Cannes 2008, a complete disaster for Naomi ? Part I.

Naomi causes more controversy as she brings convicted con artist as her date to Cannes

By Emily Sheridan (dailymail.co.uk)

Just weeks after her furore at Heathrow, Naomi Campbell is at the centre of controversy again, after bringing a convicted con artist as her date to Cannes.

The troubled supermodel, who turns 38 today, caused a stir when she arrived on the arm of Christophe Rocancourt at the premiere of Steven Soderbergh’s new movie Che.

Dressed in an innocent white gown, Naomi was on her best behaviour as she strutted down the red carpet, towering over Christophe.

Compared to Christophe’s colourful past, Naomi’s brushes with the law appear rather small.

The French-born imposter, 41, conned affluent investors out of hundred of thousands of pounds by using various aliases, even claiming he was a Gallic relative of the American society family Rockefeller.

Christophe claims he made 1million French francs in his youth through his various personas.

After moving to America at the age of 24, Christophe created society personas on both the east and west coast of the U.S., falsely claiming his “mother” was Sophia Loren and "uncles" were Oscar de la Renta and Dino de Laurentiis.

During his time in Hollywood, he befriended action star Jean-Claude Van Damme and lived with Mickey Rourke.

On his official website, born-again Christian Christophe insists he held Mickey in high regard, but their friendship deteriorated “without any financial conflict”.

In 2001, Christophe and his now ex-wife, former Playboy model Pia Reyes, were arrested in Canada and charged with defrauding an elderly couple. Pia was later released without charge after pleading her innocence with the scam.

The following year, Christophe was extradited to New York where he pled guilty to three of 11 different charges including theft, grand larceny, smuggling, bribery and perjury.

He was accused of defrauding a total of 19 people. He admitted three counts of fraud to avoid the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Christophe was fined $9million, and was ordered to pay back his victims $1.2million and sentenced to five years in prison.

After “finding God” in prison, Christophe insists he has learned from his mistakes and is currently in talks to make a Hollywood movie of his biography ‘I, Christophe Rocancourt: Orphan, Playboy and Convict.’

Streatham-born Naomi was banned from British Airways last month following allegations of a row over baggage, which police were called in to defuse.

Campbell's fiery temper is well-documented - eight years ago she pleaded guilty to assaulting her former assistant Georgina Galanis with a telephone in Canada in 1998.

Last year, Campbell was ordered to perform five days community service and attend anger management classes after she was found guilty of reckless assault against her maid Ana Scolavino.

Cannes 2008, a complete disaster for Naomi ? Part II.

Naomi Campbell: It's my 38th birthday party and I'll cry if I want to

By Daily Mail Reporter

Supermodel Naomi Campbell celebrated her 38th birthday with a party in Cannes last night and an afterparty on Diddy's yacht. She left at 3 AM, purportedly crying.

Naomi Campbell was reduced to tears on her birthday last night - recalling quite vividly the Lesley Gore hit song It’s My Party And I’ll Cry If I Want To.

Naomi celebrated her 38th birthday with friends in Cannes, and then moved on to a VIP party aboard music mogul P Diddy’s yacht.

She was all smiles as she arrived in a glamorous lace frock but, around 3am this morning, she was spotted looking clearly upset.

The reason for her meltdown remains unclear, but Naomi and Diddy do have a history of confrontation.

According to reports last year — at Jermaine Dupri’s Grammy afterparty in LA — Diddy shouted at Naomi in the middle of the party, leaving her shocked and upset.

And he also managed getting in a few choice words for the model’s companion, Terence Howard, as well.

Earlier, Naomi sparked controversy after she brought a convicted con artist as her red carpet date.

The supermodel was joined by Christophe Rocancourt at the premiere of Steven Soderbergh’s new movie Che.

He certainly has a checkered past - the French-born 41-year-old conned affluent investors out of hundred of thousands of pounds by using various aliases, even claiming he was a Gallic relative of the American society family Rockefeller.

After moving to America at the age of 24, Christophe created society personas, name-dropping his “mother” Sophia Loren and uncles Oscar de la Renta and Dino de Laurentiis.

During his time in Hollywood, he befriended action star Jean-Claude Van Damme and lived with Mickey Rourke.

According to the mirror.co.uk:

Naomi Campbell was overwhelmed by emotion as she celebrated her 38th birthday on board ex-boyfriend P Diddy's yacht in Cannes.

Looking fabulous in a camel-coloured minidress, the supermodel partied the night away with close family and friends.

Happily, we're assured her midnight tears had nothing to do with Diddy - or her age. "Naomi was simply happy to see friends that she hadn't seen for a long time," says a fellow reveller.

"She doesn't drink - she just had a great evening with lots of laughs."

The model continued to celebrate yesterday, hosting an intimate dinner with pals. And, going one better than the Queen, Nome will enjoy a third birthday bash tonight - Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana is hosting another star-studded party in her honour.

The supermodel who's larger than life

According to the Independent:

It's a prospect to strike fear into the hearts of airport staff and personal assistants everywhere: Naomi Campbell, but 30ft tall – more than twice the height of a double-decker bus.

The hot-tempered Campbell is to be immortalised in a series of sculptures that will create a lasting, if controversial, monument to her status. She has been posing for the photographer Nick Knight, who is using three-dimensional scanners to create the sculptures.

