Until her eighteenth Doutzen lived with her parents in a country house in the Frisian town Eastermar. Geartsje mother is a nurse and works as a teacher. Rule-moderate Doutzen still staying at home. "Doutzen secretly had some photos sent to Paparazzi Models. If I had known, there were of course been all kinds of "buts". When she was invited for a test shoot, I went along. It was quite strange to see people with a tape measure at the hips of my daughter. The modeling world is very different from the Frisian village where she grew up. But I've always let Doutzen make her own choices. I see it this way, as a parent you accompany your child, after that you have to give her the freedom to explore the world. Of course it worried me. I thought she was going to Milan or Paris, but she went straight to New York. Occasionally flashed the image in my head beyond: a child of eighteen with a modelingbook under her arm, trudging to castings through the busy streets of a metropolis. In everything she did she was fanatically: speed skating, netball. Doutzen like to win. She was always a bellwether, a real leader. She also wanted to experience everything; life is quickly boring. When her career took off, she was in her early twenties, she called me once crying (emotion). She had a shoot on a Bounty Island in a beautiful house: fluttering curtains, overlooking an azure blue ocean. She cried, not of sorrow but because she almost could not believe that she could experience. Why me?, she thought. But that day, on that island she has turned a knob. "If I can not enjoy here," she said, "I better stop." I think Doutzen then discovered the pleasure in her work. Doutzen has a strong intuition, if a job does not feel good, she will not do it, how lucrative too. Together with Sarah and Mo, it forms a top team. They have made the right choices in defining her career. "I'm not getting a normal regular life when I'm older," said Doutzen often when she was eight years old. When she dreamed of a secluded cabin in the woods. I'm sure the glamorous life she has now, has never proposed. But it suits her. In the woods she would miss the city, as they are in town nature can miss. Finding balance is difficult, Doutzen is a constant battle. If Doutzen is in Friesland, we have quiet days where everyone does their own thing in the house until we come together at the dinner table. We love to philosophize with a glass of wine and a cheese. If Doutzen is with me, we are just back being mother and daughter. The fame or her success did not change that.

On the same day the Victoria’s Secret Swim Special aired on television, Angels Doutzen Kroes and Karlie Kloss were present, alongside Joan Smalls and Lily Donaldson. Kroes, who opened the show, returned to Milan after a 12-year absence. It was also a homecoming for Kloss, who’s skipped the fashion city on the circuit the past few seasons. And in light of both Kroes and Kloss hanging up their wings with the lingerie giant, perhaps this trip down the runway offers not only a blast from the past, but marks the beginning of a new chapter as well. This will make me sound really old—12 years, I think. (lol ...last time was S/S 2006... 9.5 years ago) Are you excited to open the show? Very excited. First of all, I’m just excited to be here, and that Karl asked me to be part of it is a big honor. And to open is a big treat. Were you expecting to get that call from Karl? No! It was very out of the blue. I’ve been really focused on my family and being home a lot. I’ve been really busy in Europe—I’ve been in Stockholm a lot, Paris…we’ve been based in Amsterdam, so it was easy to come over here. How does it feel to be back in Milan? It brings back so many memories. I came with my agent, Sarah [Keller], 12 years ago, but I appreciate it so much more now. Then, I was tired and we were late to fittings, and now I just appreciate being here and being part of the show. I think when you’re young, you don’t appreciate these things as much as when you’re older. And the good food in Italy, you know? What is your favorite restaurant in Milan? I actually went to a really good osteria last night. What do you order? I had carpaccio sea bass and arugula with veal. And I love simple pasta, like penne. It’s a long runway, so you’ll just burn it all off. I know! That’s what Lindsey [Wixson] was saying. She said: “This is how they keep us skinny!” How does it feel to walk that long of a runway? I actually like to have the long, simple runway. Sometimes it can be nice, [as opposed to] the turns and very complicated things. Instagram Ed Razek After I posted the news about @karliekloss leaving VS I got a number of texts asking me why I hadn't said anything about Doutzen @doutzen leaving at the end of last year. Fair question. The simple answer is I should have. Doutzen had a lucrative opportunity in Europe and it would have conflicted with her VS obligations. So, at her agencies request, we released her from contract. There was no conflict. No animosity. None of the nonsense I've read on Instagram. She had a great business opportunity, and I wanted to be fair to someone I adore and respect. That's all. I honestly believe Doutzen is one of the most stunningly beautiful people in the world. And I always will. I have told her that many times.
