Vampires take to sky at Silver Falls Park

Film crew spends a week taping action scenes in snow-covered woods

BY DANIELLE PETERSON

April 2nd, 2008

More than squirrels were jumping from tree to tree last week as film crews for the movie “Twilight” finished shooting at Silver Falls State Park.

For the past week, crews have been filming a series of action scenes in the south end of the park—with stunt doubles swinging from a cable and harness through snow-capped fir trees at about 100 feet above the ground.

The film is based on the current New York Times bestselling series “Twilight,” about a forbidden love affair between a teenage girl and a vampire.

Unit production manager Mary Courtney said most of the movie is being filmed in the Portland area and that the scenes at Silver Falls park are an exception.

“We scouted out a lot of locations, but this had the best look,” Courtney said. “It has these beautiful big trees and grassy slopes. We just thought this was the best location for what we wanted to do.”

Bob Schmaling, a senior project manager with the Oregon Film and Video Office, said Silver Falls park has been featured in several films through the years.

“The last major films shot there were ‘The Hunted’ and ‘Last of the Mohicans,’” Schmaling said. “I know there were scenes filmed there, but I’m not sure they actually appeared in the movie.”

He said Silver Falls park is a destination that his office frequently recommends to scouts looking to film in Oregon.

The “Twilight” film crew of about 80 people spent 12-hour days shooting an opening scene and an action sequence. The crew had to work around the weather, waiting for the snow or rain to stop.

Since the rest of the film is shot in the Portland area, where there isn’t snow right now. the crew will have to get creative when integrating the Silver Falls scenes.

“The weather definitely affects the film,” said Richard Kidd, one of the film’s special effects consultants. “We don’t want to shoot in falling snow or rain. We may have to dress the next scene with snow or use special effects to alter the background.”

I'm super excited for this movie! I think Robert and Kristen are perfect as Edward and Bella. Then again, that's just my opinion. I know it's going to be tricky because everyone sees each character different in their own mind. I think we all have to wait until we can see it on the big screen to really make up our minds. ;)

^It's true that no movie is ever as good as the book, but that doesn't mean it'll be terrible.

Twilight is at it's height of popularity right now which is why they're making the movie. I actually don't think it would be any better if Stephenie wrote the script herself. A lot of things would still get cut out either way.
