photo to the left). It makes a room smell delicious, and it makes a really lovely centerpiece.” You have just showcased a new holiday collection, “Truly Scrumptious” for Babies”R”Us, as a part of Kids Fashion Week. Were you inspired by your own kids’ style? “Definitely! I have four kids ranging in age from 4-9 and they all have very different personalities, but all of them like color and patterns. When I design, I try to always incorporate color and whimsey. Kids clothing should be fun and comfy! I always try to add for special touches and extra sparkles!” What tips do you have for parents of budding fashionistas? “Let your kids have fun and let them experiment with fashion—even if they may look a bit ridiculous. If they want to wear a tutu out one day, let them! I really believe that style is a reflection of one’s personality and everyone should be able to wear whatever they feel comfortable in. There should be no rules with fashion, especially children’s fashion.” We are down to the wire on Project Runway with Fashion Week just around the corner. Are you happy with who is left in competition? Is there a clear winner for you? “Season 12 of Project Runway was such an amazing season. I don’t think we have ever seen so many talented designers. It was honestly very tricky to have a favorite this time around. It seems that every year, we find more and more talented people out there. The finale is October 17, so you’ll have to watch and see.” How has Tim Gunn in the judges seat affected the decision-making this season? “Our fans always ask for ‘more Tim Gunn,’ so we listened to them! Not only is Tim so nice and funny, but he also has a one of a kind perspective that is invaluable for Zac, Nina, and I at judging. Tim is with the designers in the workroom and can advise us on what is happening behind the scenes. Since he is merely watching the show from our chairs and not actual casting a vote, it keeps the integrity of the relationship that he and the designers share, which is one of the backbones of our show.” Are we going to see more of you as Ulee Danssen on Parks and Recreation? “I had such a fun time guest starring on Parks and Recreation, but it was a one-time thing! I was literally in awe on the set. My scene was with Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, and Adam Scott and they just had me laughing and laughing on set. I was a bit nervous, but they were very welcoming and helpful, and my character had a statue of herself made of actual goat cheese, so that was pretty cool! The America’s Got Talent judge and Project Runway host, 43, is a single mom to Leni (pronounced Lainie), 9, Henry, 8, Johan, 6, and Lou, who turns four tomorrow. Heidi was more than happy to talk about her parenting procedures during her Truly Scrumptious Babies R Us fashion show at Kids Fashion Week in NYC. During the show, a music-box rendition of Aerosmith’s Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing and Icona Pop’s I Don’t Care played as kids decked out in adorable clothes, like a rainbow-colored faux fur jacket, gold lame coat and elf pajamas, strutted their stuff. Many of the kids wore balloon hats and face paint. So cute! As for Heidi’s own kids? “They don’t watch a lot of television,” the supermodel admits. “I’m old-fashioned, and I feel like technology ran away with everything. I don’t believe in setting your kids in front of something, always. I think that they have to do things with their hands and they have to get dirty, and they should be outside, play with the dogs, or think of something to do.” Heidi believes that getting out of the house opens horizons. “I don’t think it’s good to always think for them,” she says. “When I grew up, I was outside, and you think about what you’re going to do, and sometimes it takes a while to figure out what you want to do.” What do Heidi’s kids want to be when they grow up? “I haven’t pushed them [into the modeling world],” she says. “I’m quite happy that they haven’t asked me to do this. Not that I have anything against it, but because I’m in it, I know a lot about it. They have different interests.” She adds, “My daughter Leni is here today. She’s excited to be at a fashion show. I flew with her here this morning from L.A. She wants to do something with animals. She loves animals, and she wants to help animals.” With four growing children, two television shows and many successful business ventures, how does she do it all? “If you love what you do, you’ll always find the time,” she says. “And then also, you don’t need a lot of time. I don’t sit at home and wrack my brain, like ‘oh my gosh, I have to come up with something.’ They can’t keep up with the ideas that I have! Sometimes I’ll see someone walking down the street, and I have to take a photo of a certain something that they have going on, that is a new brand or something that I see in Europe someone wear.” She adds, “I saw this one girl wearing a hoodie with the shoulders cut out. It was so cool! Maybe years down the line, I’ll incorporate it.”

