Thanks for pictures from Inside Project Runway at the Paley Center sanja. Here's a write-up of the event from Blogging Project Runway:

http://allprojectrunway.blogspot.com/2007/...ect-runway.html

This is Robert, from Santa Monica (I'm the Librarian who hosted Tim Gunn during his book tour last spring -- and Roz reported from that event back in April -- so hello to Roz and Tim if they happen to read this). I'm reporting in from Tuesday night's "Inside Project Runway" panel talk at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills.

Laura K asked me to put together something for all of you on the evening's festivities, and here I am. I didn't write things down word for word, so most of the comments I'm mentioning here will be paraphrased. Hope you all like it. It was a great night, with 10 panelists in attendance. I was one of the earliest arrivals and got a very good seat right down in front.

The evening was held in the Paley Center's fairly small John Mitchell Theater, which seats only about 150 people. About 3 rows were reserved for PR production guests, and the rest was buzzingly happy fans. Things got started a few minutes later than the announced 7:30 p.m. start time, as Heidi's car apparently got stuck in L.A.'s typically horrendous traffic. But once she arrived, they got right down to things.

One of the Paley Center's executives introduced the night's moderator, Kristin dos Santos, from E! Channel. Kristin gave a great introduction, talking about how fast the night sold out and that the show had received one of the biggest media arrival turnouts of all of the Paley Center's great TV panel talks. She then introduced the show. We saw a great clip reel of highlights from the first three seasons: Santino's hilarious Tim Gunn impersonation when Tim asked for live version of it; Kara Saun and Wendy Pepper's nasty fight in the S1 finale when Kara Saun told Wendy she had no soul; Tim arriving with all of the dogs in the S3 dog/fashion accessory challenge; Santino's lively disagreement with Nina when she criticized his lederhosen lingerie team challenge creations; Keith getting booted for the pattern books; Austin having trouble with the mail delivery cart in the mail uniform challenge; Vincent slobbering all over Catherine Malandrino in Paris; Vincent's expletive-filled explosion when his personal clothes went through the fluff and fold (shown during the S3 reunion); and maybe another scene or two I'm forgetting.

Then Kristin got back up and introduced the evening's panelists: executive producer Rich Bye; S1 star Kara Saun; S2's Andrae Gonzalo; S2's Santino Rice (who walked up on stage and said, "C'mon, you can do better than that. More applause!" -- to which the audience went nuts); producer John Miller; executive producer Barbara Schneeweiss; executive producer Jane Lipsitz; executive producer Jane Cha; and host/executive producer Heidi Klum.

While the panelists were being mic'ed, a woman in the audience shouted out, "Where's Tim?" Kristin said, "I don't know, where is Tim?" Most on the panel acted as if they didn't know, then Heidi said, "He's probably doing his show." My guess was that he's promoting the book, or just back home in New York. Suddenly Kristin said that Santino would be answering for Tim tonight, to which Santino said in his Tim voice, "Yes, channeling Tim."

Kristin first question was if anyone had any idea how popular the show would be. Heidi immediately answered, quite lengthily, that they had no idea. She said you hope that things will work out well, but you can never predict. The show completely grew on word of mouth, with a small group of fans watching it and recommending it, and everything growing from there. Jane Cha chimed in that the first week, the ratings were abysmal and they weren't sure. It took until the first marathon of episodes on a holiday weekend when things started to take off. Jane Lipsitz then answered, saying that they weren't sure how the show would play. Would people see it as a show about sewing? Then Heidi came back in and concluded, "So to answer the question, no, we didn't know what would happen."

Kristin next asked how the producers keep up the suspense on the show. Rich Bye answered this one saying that they film whatever's happening and let the stories just tell themselves. And whatever they're filming may not be how things turn out. For instance, a designer who's in trouble in the workroom may suddenly surprise and do really well with the judges on the runway. The judges don't see what leads up to the runway, they just see the final product. And the judges are very unpredictable.

