"Winning's the only option"

"It's the most important match of the season and we are confident"

José Antonio Reyes is familiar with decisive Champions League matches, and on Tuesday he'll experience it for the first time as a Real Madrid player. The Sevillian appeared before the press today and was very confident the team would do well in front of their home crowd and earn a positive result before the return leg in Munich.

Can you really trust Bayern's bad patch?

It's not like we're going though the best moment either. It will be a unique Champions League match that we have to win or win.

What is the team's scoring plan?

To stick it in the net. Perhaps we're not doing what we need to be doing. It's the most important match we have right now.

Are you confident?

We are very confident. We trained with a lot of intensity. We ask that the fans be patient and that they come support us tomorrow.

Can the Champions League change everything?

We hope so. It would be a good sign. The match will only make us stronger for League play.

Do you think you are doing everything necessary to continue with this team next year?

There's a lot of season left and I haven't thought about what comes next. Thinking about such nonsense doesn't help right now.

Did Capello not start you on Saturday in order to reserve you for tomorrow?

He didn't give any clues during training. I hope that's the case though, but if it isn't, I want to do my best when I do get the chance. If I start, all the better.

Do you feel that Capello's job is on the line against Bayern?

We don't feel that way. We only want to win. We lose focus by thinking about other things.

How does the whistling affect your teammates?

It always affects a player. We're professionals and we know what we have to do. Hopefully tomorrow won't be like that. We need the fans' support.

Would the team prefer to be playing in Munich tomorrow?

Never. Everyone likes to play at the Bernabéu and teams have a lot of respect for this pìtch.

Will Bayern focus on the first third of the pitch?

We don't know, and we won't know until the game has begun. We'll have to move our lines up in order to score if they do stay back.

Do you share Helguera's opinion of having to play the counterattack at the Bernabéu?

We have to go out there to win. We can't stay back and rely on counterattacking. I disagree with him in that respect.

Real winger Reyes criticises Capello's tactics

Real Madrid's Jose Antonio Reyes has taken a swipe at coach Fabio Capello's defensive tactics and the way he uses players outside their normal positions.

The Spain winger, on loan from Arsenal, said he was frustrated at his lack of opportunities and, like Brazilian forward Robinho last week, went public with his grievances.

"The team are disoriented because one day I play on the left, the next on the right. But it doesn't only happen with me, it's the same for my colleagues," Reyes told radio Marca on Wednesday.

"Raul, Robinho and Guti all have to play in various positions but we are professionals and have to accept it."

A 3-2 first-leg win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday eased some of the pressure on Capello after a series of poor home performances.

However, Reyes had to watch from the substitutes' bench.

"I warmed up for 45 minutes but Capello didn't use me. I'm annoyed because I didn't want to miss that game. I don't know what I have to do to play (regularly)," Reyes said.

Although Real beat Bayern, the team have been criticised for allowing their opponents back into the match after the break, having stormed into a 3-1 lead in the first half.

Spanish media have been quick to blame Capello for sending his players out for the second period simply to defend their lead. Reyes appeared to back their assertions.

"We play defensively because that is the way the coach wants us to play, to prevent the other team scoring. But you also have to score because draws are not good enough," said Reyes.

"If we defended a little less we would have more liberty in attack. We are Real Madrid and should never go out to defend."

There is confusion at Real Madrid: Reyes

Real Madrid's Spanish international Jose Antonio Reyes admitted that the Spanish giants are blundering their way through the season, Spanish radio reported Thursday.

"The team is disorientated because one day I'm playing on the right and on the other I'm playing on the left," Reyes told Radio Marca, in the wake of Real's less-than-convincing 3-2 win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

With two away goals to hand, the German side are favourites to progress into this season's Champions League quarter finals after the last 16 return leg in Munich on March 7.

"But it's not just me. Robinho, Raul and Guti are playing in various positions, but we are professionals and we have to accept this," he added.

"Personally, I prefer to be on the left wing because that's where I am the most comfortable.

Reyes, who is on a season-long loan deal from English Premiership side Arsenal, made no attempt to disguise the fact he is not on the same wavelength as his under-pressure boss Fabio Capello.

"I was warming up for 45 minutes against Bayern and Capello didn't find it convenient to put me on. In other previous games, I haven't played as many minutes as I would have liked.

"I'm irritated because the game against Bayern was one I didn't want to lose out on. I don't have to pass an exam, all I'm thinking about is playing.

"He's given me freedom. I have to defend him for that," added Reyes, referring to the way Capello has repeatedly changed his role. "But I'm not getting many chances."

Despite Reyes' remarks, which many Real fans are likely to agree with after their erratic season, they still have a modest chance of ending their barren streak without a major title, which stretches back to 2003.

Real are currently fourth in the Spanish first division but only four points away from the league leaders Barcelona in the closest title race for many years and they could also still overcome Bayern in the Champions League.