One of those moms I have the pleasure of working with on set at Project Runway is Heidi Klum. Between all of the tapings, fittings and interviews, I was able to sit down with Heidi and chat about her approach to parenting and how she manages to make a family of four kids work for her. Heidi, you are a superwoman/supermom to me. How do you do it all? I think doing it all is a myth. I don’t go to a traditional office every day, but I do try to be at home by 5 p.m. so I can have dinner with my family and spend the rest of the day together. When I walk into my house, I leave my purse and my workday at the front door. When I’m at work, I make that time count. When I am home, I make that time count. And then, there are some days when everything doesn’t get crossed off the list. The weekends are off and they just belong to my family. How do you share the love between all of your kids? My kids are best friends and love to do things together. We love to play together, do crafts together and cook together. Now that they are a little older, we have started watching a few shows together, too. They’re really into America’s Got Talent and the boys love American Ninja Warrior. We all pile onto the couch together and watch. It’s become a new thing for us. Must-have items for you and your kids? Leni loves everything gymnastic-related. She trains on her balance beam almost every day and loves to Hula-Hoop. The boys love their bikes, basketballs, footballs and now their new pet mouse, Chuby. Lou loves it when Leni teaches her to Hula-Hoop. Her new obsessions are her first pair of white rhinestone bedazzled heels. You travel a lot. Any tips about packing? How about packing for the whole family? We travel with a LOT of suitcases. We have a list of essential items that have to go on every trip, so each thing gets checked off before it goes into the suitcase. That way, we at least remember the basics. With four kids, I would rather have too much than too little! How do you keep in shape? Taking into consideration you are human, which I don't think you are … I like to make my workouts fun. I try to always move with my kids when we’re at the park or the beach instead of sitting on the sidelines. We’re fortunate to live near a beautiful canyon in Los Angeles so, oftentimes, we’ll put a leash on the dogs and take them for a neighborhood hike, or we go on a bike ride in Santa Monica. Sports are super important. I always want to be fit and active with my children. Are your kids learning German as well? I’m very close with my parents, and they have been a strong influence in my children’s lives. They speak only German to Oma and Opa. We have German books that they read, too. I grew up in Germany, and it’s important to me that they learn the language and culture. I'm obsessed with your Instagram. Any tips for taking awesome selfies? For selfies, it’s important to always find good lighting. Good lighting can make or break a photo. The essential piece for your kids is? Their sleep animals that they have had since they were babies. And for you? For me, it’s all about having great basics: the pair of jeans you never want to take off, a great blazer and a really high pair of heels. I’m also an avid sunglasses collector. I’m embarrassed to tell you how many pairs I have, so let’s just say it’s a lot. Can you conquer the world with flat shoes? That is a complicated question! Could we? Maybe. But would we want to? There’s something about putting on a great pair of heels that just helps me stand a little taller and walk into a room with a bit more confidence.

I never do something because I have an ‘image.’ It always happens more organically.” With four kids, the Truly Scrumptious line was a no-brainer, she says. “I’ve shopped all over the planet trying to find the coolest clothes and toys for my kids. I love fashion, and it’s even more fun designing for [children] instead of for grownups.” And her fragrance lines? “Well, that comes from my childhood. I grew up around perfume.” Klum’s dad was the marketing director at 4711, the biggest perfume house in Germany, and as a teen she worked there “learning how packaging was done, finding fragrances and picking bottles. It’s funny how I get to do all these things myself now.” She recalls that when she first started modeling, “I was fascinated by the whole process of it. Most models would just go in, put on the clothes and just be done, but I would always ask a lot of questions. I was very interested in the craft and design aspects of all the things that I saw.” As her supermodel career exploded, Klum says she never had a manager saying, “ ‘Who should we go after?’ or ‘Let’s make a gigantic game plan.’ I didn’t have major long-term goals, I had little short-term ones. Like, ‘I’d like to do this magazine or work with this photographer.’ I didn’t say, ‘I want to design clothing lines and have television shows.’ [she’s host and executive producer on the long-running Project Runway series, now on Lifetime, and a judge this year on NBC’s America’s Got Talent]. I couldn’t predict it, it just happened.” What does Klum love most? “Anything creative, whether it’s designing clothes, looking at samples, writing commercials or looking at fashions in Paris. That’s always been my passion.” She’s especially excited about doing her first fashion show this year. “My oldest daughter will get to see it, and she’s very excited.” And, Klum adds, her children are big fans of America’s Got Talent: “For them it’s been super exciting to see me on TV.” Klum’s least favorite responsibility? “I’m not the biggest fan of paperwork,” she says, sounding more like a regular person than a supermodel, TV personality or head of a global brand. “I know it has to be done, but it always feels like homework to me.”

