Heidi Klum
Heidi was interviewed by the pregnancy blog, What to Expect: http://www.whattoexpect.com/celebrities/he...-interview.aspx It’s no understatement to say that Heidi Klum has it all: looks (she’s a top model), a hot hubby (she’s been married to the singer, Seal, since 2005), four beautiful (and well-behaved!) children (Leni, 7, Henry, 5, Johan, 4, and Lou, 1) and several great jobs, including hosting the hit show Project Runway on Lifetime and designing clothes and shoes (she even has her own lines of maternity wear). Another accomplishment to add to the list: her brand-new fashion and beauty Web site, heidiklum.aol.com. And she did it all before her 38th birthday. Despite her packed schedule, Heidi found the time to talk to WTE. Here’s what she had to say on being a mom of four kids, a wife, and a woman. I know pregnancy must seem ages ago, but do you remember being nervous when you were expecting? I wasn’t very anxious. I thought, I’m just going to go with the flow, and my body will tell me what I have to do. How did you feel during pregnancy? Up to when I gave birth, I felt sexy, even though I was kind of big. I didn’t mind gaining weight because you have to build a foundation for a baby to be in there for all those months. You can’t be that thin to carry an almost nine-pounder in the front. I think you need the love handles and all that growth. But I really did feel sexy all the way up until the end. I gained 45 pounds, and that for me was a lot. And that was after eating very healthfully. Every once in a while I treated myself to something, but it wasn’t like every day all the time. And how did you feel after each birth? I never really felt awful because I knew I just made a child, but the first few weeks after the birth are very hard. You’re kind of like an imploded balloon! The skin hasn’t shrunk back yet. But it’s amazing that it does when you slowly start moving your body and walking around. How did you lose the baby weight? Breastfeeding! And getting active again, that’s the best thing. I had a very steep driveway so I’d go up and down it with the baby in the stroller. But you really have to listen to your body and not overdo it. When your kids woke up at night, how did you get them to fall asleep again? It was hard for me to leave them crying. I’m not very good at that. [Once they were older and could sleep on their stomachs,] I’d go pat them on their butts — gentle little taps. And I’d rub their backs up and down. Usually that would do the trick to get them to go back to sleep. Now that Lou understands more, I just say, “No, it’s still bedtime. You have to go to sleep. Put your head down,” and she usually listens to me. If she doesn’t, I stand there a little while longer. When Lou was younger, it was definitely about getting a good feeding in before she would go to bed. Babies wake up because they’re hungry. You have to make sure they eat a lot before they go to bed. For my older kids, I got this really cool clock, and it’s separated between day and night. When the picture of the bunny going to school with his little backpack on is lit up, it’s daytime. And when the picture of the bunny in bed is lit up, it’s nighttime. My kids look at the clock and know that they can get up when the bunny’s up. Moms can set the time for whenever they want the kids to wake up. It doesn’t work with Lou yet, but when Johan was three, it worked already. And after those nights when they kept you up, how do you manage to look awake? Get a good concealer under the eyes. That’s my secret. And when the baby is born, you’re still at home and you don’t go to work yet, you’ve got to sleep whenever you can. You don’t know how the night might be. How is being a first-time mom different from being a veteran mom? When my husband and I had Leni, we’d constantly lean over the crib to make sure she was still breathing. She wouldn’t even be crying and we’d be asking, “Is she okay? Is she okay?” I would keep the crib so close to the bed. Every time I’d wake up, I’d look in there thinking, Oh, I can’t believe we have a baby in there. Is everything okay? Why isn’t she crying? Now it’s like, “She’s good.” If Lou is quiet, great! Is there any sibling rivalry among your children? They’re a little jealous of one another here and there. Leni’s already at a certain school and now that the boys are joining, she’ll sometimes say, “When you get to the school, you will not play at the big playground like I do because I’m already a first grader and you’re not.” And I’ll be like, “Well, you started at the small playground too. They’re just younger than you are.” Sometimes they say things like that, but they’re pretty good. They get along. They love each other. What’s your best discipline trick? It comes down to bribery a lot of the times. It just does. At dinnertime, if someone doesn’t want to eat something, whoever doesn’t finish their dinner can’t go into the bed to snuggle with Mommy and Daddy. And they do eat after they hear things like that. Usually they’re pretty good