'Moneyball' rolls into fall

Sony has dated its Brad Pitt starrer "Moneyball," from Columbia Pictures, to go wide Sept. 23.

"Moneyball," directed by Bennett Miller, likely will play best with adult male auds, given its real-life inspiration from Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane and his team of castoffs who scored one of the most unlikely winning streaks in professional sports.

This year, the post-Labor Day weekend proved to be prime B.O. playtime for adult-driven films, including "Red," "The Social Network" and "The Town." Sony hopes to tap into that trend with "Moneyball," though overseas prospects could be tricky as sports-themed pics are a harder sell outside the U.S.

Based on Michael Lewis' best-selling tome, "Moneyball" is scripted by Steve Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin and co-stars Jonah Hill, Robin Wright and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Also on the Sony lot, Col's Shakespearean thriller "Anonymous" moved back a week -- now dated for Sept. 30 -- to make room for "Moneyball."

"Moneyball" will go up against Lionsgate's John Singleton helmed "Abduction," while in its new date, "Anonymous" is set to face Universal's "Dream House," toplining Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz, and fellow Sony pic "Courageous."