Kristin asked Heidi how she prepares to deliver the runway judgments to the designers. Heidi said that she really has to stop and think about things. Jane Cha chimed in that many people have literally passed out on the runway from exhaustion and the heat. Heidi explained that the runway segment, which lasts for only 15 minutes on the show, actually takes a full day. And so that they don't interfere with the sound, the air conditioners in the building are turned off, so it's hot as heck, and everyone's literally sweating bullets. Heidi then told a funny story about how they can get very giddy and silly on set and said that there is an episode this season where Michael Kors started laughing hysterically for no reason and couldn't stop, infecting everyone else with the giggles. They had to shut down for 30 minutes to compose themselves. Rich Bye interrupted, possibly facetiously, that the giggle fest would make the reunion show, and Heidi seemed delighted by that saying that she'd love to see that since it was very funny.

Kristin then turned to Santino and said, "I have a question for Tim Gunn. Did you have a favorite designer?" Santino, of course, totally dug into it, and as the audience and panel laughed hysterically, he said in his best Tim impersonation, "Santino, of course, I wanted to eat him up. Santino! Santino! Santino!"

Kristin asked the designers what kind of reaction they got from fans while they were on the show. Kara Saun said that people do recognize you, but since she was season one, it took a while before people started coming up to her. She said people would look at her like they weren't sure where they recognized her from, was she a distant relative, somebody they went to high school with, then they'd say, "You're on that show!" Andrae talked about being recognized, but he'd worked in so many different Starbucks along the way, so he wasn't sure. Most of the time people knew him from the show, so he finally got to the point where he'd tell people who asked if they knew him, "Do you watch Project Runway?" One woman told him no, and sure enough, she knew him from her neighborhood Starbucks. Santino acknowledged that he's such a character that it's hard for him to really go incognito. But the reaction to him has been great. Heidi then chimed in that he wears a shirt with his picture and name on it. Santino said he wore that on the casting calls for Season 3, but "it's not like I wear that shirt every day."

Kristin asked the designers if they have to win to really benefit from being on the show. Kara Saun said no, that the show opened so many doors for her as a costume designer for TV shows and many other things. The show is like a walking resume for her. Santino said that it's allowed him to travel the world to promote the show, which now airs in 30-some countries. He's known everywhere he goes now. He mentioned a glass ceiling for a certain level of designers. They work for other lines, creating the fashions that someone else's name goes on and they get no credit for it. Project Runway has allowed him to break through that ceiling, something he was unable to do before.

Kristin asked Heidi if she were an aspiring designer, would she try to get on the show. She thought for a second, then said, "I think I would," praising the show as a really great platform.

Next, Kristin asked the producers how they figure out the challenges, the timing, etc., since some challenges last a day and half, while others are longer. Jane Lipsitz said that they brainstorm the whole season, the budget they have to work within, what challenges might naturally flow into a following challenge, and put the puzzle together that way. Jane Cha said that they all pitch challenge ideas and that everyone has their favorite challenges that they've kept trying to get on the show "until this season" (I wonder if she wanted the menswear challenge?). On the subject of challenges, Heidi said that they're continually learning from each new challenge, and they frequently see a twist they should have thrown in on a current challenge and decide to pitch it for the future. They always want to keep the designers on their toes, and not feeling like they gotten just what they expected to get.

Kristin mentioned the celeb judges and cameos, highlighting Sarah Jessica Parker and said, "Where do you go from her?" Jane Lipsitz said, "How 'bout Marc Jacobs," indicating that she'd really like to get him. Heidi praised all the celebrity judges, and not just the celebrities, even the lesser known industry people who really know their stuff. Jane Lipsitz commented that the reaction they got from the designers to Sarah Jessica Parker was priceless, they couldn't have asked for anything better than several designers bursting into tears. Jane Cha said that there were more big names coming this season. Kristin tried to pressure her to give a name, but everyone clammed up. That caused Heidi to comment on spoilers that leak and get online. She said that there has to be someone on their team spilling the beans, then turned to everybody and said, "Who's spilling the beans? I'd like to know."