though. How did you prevent diaper rash? The key is to change diapers regularly. When kids don’t poop in the diaper, it’s easy to say, “Oh, she only peed in there, she didn’t poop, maybe we just leave it,” but the longer the little butt is in there, especially in the summer when a sweaty butt is in the diaper with pee-pee, you get diaper rash. Also, I don’t put so much soap in the water when they take baths. It worked. I washed them with gentle lotions, but I tried not to overdo it. Speaking of lotions, do you ever use your children’s skin products? I use their sunscreen. We just went to Florida a few weeks ago, and I didn’t want to bring more things with me, so I used their sunblock. I still got tan. It’s not that it completely blocks rays out. It just helps you from getting burned. So let’s talk about you and Seal. How do you two keep your romance alive? The biggest way is with our vow renewal that we do every year. That’s like our ultimate date night. We look into each other’s eyes and tell each other how much we love one another and how much we mean to each other. We do that just him and I and the children, and then we have a party. What’s your go-to date night? We’ll go to one of our favorite restaurants in Los Angeles. Or to the movies. We just went the other night and saw The Hangover 2. We liked it. It was a silly stupid movie, but it was funny — we were laughing. Sometimes we’ll go shopping, just strolling around without the kids, not really having a plan. And how do you get gorgeous for those nights out together? I have this really great lipstick. It’s called Soft Sensation by ASTOR. It’s the perfect lip color because it’s a beautiful powdery pink — natural looking, but not dry. And some glosses won’t do that. I also like Vincent Longo’s cream blush. I also use Heidi Klum In An Instant wrinkle smoother that I do with Guthy-Renker. There’s also a great In An Instant serum. It has all the peptides — it’s like nutrition for your skin. One last question: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from being a mom? You need to put yourself on the same level as your children — see the world from their eyes. Think of how it sounds to them when you speak loudly. Always put yourself into their shoes. Remember that we deal with adults most of the time. When grown-ups don’t understand something, you might say, “Why don’t you understand this?” but you have to respond to a child differently and be more patient.

Heidi Klum broadens her brand with new lifestyles website http://www.denverpost.com/commented/ci_18233378 There's no stopping Heidi Klum. Model, mom, fashion creator and host of the popular "Project Runway" television show on cable, the German supermodel is on to her next project — a new AOL site aimed at women. In the past decade, Klum has gone from modeling lingerie for Victoria's Secret to putting her name on maternity wear and running shoes. Not that she's exactly become a slouch in the hot-body department: At age 38 and with four kids, she's still showing up in paparazzi photos wearing a bikini. But like Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey, she's also working at becoming a brand, spinning her good looks and affable personality across a variety of categories. Klum is working with Full Picture Entertainment to create content for heidiklum.aol.com, which covers style, beauty, parenting, fitness, nutrition, relationships, entertaining and decorating. In a telephone news conference, Klum said the website aims to answer the questions people always ask her about how she runs her life: What's her exercise routine? How does she make sure each of her children gets quality time? What fashion trends is she loving? To the latter question, Klum said she's trying to post a photo of herself every day — often with her hair a bit straggly and wearing no makeup. It's a little shocking — and maybe refreshing — given that Klum is usually so picture-perfect. It's self-indulgent to be sure. But is it any worse than Winfrey and Stewart splashing themselves all over their magazines and websites? What's a nice change of pace with Klum's site is that she brings the mom quotient into the picture. Klum said she relies on a large group of people in both her personal and professional lives to keep her rolling, and she's having them share tips, tricks and routines. There are makeup artists, hairstylists and a clothing stylist; fitness experts in Los Angeles and New York; a home organizer; interior decorator; party planner Mindy Weiss; and even her children's arts-and-crafts teacher, a woman named Shakuntala Zakheim. "They are like the umbrella, and I'm the stick," she said. Klum said she's planning to start a running program in June and will be posting updates about her progress. "I want to get women off the couch and do this run with me," she said. And, "If you can't run, then walk." She and her team have taped 50 videos and will be adding ones as topics arise. She says her product suggestions are a combination of high-end and affordable ideas. "Sometimes