It's not really a bad place, but an area in which you should be careful, or at least aware.

There's lots of restaurants, bars, etc. (and also 2 universities in Pio Nono street), so there's always lots of people circulating on that neighborhood. It's also rather touristic and since there's lots of bars and stuff, there's a lot of night life there as well, and all that attracts some undesirable people.

So standard for pretty much every big city. It just seems to be on San Fransisco (the Wharf) area levels of theft. I'll let one of the guys I know personally know to be more careful in the area. Also, when you leave the city, I didn't realize how much the terrain changes. I really love the area as a whole so far.

@Stormbringer - These mountain areas are basically identical to parts of the Sierra Mountain range in the Summer after a long period of having no rain or an extremely hot summer. It's also slightly Aussy looking in certain areas. I'm just so in love with Chile so far.

We've seen at least 10 people doing mountain biking here as well. It's very cool

Probably THE thing I love the most about Santiago is having the mountains right there, and even a couple big hills in the middle of the city, one of them particularly great for cycling.

I don't really do mountain biking but I do lots of road cycling and I love going into the mountains up to a few ski centers during the summer.

Chile's Central Zone, that is around Santiago and going south till Chillán or Los Angeles, is not all that different to California (at least Northern California) in terms of landscape and climate.

No idea, but if they were in Santiago, I would guess that this would be around Valparaíso, Viña Del Mar, Reñaca or somewhere around there.

I think is Valpariso, and it's lovely.

Also wtf is up with all the fires? The hotel staff in Santiago were saying the Jews were burning stuff down? The streaming group is now making the drive to Patagonia, and it's none stop fires every couple of miles it seems like.

Wildfire season over here and this Sumer it has been particularly catastrophic. It has truly been awful: a couple towns were almost leveled by the flames and 21 dead so far. Terrible, terrible situation...

I've seen some reports of some idiotic careless Israeli tourists in Patagonia (there was an awful fire over there because of that years ago), but these fires are in the central zone of the country. It'll have to be investigated the origin of the fires (there's so many) and I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of them were intentional, but it's not like there's Jews with torches or something going around... I'd say the people at the hotel were talking crap.