Kristin asked Santino, Andrae and Kara Saun if they were still watching the show? Andrae said he was watching this season in chunks, but that he doesn't have cable and needs to catch up. Santino said that he was writing a blog for Elle on the show, so he's required to watch. Kristin had also asked who they were rooting for and Santino said he liked Sweet P, Rami and Elisa. He mentioned that they were L.A. designers and they all knew each other before the show. Andrae mentioned that there is an L.A. fashion community, they all know each other, and everyone agreed with him, so it's like they're rooting for the home team. Kristin asked if they all get together to watch the show, and Andrae said that he does go to Nick Verreos' place to watch the show with him, "and that's VERY filmable." Heidi shrieked, "What happens???" but Andrae didn't spill the beans, so we never found out.

Kristin asked the producers if they thought of spin-offs for the show. Barbara Schneeweis mentioned that the original is so good, that they're certainly always looking for ways to use that model to create other shows. She said that there are so many aspects to the creative community where that model might work. Producer John Miller then made just about his only comment of the night, saying that they always want to protect the brand as well.

Kristin then asked about the casting process, are they looking for personalities or what? Jane Lipsitz explained that they're very aware that they're casting a TV show, so personalities are very important, but also that if there's no talent, there's no TV show. So the designers have to be able to do what they're expected to do. Rich Bye said that if the designers don't have a baseline skillset in fashion design, they're not cast. Santino then cracked everybody up by interjecting, "But when you have both...lightning in a bottle!" I don't remember who said it, but one of the producers said that in this season's casting, Tim Gunn had a few standard answers for designers who didn't pass muster. One of them was that the designer was still a "fashion school designer" and another was to just encourage them "good luck for Project Runway 5." Santino then swooped in again, in full Tim imitation, "We're going to have to pass."

Kristin then talked about the different types of reality television, citing "The Hills" and "The Simple Life" as examples, and mentioned how some of them are anything but real. So she asked how real Project Runway is? Jane Lipsitz said that drama just happens, they turn on the cameras and film it. Rich said that they don't try to engineer anything. For instance, in interviews with cast members, they don't say, "Andrae, did you hear what Santino said about you?" to stir up conflict. Heidi also commented that if the show wasn't real, the audience could tell.

Kristin asked the designers how they felt watching themselves on TV. Kara Saun said, "Well, there were times when I thought, 'Look how I look in those pants.'" Andrae said that while watching his season he thought of himself, "I really like this guy! In real life I'm such an asshole." Everyone laughed, so I'm sure he was joking about that last part. Santino said he loved seeing the parts where he and Nick were making up songs, laughing, etc., because he was always trying to make himself laugh. The hours are so tough and everyone's so stressed out that he really enjoyed letting loose and having fun.

Kristin asked how they kept the show focused on the competition and didn't veer into sleazy reality storylines, like who was sleeping with who. Jane Lipsitz cracked that they weren't allowed to sleep with each other. Kara Saun commented that she appreciated the fact that they focused on the designers' talents and creativity. Jane Cha talked about how they just let the cameras roll and capture what happens, and they always end up with great stuff. She mentioned Elisa's quirkiness, her spit mark and rubbing her fabric on grass. "You can't make that stuff up."

Kristin then turned the questioning over to fans in the audience. The first question was a man who asked how do you pitch a show like Project Runway? Heidi said that they pitched to both MTV and Bravo, but Jane Cha stopped her and said, "No, we pitched it first to MTV and they passed. They regret that now." She said that Harvey Weinstein then let them start filming the show and Bravo signed up soon after. The man who asked the question didn't seem satisfied with their answer, so he asked again, "But how did you pitch Project Runway?" Jane Lipsitz flat out answered, "We brought Heidi!" Heidi then raved about the show again and how she loves the challenges. Jane Cha stopped her and said that Heidi is always saying that she wants to surprise the designers by saying, "You have 50 cents and one minute. Go!"