I wear jeans from Gap, sometimes they are way overpriced," she said, noting that one of her favorite recent purchases was "an awesome" snake print belt from Banana Republic that cost $40. "The modern woman isn't head-to- toe in designer brands," and style doesn't have to be a matter of how expensive it was. It's more about what looks good on you." She said she's looking forward to doing more about children's issues, and will offer ideas about healthy snacks and mealtime suggestions. And to that earlier question, how does she manage to give kids personal attention? Klum and her husband — the singer Seal — rotate through the ranks, alternating nights so each child gets regular "special snuggle time" before bed. So when does she get a chance to relax? Klum said she listens to music when she exercises "and goes into the zone," but she doesn't often feel the need to escape. "I'm not someone who puts herself in a spa for a day or two. I've never done that. I enjoy my work and all the people I work with — we just laugh. "It's the same at home. We cook, we're in the garden, we jump on the trampoline, we have two new German shepherds. We like to hang around at home. If you pick something you actually enjoy doing, you have fun every day of your life."

Heidi Klum Going Nude for 'Project Runway' Ad Campaign http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/heid...-project-194424 The former model will bare all to promote both the fashion competition show's ninth season and Lifetime's sexier image. One-time supermodel Heidi Klum is stripping down to promote Lifetime's Project Runway. While she has yet to sign off on a final image from a shoot held earlier this week, the show's host opted to bare all as part of the network's promotional campaign for the fashion competition series' ninth season, which will kick off this summer. The decision, which Lifetime president and general manager Nancy Dubuc made public during a broad-ranging discussion at Real Screen's Factual Entertainment Forum on Thursday, was inspired by the cable network's push -- and for that matter, need -- to embrace the contemporary woman. Though Dubuc believes women have changed more in the last 15 years than any other time in history, she told a packed room that the Lifetime brand that she inherited a year ago hadn't changed with her. Since taking the reigns at the femme-centric network, Dubuc has strategically pushed both her programming and her marketing teams to move away from that "women in peril" stereotype that has plagued the once top-rated Lifetime in recent years. Instead, her staff has been tasked with finding and celebrating female characters who are brazen, strong, confident and sexy. To drive that message home, all four characteristics flashed on screen during a network sizzle reel that Dubuc shared midpanel featuring the network's scripted, unscripted and movie fare, including Runway, Army Wives, upcoming Against the Wall and The Protector. To hear Dubuc tell it, having Klum show off her model figure is a way of showcasing a woman who has all of those attributes. It is also a way to court attention. (Proof: the image hasn't even been released, and this reporter is already covering it.) And as Dubuc acknowledged during the session, finding ways to cut through the clutter is an increasingly vital piece of the television formula today. Plus, she said with a big smile, "it's Heidi F--in' Klum."

Heidi also did a press event for her new perfume, Shine, when she was in NYC this week, although I haven't found any pictures: http://www.allure.com/beauty-trends/blogs/...-fragrance.html Heidi Klum's New Fragrance There's just something about Heidi Klum, isn't there? She's obviously beyond gorgeous, but so are lots of models. Maybe it's because she's also smart and funny. Maybe it's because Seal's cool. Maybe it's because she's a model who actually smiles. Whatever it is, I've always liked her—a feeling that was confirmed this week at the launch event for her new fragrance, Shine, a sultry floral-oriental that's out in September. Klum was passionate, charming—and looking as fierce as ever (how has the woman had four kids??!?). Here's what Klum had to say about Shine to the beauty-editor crowd who gathered at the Mondrian Hotel in New York City: The scent: "I didn't want something that was super-sweet. I wanted sensual. That was my main word. I didn't want clean. I want to smell like a woman. I wanted something that is long-lasting but not hovering." The process: "It's been a lot of back and forth [with the perfumers] because I'm quite anal. I couldn't really describe it as flowers. It was more emotions, feelings." The name: "Why did I call it Shine? My husband had a little bit to do with it. I get dressed a lot for my husband. A lot of times he'd say, 'You're beautiful. You shine.'" It's a very beautiful word, a positive word." On fragrance in general: "It kind of completes your look, even though you can't see it. It's kind of like the underwear you [wear that people] can't see."

