Brigitte Bardot tells Christie that NJ's bear hunt is 'carnage'

SAINT-TROPEZ, France -- French actress turned animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot on Friday urged New Jersey governor Chris Christie to halt what she called the "scandalous carnage" of the state's annual bear hunt.

New Jersey wildlife officials say the six-day cull is needed to control a growing population of black bears. With two days of hunting to go, 369 black bears have been killed, the Division of Fish and Wildlife said on its website.

Last year, 592 bears were killed -- what hunters call "harvested."

Bardot, who left her sex-symbol days behind to devote herself to the plight of a variety of animals worldwide, told Christie that the hunt "tarnishes the image of your state."

Her Fondation Brigitte Bardot takes inspiration from the former Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi, who said countries' greatness could be judged by their treatment of animals.

"What can we think about the state of New Jersey, where 592 bears are condemned to death?" Bardot wrote.

Well, I love Brigitte, and I love animals. God knows I can't even stand to watch some of those humane society ads on the tv without weeping. At one time, I had 11...yeah, 11 dogs! Labs and cocker spaniels.

But we have taken much of the land from the animals, and now, they overpopulate and starve in the land we left them with. I'm from New Jersey, and I used to hunt in one of the wildlife management areas that they just opened to bear hunting. I don't hunt anymore...I'd just rather watch animals now, but I still don't think hunting is wrong. It's bred into our psyche over thousands of years. The black bears in New Jersey have been overpopulating to the extent that they come wandering up into people's backyards, looking for food. That's dangerous, and like deer, not good for the health of the herds.

I've never understood why some people think it's wrong to kill an animal in the field, but it's ok to slaughter them for food commercially.

There's nothing wrong with hunting, as long as it's done legally, in season, with no poaching. Of course, occasionally you'll get some moron in the field who just wants to kill stuff, but not often. I never wasted anything I killed, it all went to the table. And most hunters are like that, too.
