Tom Riley: Sex, violence and playing the lead in Da Vinci’s Demons April 16, 2013 http://metro.co.uk ‘So you want to go straight for the sex stuff?’ Tom Riley grins good-naturedly as we sit down to talk about his starring role as Leonardo in new TV series Da Vinci’s Demons. Well I hadn’t actually; normally, I go in for a little interview foreplay. But I’d dropped the word ‘bawdy’ into my icebreaker and Riley is happy to get the sex stuff on the table. ‘Shows such as Game Of Thrones have changed the rules about what cable TV can do – the nudity and violence is there, the gloves are off,’ he says. ‘As an actor, you trust that it’s part of the action.’ Wasn’t he anxious when reading the script that page 46 would say ‘Leonardo gets his arse out’? ‘A little bit,’ he laughs, ‘but it’s all very tasteful.’ The glint in his eye is tongue in cheek. We have gone down this route because Da Vinci’s Demons is the latest from the Starz stable, the US TV company behind the flesh-baring Spartacus series. And Da Vinci’s Demons duly opens with a pair of mighty buttocks – not Riley’s, though. The fulsome peaches belong to one Hugh Bonneville, deliciously sending up his Lord Downton persona, so loins are girded for a similar full-on spectacle. Da Vinci’s Demons, however, turns out to be cut from rather more complex cloth. The brainchild of David S Goyer, whose screenwriting credits include Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and the Blade trilogy, it’s a mash-up of historical fantasy and superhero drama, fleshing out the story of the young Leonardo before he became the iconic bearded figure of historical legend. It draws intriguing parallels between Da Vinci and superheroes, notably Batman. To be a superhero, you need a superpower and with Da Vinci, it was his remarkable mind. Batman creator Bob Kane cited Da Vinci’s ornithopter (a bird-like flying machine) as the inspiration for the superhero’s cape. And, like The Dark Knight, Da Vinci had a nightmare experience with bats in a cave as a child, grew up motherless and suffered at the hands of a mean father driven by a philanthropic desire to make the world a better place. Da Vinci as a proto superhero doesn’t look such a stretch after all. Landing the part is a massive break for 32-year-old Riley, best known for supporting roles in British TV dramas Monroe and Bouquet Of Barbed Wire. He heads an almost entirely British cast (including World Without End actor Blake Ritson and Sherlock star Lara Pulver) in a show that is launching worldwide in 122 countries, covering 40 languages. It calls for big acting on a grand scale. Was he daunted? ‘How do you get into the mind of the world’s greatest genius?’ asks Riley. ‘That’s certainly a challenge and, of course, I can’t. My brain can do one per cent of what his could do. But the main thing was to show how human he was, to show that he became great by making mistakes. He was easily bored – these days it would be called attention deficit disorder – and couldn’t keep still either.’ The personal side of Leonardo is highlighted by his steamy relationship with Lucrezia Donati, played by Laura Haddock. He’s playing with fire because she’s the mistress of Lorenzo de Medici, Leonardo’s powerful patron. ‘He’s the world’s greatest genius but he’s played for a fool by a woman,’ says Riley. ‘Lucrezia is the one puzzle that he can’t figure out.’ To add spice to the mix, Da Vinci’s Demons dips its toes into the intrigue surrounding Leonardo’s sexual urges, with episodes four and five tackling our hero’s ambiguous sexuality. ‘We certainly didn’t want to ignore that complex side to his character,’ says Riley, who’s not kissing and telling on which way it swings. Though he adds: ‘It’s safe to say that nothing was off-limits to Leonardo.’ There is something of the Leonardo geek about Riley, who talks with the kind of magpie mind intelligence you imagine Da Vinci possessed. He speaks excitedly about how the show achieved its startling special effects: with the help of an extravagantly expensive camera called a Phantom, one captivating sequence follows a starling landing in mesmerising slow-mo on Riley’s shoulder. ‘That was one of those moment in acting where you just go “wow”, did that happen?’ he says. Aware of the pressure of having a show riding on his shoulders, Riley took a true superhero approach by hooking up with the personal trainers who whipped Daniel Craig into his James Bond shape. ‘I lost nearly two stone and dropped to ten per cent body fat,’ he says. ‘I was training while still filming Monroe and you can see me shrinking from episode to episode. Luckily, that fitted my character. Leonardo was a vegetarian and very, very lean, so that was the look we decided on.’ His Da Vinci is certainly a lean mean fighting machine, an ambidextrous sword fighter and a man of wildly swinging moods. But what exactly were his demons? ‘He lives in the future so people can’t see what he sees, so he looks mad trying to realise his ideas,’ says Riley. ‘And because he was a bastard, shunned by society, the only way he could make money was by turning his hand to war engineering. But we know he was a humanist.’ ‘Most of all, though, his demons were in his mind. He achieved so much but he felt a failure because there wasn’t enough time for him to do everything he wanted to do. That’s humbling.’ Da Vinci’s Demons is on Fox on Friday at 10pm.

That won't go down well in Downton! Rob James-Collier ditches his trademark floppy locks in favour of a rugged shaved style By Louise Saunders June 11, 2013 http://www.dailymail.co.uk He shot to fame playing scheming butler Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey. But Rob James-Collier looked worlds away from his 1920s alter-ego as he debuted a rugged new look while attending an Evening With Downton Abbey event at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, on Monday night. Ditching his trademark floppy brown locks, the 36-year-old actor had completely shaved his head, transforming his 'do into a super-short buzz cut. Although, the Mancunian star still looked every inch the dapper dude, his new look would undoubtedly raise eyebrows among Downton Abbey's wealthy aristocrats, most notably the fierce Dowager Countess. Rob was joining his co-stars in the ITV1 period drama, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Phyllis Logan, Joanne Froggatt, as well as writer and creator Julian Fellowes and executive producer Gareth Neame, for the Downton event. The cast and crew are currently filming the fourth series of Downton, which will see Lady Mary Crawley - played by Michelle Dockery - return as the mourning mother of six-month-old baby son George after her beloved husband, Matthew (Dan Stevens), was killed off in the Christmas special. Speaking last month, Michelle told the LA Times: 'We're almost halfway through. We're filming episodes five and six. 'The predicament that Mary's in now is that she does need to find someone eventually. She has the heir to Downton, and she is under pressure to find someone. In that world, women had to find someone. It was all about marriage and who you'd spend the rest of your life with.' However, Dockery still has no clue what series creator Julian Fellowes has in store for the upcoming season. She added: 'Julian writes as he goes along, and the story develops from each set of rushes he watches. It's what's wonderful to play is the whole British, stiff-upper-lip thing. You keep calm and carry on. She's not weak. She's a survivor. So she will come through it.' In addition to Dan Stevens' departure, Siobhan Finneran - who played maid O'Brien in the series - has also exited, with Tom Cullen, Nigel Harman, Julian Ovendon, Dame Harriet Walter and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa joining the show. The fourth series of Downton Abbey will hit screens in the UK this autumn, before officially premiering in the US on January 5, 2014 on PBS' Masterpiece Classic.