AOL Seeks Heidi Klum's Advice in Million-Dollar Content Deal http://adage.com/article/digital/aol-seeks...nt-deal/227712/ AOL began publishing its content partnership with fashion model Heidi Klum today, AOL's latest celebrity acquisition and a key part of CEO Tim Armstrong's strategy to attract more female readers. As a sign of Mr. Armstrong's eager interest in celebrity-branded content, Ms. Klum is expected to reap an upfront salary close to seven figures and will also take a 50% stake in ad revenue generated from the venture, according to people familiar with the matter. AOL would not comment on financial terms. Ms. Klum, along with Full Picture Entertainment, will program video content focusing on advice covering a range of areas, from fashion and beauty to parenting, relationships and lifestyle. Ms. Klum has enlisted a stable of what she calls her experts to answer questions from readers as well as develop new how-to videos on an ongoing basis. Ad Age recently spoke to Ms. Klum about the partnership. Ad Age: What led you to this deal? Heidi Klum: I've been doing my job for over 18 years now, and most of the time people want to know how: How you do this, and how do you do that, and how do you juggle a family life, and what are the fashion trends, with what comb do you brush your hair with ... all kinds of questions from relationships to beauty and lifestyle. Ad Age: So...lots of questions. Ms. Klum: Questions beyond questions. And it's not really that I have all the answers but I kind of gathered a team around, what I call my experts, and they've helped me. And what I thought would be a good thing to do is team up with a company like AOL, because AOL is my audience. Now I have a bigger platform to share my experts with. Ad Age: Can you talk about some of the experts you'll be bringing into this new area of AOL? Ms. Klum: Definitely. For example, my art teacher. Actually, she's my children's art teacher for the past five years, and we do all kinds of things together. Seasonal things. Like, for Halloween, we'll dress pumpkins together. We made these videos so women can look what can you do with your family. I think these kinds of things are important for women. Ad Age: I can understand how women would be interested in seeking your advice on fashion or beauty, but why should they come to you for advice on parenting or crafts, or anything else? Ms. Klum: Maybe they don't. I don't know. I feel like I know a lot of great people, and they are experts in what they do, and that's why I have all these people to help me. It is my world -- I call it my world -- it is really for women who have all different things they're interested in doing. And I think it is up to them, whatever they want. What they want to get from the site. Some people don't want to get makeup -- they couldn't care less -- and maybe they'd rather know how they can improve their home and how to make their home more beautiful. Ad Age: Where do you go online when you're looking for advice on fashion or parenting? Ms. Klum: When I was pregnant, I would go to different baby blog sites just to see where I'm at when I was four weeks in my belly -- what I should look out for. What I should and shouldn't eat. I always found that interesting. And in terms of fashion, if there were shows I couldn't attend myself, I would to Style.com. The great thing about me for fashion, I still do a lot of shoots, and we're going to do something everyday on the site where we put up a new photo of me with a new look, and we'd do something on how you can get the same look for less. Ad Age: You've been a one-woman brand for a while, and while other top models have gone on to be more product-oriented, you've staked your claim on the media side of businesses. What led you to that? Ms. Klum: I don't know. I've done interviews since I started more obvious things like Victoria's Secret or Sports Illustrated, or if I hosted different shows like [on] MTV or "Project Runway." The more I've become public, the more questions I would get. What is the best shampoo? What is the best comb? Why not have a place where people can speak to the horse's mouth? They can speak to my experts. Ad Age: Alright, so what is the best comb to use? Ms. Klum: Mason Pearson. I love it. It is an expensive brush, but I if you take care of it, it will last forever.
