Well now, that's a question of personal taste, isn't it, Bianca? "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and all that. And lest we forget: De gustibus non est disputandum.

My posts represent my opinion and my opinion alone. I never said otherwise. I thought that was the general presemption when a person makes a post or statement.

Olivier Rousteing and His Casting Director Jess Hallett Discuss the Balmain Army’s New Recruits for Spring 2017

June 25, 2016 11:00 am
by Alexander Fury

26 hours before Olivier Rousteing’s Spring 2017 show for Balmain, and the atmosphere is, remarkably, calm—upbeat, even. Valery Kaufman is in fittings, a long multicolored dress in contrasting bands of crochet, eyelet-punched suede, and gold chains is tweaked; a bandbox-striped cardigan added and removed. Francisco “Chico” Lachowski is about to leave, his outfits done. Rousteing is bouncing about the room, grinning, forever cranking up the volume on his laptop after an assistant subtly turns it down. And Jess Hallett—Balmain’s London-based casting director for the past two years of womenswear and two seasons of menswear is on the phone, finding out where a model has disappeared to.

“You must say we have fun, this is the most important thing,” Rousteing admonishes, while the laptop blasts Phil Collins’s “In The Air Tonight” (no word of a lie, I hope it makes the show soundtrack) and Valery struts in time with the song’s famous drum fill. The calm comes from the fact Balmain has already fitted 64 looks by close of Thursday. “We just kept going,” laughs Hallet. “Oliver is very decisive!” A running order is pinned on a board; a few blank spaces are peppered with names: Alessandra (Ambrosio); Natasha (Poly); Doutzen (Kroes). “Today, it’s all the girls,” says Hallett. With that lineup, it certainly is. The collection runs, at this point, to 79 exits, 20 more than the Fall womenswear. It’s big, I remark. “We have men and women,” states Rousteing, in his buttery, Camembert-strong French accent. “So it ’as to be big!”

The casting at Balmain also has to be big—both in numbers (30 male models, 10 female), and impact. Hallett is the woman responsible for pulling it all together. Casting Balmain doesn’t just mean a few shows: It means pulling together the house’s campaigns, which entailed the mammoth task of wrangling a trinity of supermodels—Cindy, Naomi, Claudia, no surnames required—for Spring’s Steven Klein shoot. Hallett also cast the campaign and runway show for Balmain’s H&M extravaganza, as well as the presentation of Olivier Rousteing’s recent collaboration with Nike. “I think it never stops,” says Rousteing, when asked about the casting process. “We never stop our communication. Even when we do womenswear, we think of what kind of men we want.”

The all-star cast of Balmain’s womenswear shows indeed is well documented, but increasingly the menswear offering is similarly high-octane. “The beauty of the girls has to be matched with the boys,” says Hallett. “There’s a very definite beauty with the girls. They’re all very different, and they’re from all over the world. It’s very democratic in that way. But there’s a beauty and a confidence and a sexiness about them. And we really wanted to match that with the boys.” Lachowski is joined by fellow Brazilian Marlon Teixiera, the Frenchman Baptiste Giabiconi, and Jon Kortajarena, who is Spanish. It also helps that that bunch are the supermodels of male models, as it were. “I think we’re pretty loyal with our models,” comments Rousteing. “We build a family, a story, a Balmain army, so we want to keep it loyal—but our family gets bigger and bigger.” He laughs. “I’m too emotional about people, she’s the tough one! But that’s what I need!”

Hence the fact that, alongside the usual Balmain Army, Hallett asserts there are just as many little-knowns, and even first-timers. “It’s important to have a Francisco,” says Rousteing, as said Brazilian übermodel manueuvers his 6’ 3” frame out of a chambray ensemble and then out the door. “But I think Balmain is about having a Francisco, a Marlon, and a Nathan,” he gestures to a black model who signed to his agency only two weeks prior to Balmain’s show, which marks his debut. “It’s a good balance. That’s what is Balmain, you can find the big stars or you can find the new faces. And it’s not a matter of background, or color, or a culture. It’s about a global casting.”

The job of Hallett is to bring that world view into a small studio in the tony 8th Arrondissement of Paris—physically, in terms of getting the models to the door, but also philosophically, to act as an outside eye herself, to bring a new point of view. “She has this eye,” says Rousteing, “She’s really good at what I should and shouldn’t do sometimes!” Hallett laughs at that, loudly. “Sometimes, it’s like ‘Wrong house, sorry!’ ”

The mood is buoyed by the recent news of Mayhoola’s acquisition of Balmain—which, Rousteing comments, “Isn’t even like writing a new page in the book—it’s starting a new book!” He’s excited by the possibilities. Rousteing is, after all, a man with a vision—and Hallett is the woman who helps him figure out who’s going to wear it best.
