Natalia Vodianova’s Fighting Talk

24 JUNE 2013 ELLA ALEXANDER

NATALIA VODIANOVA will tonight show her support for a charity that holds a particular resonance for her, Borne, which raises money for research towards premature births. The model and philanthropist will co-chair an Arts For Life event, part of the Chelsea and Westminster Health Charity - which this year supports Borne.

"As a mother, I naturally feel compassionate towards other mothers," Vodianova told us. "My pregnancies were delightful and so easy, I never even felt sick. I haven't experienced these issues, but my mother really suffered when she had my sister and I. One of my sisters was born with cerebral palsy and autism and that really affected our lives and made us vulnerable as a family. Then my youngest sister was born after just five-and-a-half months, she had to be put in an incubator. Now she's fine and we're preparing to send her to Harvard, but it was close. My mother was so sick and very alone. I want others to lead a different life to that."

Of course, Borne and Arts For Life aren't the only charities the Russian beauty works with - her "life passion" is the Naked Heart Foundation, which helps improve the lives of underprivileged children living in Russia. Her annual fundraising Love Balls - glitteringly glamorous affairs attended by the fashion industry's key names - have become synonymous with the charity and this year's is set to be the most lavish yet, as Vodianova has recruited the help of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco to help with the proceedings.

"They have both been incredible," she said. "I met Charlene at a fashion show actually and wrote her a letter asking for her patronage. She gave me a positive response and managed to convince her husband into helping too. When men and women come together, it's always more powerful than either sex working on their own."

Last week, Vodianova premiered her first film as a leading lady for a cinema adaptation of Albert Cohen's 1968 novel, Belle du Seigneur, starring alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers. She plays a Swiss married woman, who has an affair with a Jewish diplomat, defying traditional perceptions of women.

"I just fell in love with my character, Arianne," she said. "The film's set in the Thirties and, for that time, she really did make decisions that were above preconceived ideas of what she should be. She considered herself free even when she wasn't. I always knew I would love acting, I was just waiting for the right role to come up. The story really moved me."

She is open to new roles and is currently reading a few scripts, but wants to remain picky about future films. However, there is one project that she'd be very interested in should the occasion arise.

"I'd love to play Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face," she said. "She is one of my heroes - she was such an incredible philanthropist."

For now, fashion is her day job. It "pays the bills", as she says, and she doesn't feel inextricably tied to it. In fact, it was her dissatisfaction with modelling that led to her establishment of the Naked Heart Foundation.

"As soon as I felt comfortable financially, which was a while ago now, I started to feel really unfulfilled," she recalled. "Work as a model wasn't enriching for me. I enjoy it, but it's not something I could never give up. The Naked Heart Foundation gives me a higher purpose and fills that void. I can be choosy about what jobs I take now - they have to meet a certain criteria, do they have a positive impact? Do they have a good image? Is the brand elegant? Does it serve women? Sometimes, if I feel strongly about a brand, I'll work with them for free. For example, with Stella McCartney, I am paid, but it's symbolic - and that's because I love Stella and what she stands for."

This year Diane von Furstenberg - one of her personal role models - gave Vodianova an Inspiration Award at the designer's annual awards ceremony for demonstrating leadership, strength and courage within her work. Does she ever wish she could change anything about the fashion industry?

"My heart lies elsewhere," she explained. "You have to choose your battles and the problems within fashion are not mine to fight."

Natalia Vodianova on Paris, pain au chocolats and pregnancies

Top Russian model and philantropist Natalia Vodianova is backing the Chelsea & Westminster Health Charity's research into premature births.

The face of Guerlain beauty will co-host a pre-auction dinner alongside Nadja Swarovski at London's Saatchi Gallery in support of Bourne, the new ground-breaking research initiative into premature birth under the Arts for Life umbrella.

"When Nadja told me about the work of Professor Johnson and the research that he's working on and implementing - it's really closely related to what I care about," Natalia told us via Skype from her office in Paris.

She explains: "My sister was born with cerebral palsy when I was six; she also has deep autism which is also a cause-effect of the stroke."

Vodianova, who lives in the French capital with her three children from her first marriage to artist and heir Justin Portman, is passionate about the cause. "I had perfect pregnancies, fantastic deliveries, everything was very easy. My mother, on the other hand… it was very hard for her to keep her babies in, and my second sister was born at five and a half months."

A mother to Lucas, 11, Neva, seven, and Viktor, five, the 31-year-old says that aside from back pain, motherhood is the most rewarding job of all. "I think I wanted to have a child when I was six," she laughs. "I remember talking to my mother about it and saying I want to have children too!"

On Wednesday Arts for Life, the health charity of Chelsea & Westminster, will auction a curated selection of artwork in association with Christie's. Artists who have donated to the cause include Anish Kapoor, Juergen Teller and Zaha Hadid - Natalia's favourite.

"I have a kind of a cool library from Zahar. I love what she does," reveals Vodianova, who estimates that she now only spends around 20 per cent of her time modelling.

Going to her office every day, she is currently in the throws of organising her next Love Ball, the annual fundraising event which raises money for her Naked Heart Foundation charity, which helps disadvantaged children across Russia. Under the patronage of Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco, the ball will see ballet, classical music and opera performances come together inside the spectacular Opera Garnier de Monte Carlo.

"Raf Simons is doing something for me for the evening," she says excitedly. "One thing is sure: it's going to be a red dress, like always."

Vodianova, who swapped the idyll of the West Sussex countryside ("Oh I miss it, I miss it often") to be with her new partner Antoine Arnault (CEO of Berluti and the son of LVMH boss Bernard - one of the world's richest men) is settling into Paris life well.

"We're still in the pink period, where we have croissants and pain-au-chocolats every morning," she says, before admitting that she is yet to master the French language. "I understand quite a lot but my French is really - it's still so… très mal."

The move also sounds like a homecoming for Natalia, who kept a job afterschool to help keep her family afloat before becoming one of the world's highest-paid models.

"I always loved Paris - it's actually probably the city I love the most because when I came here [for the] first time I came here a poor girl, and that meant that I walked and took the metro, so I understand the geography of it so well."
