Cannavaro: Italian Mentality The Key

Fabio Cannavaro insists that the mentality of the Italy team will make up for the long-list of injuries in tonight’s friendly with Portugal.

The Azzurri go into the game at the Letzigrund Stadium in Switzerland without three key first team players in the form of Gianluigi Buffon, Marco Materazzi and Gennaro Gattuso.

Franco Semioli has also been forced to pull out of the squad, thus leaving Italy with only 19 players available.

However Cannavaro is not too worried by these absentees, and believes that Italy’s famed mental qualities will shine through.

“It’s true that there are lots of injuries, but the mentality of this side can goes beyond that,” Il Capitano stressed.

“Portugal are good at moving the ball around, but I think that we can impose ourselves on them.”

Cannavaro also had some words of praise for Coach Roberto Donadoni, who had a disastrous start to the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign after taking over from Marcello Lippi.

However after a draw with Lithuania and a defeat to France, Donadoni helped mastermind a run of nine wins and a draw from their remaining 10 games, as Italy topped the group above Les Bleus.

“Donadoni has proven his quality already as it wasn’t easy to come in after we had just won the World Cup,” Cannavaro explained.

“Now we are just thinking about having a great European Championships – it’s not about anything else.”

Cannavaro will win his 114th cap for his country tonight. The 34-year-old is just 13 caps short of all-time record appearance maker Paolo Maldini.
