April 10, 2012 Gisele's photograph immortalized Looks like Gisele has not only marked the career of designers and other professionals in the fashion industry. In a project created by the photographer Tim Mantoani, entitled Behind Photographs, the artist wanted to show the authors behind the most iconic images. The renowned Walter Chin chose as his favorite an image of our supermodel. The photograph, clicked in New York, appears in the editorial of the January 2000 issue of Vanity Fair magazine, and not only marked Gisele’s career but it’s also a reference to many models that are starting off in the fashion world. To register the photographers with their most memorable works, the creator of the project used the Polaroid 20x24 (one of the six cameras that exist worldwide) and portrayed beautiful images. Besides Gisele, the project also includes portraits of icons such as Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles, Che Guevara, Nelson Mandela, just to name a few. Also, the anonymous people who became known and immortalized through the lens of these great photographers. I love how her face and body are so versatile and can suit anything...Half commercial/half high fashion. She isn't boringly commercial nor freakishly high fashion. She's such a perfect mix of both. (which is alot of her appeal IMO and obviously the fashion world's haha). In Karl Lagerfeld's words about Gisele: "Skinny, skinny but with an athletic body. Sometimes I call this shot naked Twister. This was for Rolling Stone magazine and I remember we shot this in a tiny corridor outside Herb’s house in LA. It’s one way to get to know your co-workers! We shot this for my big Vanity Fair cover story. I loved Herb’s concept of me as Venus coming out of my shell. Not sure if anyone can tell, but Herb actually had a Plexiglas floor put on the top of the pool—just an inch or two below the surface. Love the strategically placed bejeweled feet! Posing as George Washington sounded weird, but knowing Herb Ritts was going to shoot it reassured me that it would be beautiful. I love how true to George Washington the clothes, hair and pose are, but with midriff! Perfect example of Herbs sense of humor! This is the first cover I ever shot with Herb.