The next woman in the audience talked about how heatedly she and her best friend disagreed about last week's menswear challenge, and that made her think about Jeffrey's drama with having others do some of his work and the missing receipts. Many in the blogosphere felt that he'd cheated, and so she wanted the producers to comment. Jane Lipsitz said that he hadn't cheated, and Rich Bye said that we didn't see it, but that it wasn't just the receipts that convinced them he hadn't cheated. The receipts led to other contacts with contractors Jeffrey had worked with, and they definitely researched things thoroughly. Jane interjected that there was plenty of "due diligence" to make sure that they were on solid legal footing.

A man then got up and said he had two questions, and then held up his phone. Kristin asked him if his questions were in his Blackberry and he started to read the first one. The first was from Jeffrey Sebelia. Kristin interrupted him and asked if he was a contestant on "Average Joe" several seasons back, and he meekly put her off. He then said the question from Jeffrey was for Santino. Jeffrey wanted to know "What happened to the Bad Boy Tour?" Santino laughed his head off and then explained that he and Jeffrey had made several appearances together to promote the show, and that they ended up calling their appearances together "The Bad Boy Tour." The guy's second question was from Nick Verreos. Nick asked him to say hi to everyone and that he wished he could be there. Nick question's was to the producers, wondering if there would be any more menswear or figure skating fashion challenges? The panelists all laughed, and one of the producers commented that they don't want to repeat themselves.

The next question came from Tony Tripoli, one of Kathy Griffin's "main gays" from her show's first season, and one of my good buddies. Tony asked the designers about their interviews during each episode, how fair they were and how much, if at all, they intruded on their ability to complete a challenge? The designers really took to that one, rolling their eyes knowingly. They all said they were definitely a game changer at times, but that they were fair. Everyone got interviewed for the same amount of time. But Santino commented that there many times he'd struggle with something, trying to wrap his brain around a challenge, and just when he'd really get chugging into a groove, he'd hear, "Santino, can you come with us?" Andrae also mentioned that so often on the shows with team challenges, you'll see the other designers freaking out, like, "Where is he?" And the answer is, he's in his interview, even though his teammates are, like, "This is the most important thing he'll ever sew."

One more fan got up and asked how the timing of the challenges works. Santino said it's sun-up to sun-down for a month, with no breaks. They get up in the early morning, wait around for an hour or two to be taken to the challenge or the workroom, and then it's breakneck work until midnight or whenever they're given, then back to the apartment. Most go to sleep, but some (like him) stay up well past that, so it's literally 16-18 hour days.

Finally, one last female fan got up and asked how designing on Project Runway compared to their everyday designing. She had a bit of trouble articulating her question, but Kara Saun interjected that there obvious differences in that in her regular life she's never told, "You have 50 dollars and one hour at a grocery store to shop." Andrae also commented that all of the designers' skills and talent are transferrable between the show and real life, but the situations are completely different.

Kristin wrapped things up by pleading with the cast and producers to spill a secret or two about this coming season. They all hemmed and hawed and didn't give up a thing, then Barbara Schneeweiss brought it to an end by saying, "Watch what happens."

The night then broke up, with the audience spilling out into the lobby. The cast and producers joined us out there and took photos with many fans and signed a lot of autographs. Heidi was the hardest to get to, of course, but I snapped a few shots.

All in all, it was a very fun night, and I wish all you BPR faithful could've been there as well. These Paley Center panels are always filmed, so if you're ever in Los Angeles, visit the Paley Center in Beverly Hills and you can easily watch it for yourself. And pretty often, the panels end up as extras on TV shows' complete season DVD sets, so this one might land on a future PR set, so keep your eyes peeled.

Heidi needs to keep her day job as she has a terrible voice!
