Record-man

Raúl becomes the second all-time top-scorer in Real Madrid history

Real Madrid's Raúl doesn't seem to stop breaking records. He is the all-time top-scorer in the history of the European Cup and tonight he netted his 290th strike for Real Madrid, equalling Santillana's record. He is only behind Alfredo di Stéfano -307 goals- in the Club's ranking.

When Raúl made his debut against Zaragoza when he was 17 years old, nobody expected him to become one of the greatest icons in Real Madrid history. Close to 14 years later, he is the all-time top-scorer of the Champions League and, since tonight, Real Madrid's second all-time top-scorer along with Santillana. He has surpassed legendary players such as Puskas, Hugo Sánchez, Gento, Butragueño and Pirri.

His figures speak for themselves: 202 goals in La Liga, 61 in the Champions League, 15 in the Copa del Rey, 7 in the Spanish Super Cup, 2 in the World Club Championship, 1 in the European Super Cup and another in the Intercontinental Cup.

The captain is only 17 strikes behind Alfredo di Stéfano's 307-goal record. He has already netted 21 strikes this season: 16 in La Liga and 5 in the Champions League.

Raúl is also second in the ranking of the most games played with the team, with a total of 648 fixtures including tonight's clash. He is followed by Santillana, Gento and Fernando Hierro. Sanchís leads the ranking with 712 fixtures.

Player Ratings: Real Madrid 3-1 Sevilla

Real Madrid produced both a fluid attacking performance and defensive solidarity to produce a priceless result against Sevilla to extend their lead, and put their opponents out of contention for Champions League qualification. Goal.com analyses the individual performances...

Casillas - 6.5: Was rarely called upon but looked sharp and assured as usual.

Sergio Ramos - 8: Showed just what an asset he is up and down the right hand side. Did brilliantly to subdue Capel and got forward to good effect throughout the entire game.

Cannavaro - 7: Is a shaved head all Cannavaro needs to produce his A-game? He won the World Cup with one, but for much of his hapless Madrid career has let a little grow through. Today he was back to his bald best and besides one unpunished error, put in an accomplished and solid performance.

Heinze - 7.5: Quite like his defensive partner, surprised everyone this evening. Made a few errors but always atoned for them almost immediately. Made some crucial blocks and of course threw himself at the ball to score the crucial opener.

Marcelo - 6.5: Was not outstanding individually. He was well protected and supported by his team-mates and in that comfort zone he was able to put in a competent showing. Still room for improvement.

Sneijder - 8.5: Yet another on the long list of shocking performances today - shocking because they were much better than expected. Sneijder has looked lost for so much of the season, but his fantastic free-kick set up the first goal and his wonderful pass was the prelude to the second; he also played a crucial part in the third and final goal as well. Was all over the place, spraying accurate passes and doing well to cover and assist Marcelo in defence in the second half.

Gago - 7: Put in a performance that will inspire confidence within him and many Real fans who were losing faith in the young Argentine. Proved relatively solid up against the physical threat of Poulsen and Keita in the first half and his passing game is always a delight to watch. A slightly more sturdy Guti in the making.

Guti - 7.5: And Guti himself did a good job on the night. Setting up the third quite brilliantly and did well to keep things ticking over in midfield.

Higuain - 7: Eventually managed to take a chance he'd have struggled to miss. Cannot be faulted for his work-rate, and some of his runs were promising, but was too wasteful in front of goal to warrant a higher score.

Raul - 8: Another trademark performance from the captain, who put himself about from the first minute until the last and made things difficult for the entire Sevilla backline. Scored the goal of the game; a fantastic effort which put Madrid back in front less than two minutes after Sevilla had equalised. Indispensable.

Robben - 7: Constantly a thorn in Sevilla's side early on and his running was always a danger. In the second half, he by and large flattered to deceive and did not produce enough end product.

Substitutes: Diarra - 5.5, Julio Baptista - n/a, Robinho - n/a.

Raul Breaks Goal-Scoring Record

Real Madrid captain Raul Gonzalez Blanco has broken yet another record in his career, this evening equalling the great Santillana's goal-scoring record for Madrid, with the all-time record held by Alfredo Di Stefano in sight...

Raul is already the all-time top-scorer in the history of the European Cup to name one of several records. His 290th goal for Madrid tonight - a fine strike against Sevilla to put his side back in front - put him level with Carlos Alonso Gonzalez, nicknamed Santillana - a deadly striker for los Blancos in the 70s and 80s.

Alfredo Di Stefano, a legend of the 50s and 60s and currently the club's honorary president, holds the all-time record with 307 strikes.

Despite Di Stefano's lack of international exposure for many mitigating circumstances, he has regularly been spoken of in the same breath as Pele and Maradona, and for Raul to break a record held by such a great would be remarkable in this day and age.

He has already passed undisputed legends such as Ferenc Puskas, Hugo Sanchez, Gento and Emilio Butragueno in his 14-year career, beginning when he debuted against Real Zaragoza at 17 years of age.

The Prince of Spain has netted 202 goals in La Liga, 61 in the Champions League, 15 in the Copa del Rey, seven in the Spanish Super Cup, two in the World Club Championship and a goal each in the European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup.

It is an extraordinary range of goals and, in such great shape, he is likely to grab the 18 goals required to surpass Di Stefano's record next season.

Raul is also second in for Madrid in terms of games played. Tonight he played his 648th game for the club, with Manolo Sanchis leading the way with 712 appearances. This record is slightly further out of sight, but another three or perhaps four seasons could well see him break that record as well.

President Ramon Calderon took a moment to pay tribute to the legendary skipper.

"What delights me most is Raúl's attitude," he said. "He is a symbol, an extraordinary player that has broken practically every record.

"He is living a second youth and his teammates look up to him as to a leader."

Hi! Thank you LuNo and Chic!!

I think that there were Mamen and the kidsat the match, because the man on the radio said when he scored the goal that he ran and pointed to his children after kiss his ring, so I hope we get some photos.
