Box office update: 'The Other Woman' dominates Friday with $9.3 million

In The Other Woman, a man’s wife and his two mistresses join forces to take him down a peg. They just so happened to do the same thing to Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Don’t cry for Cap, America. In his fourth week, the super-soldier ranked No. 2 by collecting a Friday haul of $4.5 million, which should yield a $15 million total by Monday morning. It has already earned $213 million domestically (and roughly $620 million if you’re looking globally, and why not?). In 2011, the original Captain America topped out at $177 million domestically, for a $370 million worldwide take. Consider that The Avengers’ bump.Fox’s comedy starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, and Kate Upton vastly overshot expectations to collect $9.3 million on Friday night, finally knocking the Marvel superhero sequel from its three-week run at the top of the box office. Some only expected the raucous girlfriends farce to reach $13 million total for the weekend, though it’s now on track to do at least double that — evidence that this movie has Bridesmaids-strength appeal.

In its second week, Sony’s religious tearjerker Heaven Is For Real claimed the bronze on Friday with $4 million, while two other new movies seem to be struggling. Despite deep affection for the late Paul Walker, his parkour-heavy action/thriller Brick Mansions opened in fourth place with $3.6 million. The Relativity release, a remake of the French crime thriller District 13, features the Fast and Furious actor as a cop in a crumbling, futuristic Detroit on a quest to take down the crime lord who killed his father. And the Lionsgate horror flick The Quiet Ones came in sixth place with a paltry $1.5 million.

Here’s a rundown of the Top 5 for Friday:

1. The Other Woman – $9.3 million

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – $4.5 million

3. Heaven is For Real – $4 million

4. Brick Mansions — $3.6 million

5. Rio 2 — $3.3 million