Campbell ranks among a handful of supermodels who can be identified purely by their first names. But in her case, a reputation for intemperate behaviour tends to overshadow her work on the catwalk. She was arrested on a plane last month after her complaints at the loss of her luggage during the Heathrow terminal 5 fiasco were deemed too vociferous. She was also ordered to attend anger-management classes by a US court after admitting throwing a mobile phone at her housekeeper in a fit of temper.

Despite this, Campbell has remained one of the most popular British models of her generation, with perhaps only Kate Moss exceeding her fame. Knight said he wanted to create a unique sculpture of "one of the most famous and beautiful women in the world".

He said: "Photography is changing completely, and one of the things that's doing this is 3-D scanning. You get a 360-degree view of her, and because it's all digital, that data can be used to output real objects. You can lay one image over another and create sculptures that would never have been conceived if you were chipping away at marble."

He scanned Campbell "straddling the barrel of a large tank" which will form one sculpture. Another will be a "circle of three Naomis, like The Three Graces", but designed to be viewed from within the circle and in a darkened room.

Mr Knight is still to decide what material to use for the sculptures, with alabaster and glass fibre both possible. "When you are modelling one of the most beautiful women in the world, the choice of materials is important," he said.

He hopes to have the sculpture ready by the end of the year but is still considering how it will be unveiled. When asked if it could be installed at the entrance to Terminal 5, as a symbol of the nation's rage over lost baggage and delayed flights, he simply laughed.

Naomi Campbell Interview: Cannes 2008

Rossella Frigerio (translated), posted on May 24th, daily.chictoday.com

Paola Pollo, 24 maggio 2008, corriere.it

Flipping through my usual spate of newspapers over breakfast, I chanced upon an exclusive interview with the ravishing Naomi Campbell given by the correspondent of Il Corriere della Sera as they celebrated Naomi’s birthday on Stefano (Gabbana) & Domenico (Dolce)’s yacht last night in Cannes. Savouring a lavish meal (including a scrumptious chocolate cake), and then moving on to the infamous Baoli along with 1500 guest (that included Charlotte Casiraghi and Rose McGowan), she talks about everything from her desire to become a mother to Hugo Chavez…

Just one candle on your cake, but you are celebrating more than 30…closer to 40 than to 20 «

I know. But I don’t think about it. I’m happy to be where I am and of my age. I have plenty of humanitarian projects planned, and I will also be working with the UN: to help sick children, for global warming, to combat deadly diseases…to fight against Aids. I want to, I must and I feel it».

Madonna arrives at charity events escorted by police and bodyguards, don’t you think it’s too much? «

With what she spends on that she could help an entire African village! I prefer to travel without being escorted! Others also do it: Robert de Niro, Jack Nicholson. They go around without any problems. Although it’s true that at times, you don’t feel safe but you also don’t attract any attention».

Are you ever scared? «

Yes, of couse, there are times that I have felt scared. But I think that there is always God to protect me».

Are you religious? «

I believe and pray, yes. It helps me. I respect every God». In the meantime, Stefano Gabbana intervenes, remembering the time when they arrived with their boat in Salina (a small Aeolian island off the coast of Italy) and Naomi wanted at all costs to go onto the island to pray in the tiny chapel of the town. And since she knew that she couldn’t enter without having her head covered, she took off her pareo and tied it around her head, remaining in her bikini. «Do you remember, Naomi the look on those parishioners’ faces?». «Oh. My God, yes».

Your biggest wish in the world right now? «

Now that I can have one, I would love to have a child».

Why, could you not have a child before? «

No. I had an operation recently and now I finally can». She radiates absolute joy as she says this.

And the father? «

I am ready to have a child even without a companion. I know that I am ready and that I would change for him. He would calm me down. For your child, you must not and cannot accept compromises but you must give all of yourself».

About a year ago, right here in Cannes, you talked for the first time about your anger and the journey you took to control it…«

Not a journey, but a real and proper cure. In a clinic. There they taught me many things. Which I try to put into practice. So, for example, in the mornings I avoid answering the phone, I pray and relax. I try to start my day without throwing myself straight into a frenetic rhythm».

You have not always managed to restrain yourself… (She tilts her head and sighs): «

That week of community service that I did did me good. I didn’t see it as a punishment. And I cannot say it was a negative experience. I became friends with the people I worked with and we often speak. That is how they live to survive. And that was a great lesson for me».

Nelson Mandela and Hugo Chavez? «

Mr. Mandela is like a grandfather for me, like part of the family. Chavez (she is very curt on the matter) , I only interviewed him. I don’t know him very well».

Of course, it has been one of your dreams to become a journalist… «

I love it. And I would love to interview Berlusconi. I was once introduced to him by Adriano Galliani…».

Silvio Berlusconi? «

I find him to be a great man, the only politician in Italy to have managed to complete his term in office, to be then defeated and discredited, only to return in power once more. I would have so many questions to ask him. And don’t misunderstand me, I also know that he has a gorgeous wife».

Neppure in barca, fra amici.

Lo so.

Io comunque preferisco viaggiare senza scorta! Altri lo fanno Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson. Se ne vanno in giro senza problemi. A volte, è vero, non ti senti protetta però neppure attiri l'attenzione».

Non ha mai paura Naomi Campbell? «

«Oh. My God, sì».

Inclina a testa, sospira: «

Nelson Mandela e Hugo Chavez? «

Adoro. E mi piacerebbe tanto intervistare Berlusconi. Me lo presentò un giorno Adriano Galliani...».

Silvio Berlusconi? «
