June 18, 20159 yr The Edit by Net-A-PorterJune 18, 2015In Full BloomModel Amanda WellshPhotographer Jai OdellStyling Morgan Pilcher As Brazil’s hottest new export, model AMANDA WELLSH brings power, energy and warmth to the runways. She tells LAURA CRAIK about her remarkable path to life as a working mother in New York City. Gisele Bündchen may have recently retired from the runway, but anyone worried about the supermodel-shaped hole left in her absence can assuage themselves with the arrival of fellow Brazilian, Amanda Wellsh. The striking 24-year-old has the same powerful body, warm personality and supreme confidence, and carries her beauty with a lightness that characterizes the best Brazilian models. That Wellsh is no overnight success only adds to her allure, giving her an air of worldly experience that is much in demand now after a string of ingénues. Scouted aged 16, it wasn’t until she starred in the Gucci SS14 campaign that Wellsh’s career really took off. Today, as well as walking for Gucci, Chanel, Diane von Furstenberg and Hermès, she is a firm part of the ‘Balmain Army’ (the troop of close friends, including Rihanna and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who surround Creative Director Olivier Rousteing), her womanly physique a perfect match for Rousteing’s statement clothes. The most surprising thing about her? She has a two-year-old son, Pedro. Like fellow models Arizona Muse and Jourdan Dunn, Wellsh proves that motherhood is no impediment to modeling – nor should it be.You have one of the least Brazilian names I’ve ever heard! Do you have any other nationalities in your heritage? Yes, my great-grandmother was from Wales. How were you discovered? I was scouted in my hometown, [Patos de Minas], which surprised me – I never thought I’d be a model. I was the tall, skinny but ugly one at school. I started modeling little by little at first, because I wanted to finish high school. Then I went to university to study law, but it wasn’t really my thing – I realized I just wanted to focus on modeling. University was where I met my boyfriend, Lucas – he’s now my fiancé and the father of my child. When I found out I was pregnant, I quit modeling for a bit and had my baby. Then I moved to New York and that’s when my career started to happen.A lot of models would have freaked out about getting pregnant so early in their career, but it sounds like you took it in your stride. Yes, I did. The moment I found out I was pregnant I moved back to my fiancé’s hometown in Belo Horizonte, and I stopped modeling for two years. It’s in a state called Minas Gerais, north of Rio de Janeiro. It’s beautiful – there are a lot of mountains and waterfalls.Has having a child given you a new sense of ambition? Definitely. My son still lives in Brazil [with my fiancé] and I live in New York; we have plans to all live together in New York soon. When I did my first fashion week, I wanted to do it right. Given the sacrifice of missing Pedro, I didn’t want to take any chances, so I was very focused. I worked out and ate healthily – I wasn’t going to be told “no”!Did you feel pressure to get back into shape? I breastfed for seven months, so I lost all the weight I gained in pregnancy. I also became more disciplined. Becoming a mother changed my point of view about work and my health; it gave me good motivation and good energy. People around me could feel it.Are you a makeup girl off-duty or do you prefer the natural look? I’m not wearing any makeup right now. I like to let my skin breathe, since I wear so much makeup when I’m shooting. I use Colbert MD skincare from my dermatologist, Dr. Colbert, in New York, and I drink a lot of water. And do you exercise? I’ve always been skinny, so I just work on my muscles and tone. I don’t run or do cardio – my cardio is at the airport when I have to run to catch a flight! When I’m with my son we go biking together in the park, and I have a personal trainer in New York.Is Gisele an inspiration to you? Definitely. Being a model is not an easy job. It’s not the fairy-tale world that everybody thinks it is. It’s really hard. You must really, really love what you do to become successful. Gisele worked for 20 years yet I’ve never heard a bad story about her – everybody only has nice things to say. She’s at the top and has the best reputation, something I really admire.Who else inspires you? I’m a huge fan of Angelina Jolie. I really like women who decide that with their success and money, they want to help the world. I worked once with [model] Toni Garrn; she really liked traveling to Burkina Faso in Africa with development organisation Plan International, and doing her part.Do you like to cook? No! I live by myself [in New York’s Financial District], and it’s really boring to cook for one. Also, I’m not going to invite friends over and cook for them because it would taste horrible and they’d have to order pizza!Whose Instagram feeds do you obsess over? I follow Kim Kardashian, of course – who doesn’t! And I love to follow the supermodels – Gisele, Cara Delevingne. I also look a lot at exercise feeds; they give you good ideas about exercising at home.I like your “I woke up like this” Instagram video, with the chewing gum stuck to your teeth – it was very funny! I’m a big kid. I’m getting older, but my mind is getting younger. Yesterday, I was running round the house with my son. It’s so good to have a sense of humor and see fun in simple things. I love to make people laugh – it keeps you young. What is your schedule like? I’ve just been to Switzerland, Germany and New York, then to the Hamptons for my birthday. I’m here in Brazil for four days, then back to New York. I love to travel. Will you still be modeling in 10 years’ time? I’ll be living in the US – maybe with three kids – but still working. I’m going to work until I die, so I need to keep this skin of mine really good, because in 10 years time, I don’t know what’s going to happen!
