Why Was Mark Ruffalo's Brother Shot?

One week after a seemingly unprovoked shooting, the brother of actor Mark Ruffalo has died and two people have been arrested in connection with the case.

Scott Ruffalo, 39, died late Monday night at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to Beverly Hills Police Sgt. Renato Moreno.

Two people wanted for questioning about the shooting surrendered to police earlier Monday, according to the Associated Press. Shaha Mishaal Adham, 26, was arrested on an attempted murder warrant in connection with the shooting of Ruffalo.

Brian Scofield was being held on a misdemeanor traffic warrant. His role, if any, in the case wasn't immediately clear.

Jail records didn't indicate whether the pair have hired attorneys but showed that a court date for Adham had been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday.

Police last week identified Scofield and Adham as "persons of interest" in the shooting investigation. Scott Ruffalo was shot in the head Dec. 1 at his condo.

Mark Ruffalo, star of films "13 Going on 30," "Zodiac" and "You Can Count on Me," had been at his brother's bedside since the shooting, according to his publicist Jessica Kolstad.

In the wake of Scott Ruffalo's shooting, a portrait of the man emerged.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police released a woman arrested in the shooting death of actor Mark Ruffalo's brother, after she told investigators he shot himself playing with a gun, her attorney said on Wednesday.

Jail records confirmed that Shaha Mishaal Adham, 26, was released late on Tuesday night.

Her attorney, Ronald Richards, said Adham was at the Beverly Hills home of her friend, Scott Ruffalo, on December 1 to recover keys to a car she lent him. With her in the room, Ruffalo shot himself, Richards said.

"He plays with guns by pointing them at his head and saying words like 'Russian Roulette' or pop, and he accidentally shot himself," Richards said.

A representative from the Beverly Hills Police Department could not immediately be reached for comment.

Richards said a third individual was in the room when Ruffalo shot himself, but he would not say who that was.

Adham was in a state of shock and fled the scene of the shooting, on the advice of her boyfriend, Brian Scofield, 29, Richards said. Scofield was later named by police as a "person of interest" in the case, but was released soon after he and Adham turned themselves in to police on Monday.

Adham and Ruffalo, 39, a hairdresser, knew each other because she paid him "hundreds of dollars to blow-dry her hair," Richards said. Adham is the daughter of a wealthy Saudi businessman, he said.

"I do not believe she will face charges in this case, but the events of this case were so strange that I can never predict what's going to happen," Richards said.

Scott Ruffalo was taken off life support on Monday, and the following day Mark Ruffalo and his family released a statement that said they "deeply appreciate the outpouring of prayers and support" they had received.

Mark Ruffalo, 41, played a detective in the 2007 movie "Zodiac" and starred in the drama "All the King's Men" in 2006.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office on Wednesday ruled the death of Mark Ruffalo's younger brother a homicide.

The L.A. County Coroner's Office on Wednesday ruled the death of Mark Ruffalo's younger brother a homicide.

(Amy Graves/WireImage)Coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey says an autopsy determined that someone shot 39-year-old Scott M. Ruffalo in the head. He was found with a gunshot wound early Dec. 1 and died a week later at a hospital after being released from life support.

Beverly Hills police arrested Shaha Mishaal Adham, 26, before Ruffalo died on an attempted murder warrant. They later released her and she has not been charged.

Adham's attorney, Ronald Richards, who said after her release that Scott Ruffalo shot himself, disputed the coroner's determination Wednesday night.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. actor Mark Ruffalo, whose brother died this week, has dropped out of "Greenburg," a film written and to be directed by Noah Baumbach.

The Hollywood Reporter did not say why Ruffalo quit the project, however, the actor is in mourning after his brother Scott died Monday, reportedly of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after playing Russian roulette.

The entertainment industry trade newspaper said "Tropic Thunder" star Ben Stiller is set to replace Mark Ruffalo in "Greenburg," the plot of which is not being released to the press at this date.

"Doubt" and "Enchanted" actress Amy Adams, who was to co-star with Ruffalo, has also dropped out of the film and talks are being held with several other actresses to replace her, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Baumbach previously wrote and directed "The Squid and the Whale" and "Margot at the Wedding." He also co-wrote "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" with Wes Anderson and penned the script for Anderson's upcoming "The Fantastic Mr. Fox."

Ruffalo's film credits include "Reservation Road," "You Can Count on Me," "Zodiac," "13 Going on 30" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."