"I love Project Runway," she tells them. "It's my fifth baby, so to speak." If that's the case, the real-life mother of four figuratively delivered her sixth child this summer: a new judging gig on NBC's America's Got Talent. But today, all of her focus is on Lifetime's Runway — especially since guest judge Sigourney Weaver bailed at the last minute. Good thing Klum and her team had booked hot designer Erin Fetherston along with Weaver. "Sigourney was really sick," Klum later explains. "She canceled [her performance in] Broadway's Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, too, so I was happy it wasn't just us." (The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco guest judges this week.) It was yet another make-it-work moment in the busy life of the supermodel, who turned 40 on June 1. "If anybody can do it, it's Heidi," says her Project Runway cohost Tim Gunn. "She's the closest thing to a superhero as a person can be." Gunn's increased role — he attends every runway show and has the power to save one designer — is just one of the alterations Klum and Co. have made this season. Judges can now take an up-close, touchy-feely look at the outfits, which has made wunderkind designer Zac Posen (who replaced Michael Kors as a full-time panelist last season) more at ease. "It's great for Zac, because he's so in his environment," Klum says. "Michael Kors is not only one of the best designers; he's also hilarious. It would be hard for anyone to take his seat." With typically refreshing bluntness, Klum admits, "I was not the biggest fan of last season's Teams Edition. I told the network, but they said, 'No, we want to do something different.'" For now, Runway seems back on track, and Klum doesn't see it coming to an end anytime soon. "If there were only five people watching, then we'd have to say, 'All right, this is it,'" she says. "But if it's still good and we have fans out there who want us to keep putting it on, we'll keep putting it on!" A few weeks later, Klum answers the door to her America's Got Talent dressing room at NYC's famed Radio City Music Hall in a robe — and without a stitch of makeup. And yes, she still looks gorgeous. How does she do it all? "I'm done with Runway [for] this season," she explains. "We had eight days of vacation, and now I shuttle myself back and forth every week. I'm here for two days, and the rest of the week I'm home [in Los Angeles ]. To be honest, it's not superhard." She seems to have an easy rapport with fellow judges Mel B. (aka Scary Spice), Howie Mandel and Howard Stern. "I'm happy we're all so different and wild and crazy," she says. "Howard is cute. He's always peeking over at his wife [beth]. She gives the thumbs-up or thumbs-down." Stern gives Klum a big thumbs-up. "Working with Heidi is like waking up in the morning and smelling roses," he gushes. "It's been nothing but pleasant — no gossip or bad news. I'm glad she dumped Seal, how's that?" Klum's split from her pop-star husband hasn't caused a snag in her career (she's now dating former bodyguard Martin Kristen). In fact, the only thing that has flummoxed her lately was having to wear the same outfit four days in a row for continuity during AGT's audition episodes in various cities earlier this year. "By the second or third day, I was like, 'I can't believe I'm wearing the same thing again!'" she says with a laugh. "I wear an outfit for two hours and I'm over it. It's just what I do." More people know what she does, now that she's on one of summer's highest-rated shows. "People notice me more on the street," she says. "We went to [Long Island water park] Splish Splash, and people were like, 'Oh, my God, it's Heidi from AGT!'" Any concerns about overexposure are given a firm "auf Wiedersehen!" "I'm not on TV constantly," she stresses. "I'm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. There are still other days of the week!"
