April 25, 200718 yr Author ModelWatch Interview -Demystifying Conrad MatschkeModelWatch interviews today’s hottest male model from Berlin, Seed’s Management most sough-after and this runway season’s favorite!By the MW team, Jed, may and Karen, July 2005Frank and unassuming, incredibly handsome, honest, self-confident, intelligent and a good conversationalist, that’s Conrad Matschke for you! It’s been quite a while since we got a chance to talk to a male model that is not conscious of the fact, that he is a model! Discovered at the age of 17, Conrad Matschke has for his young age, already got an experience few of us, ordinary mortals, would ever taste. From Paris, London, New York, Berlin, he has seen it all, experienced it all, but it did not changed him- the glamour, the luxury, even the dark side of modeling. Conrad Matschke remains true to himself and his family- the very reason why they love him dearly. With a recent TV ad appearance for Prada shot by the famed director Ridley Scott, Conrad has been one of the busiest on all fronts. On the runways he has appeared recently for Prada, Miu Miu, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Y.S.L., Jil Sander, Sonja Rykiel, and Yoshi Yamamoto. He also did shoot for such magazines as L’Uomo Vogue, Arena Homme +, Numero and 10+ magazines. Everything about modeling is just a small fraction of Conrad's very own personal agenda, as he just completed his studies and aims for a taste of the serious side of life.ModelWatch is extremely thrilled to feature our latest interview, Seeds Managements’ Conrad Matschke!- - - - - Hi Conrad! It’s wonderful to have you at ModelWatch. Please, tell our viewers, how you become a model? How did it happen? I went to an after-show -party with a friend of mine and there was this photographer from Cologne, who asked to make some pictures. My friend does modeling as well so I was like “all right lets do it...why not!”... and what’s your first modeling experience? The first thing, they booked me for Emporio Armani campaign in Berlin. You can’t see me at all in the campaign! But it was a good sign for my booker to push me into modeling, I think...While this was going on, how did you feel?Well, it was kind of weird first because it was not my intention to be a MODEL! (Especially for a boy like me, you know (laughs)Was it easy or difficult for you to be convinced to become a model? They gave me 800 Euro for the first job so I was like: easy peasy japanaisy! And for sure traveling and all the fuckin’ crazy people in this industry makes it fun! But sometimes it sucks to be a MODEL...I feel so retarded...and some people treat you like you were a dumb head! The agency that is credited for discovering Conrad Matschke is no other than the prestigious German agency, Seeds Management. It was one of its owners, Pascal Kluttig, who has the reputation for being one of the best eyes in the business, who made the spot! Pascal, we are told, call his protege as "supayoungsta"! Most of his discoveries are from Berlin, reputable for having one of the most lively and street-wise fashionable citizens.Tell us about some of the modeling stints you have done that really made you feel good being a model, perhaps you could list down some of your favorite modeling assignments so far?I went to New York when I was seventeen for two weeks meeting some clients. I was so innocent at that time, but look at me now (laughs). It was really fun, and I had a joint with Wyclef Jean, which I will never forget...I traveled to Italy, London and Paris. Good life experiences I guess. It feels good to model, when you work for serious clients like Burberry, Prada, Gucci and Louis Vuitton, because they have really good food and take care of you, complete with massages and stuffs! How did you family and your friends reacted to your becoming a model? What did they say?Well, I just finished school like a month ago. I'm nineteen now. So I was modeling and schooling at the same time, which was strange sometimes because people think weird stuff about being a model...taking coke, being anorexic..they asked stupid questions! Some were jealous for sure, but my friends felt really happy for me. I never really wanted to talk about it in school and in general. I do not identify with being a model... My grandma is really proud! She shows pictures in the neighborhood and goes like "look that's Conrad, he is in Paris right now!" I love my grandmother!!! If given the choice between Milan, Paris, London, LA or New York, what fashion capital do you wish to be known as a top model?I don't really care about being famous or well known as a "top model". I just want to earn money as much as I can, save up for my future a bit and then study and get a serious job...but I would probably choose L.A. or New York...What do you wish viewers to know about your country and hometown? What makes a cool model like you proud of your country? I'm NOT German...I'M "OSSI"...I'M BERLINER. I'm proud living in Berlin, it’s a nice place to be!!! So much has happened there...its full of history... There were kings, the Nazis, Communists, great artists, awesome musicians, squatters, Turkish people, J.F.K., who came to declare that he is a fuckin dounut. Yeah its great you should come (smiles). But don’t bring too many fashion people, because I’m afraid that the rich, uptight society will come and destroy the street, punky, low budget style, which makes Berlin so significant to me.What have been your impressions about the agencies that represented you? In particular, tell us your experiences being managed by Seeds Model Management?I LOVE SEEDS !!! They are more friends than agents. The others are good too, just doing their job.Tell us what would be your dream modeling assignment. Your ideal location shoot, photographer, the models you wished you would do the shoot and the Designer/Fashion you will be modeling for?Shooting on Mars with Michael Jackson, Saddam Hussein and Ronald McDonald for "Kids Happy Meal" - campaign..! . By the way my grandmother is actually pretty good at taking photos. In terms of nudity, how far will you go for the sake of modeling? In case there is a prestigious designer that would require a model to have some nudity, for a new product that would create quite a stir in the fashion industry, will you be willing to accept such an assignment?I can’t tell now. I probably would not.In terms of preferences, do you like to do photoshoots for editorials and campaigns or do you enjoy doing the runways more? I prefer shootings, because you really work on the final result...trying to catch the right attitude, its kind of playing with your looks. They make you change your appearance, so you look completely different to what you usually look like. What are some of your impressions doing the catwalk? Any favorites?I have to say it’s actually a nice feeling going out presenting expensive clothes made by famous designers to a crowd of people. The atmosphere is electric (depending on the show). To be honest, it massages your ego a bit, makes you feel good afterwards. I don’t know why...its human nature isn't it ?What's the most difficult part being a model? What are the best parts?Difficult parts: Doing castings in Milan at 40 degrees in the shade, doing 10 castings a day all over the town. Its also hard sometimes not to loose your temper, especially when people treat you like a piece of meat rather than a person, not respecting your time and finally not even offering you a glass of water!Best parts: Traveling around and collecting vinyl’s fuck!I can roam all the major cities, watch and listen to some bizarre, unreal music scenes. For sure the girls and the parties! The comfort and sometimes luxuries the fashion industry offers you. If you were not a model, what would you be doing right now? I have a few interests besides modeling. I have been DJing for two years now, mainly electronic music, so I would probably be in Paris, London and New York checking out the music scenes and finding out what's going on in other cities. I just finished school, so modeling was something I have always done on the side...its not a passion I follow. I will enjoy life the next years with or without being a Model (ohhh, how I hate this word) Do you also to enter acting and become an actor? Is that an idea you have been contemplating sometimes or you are not interested? I thought about it, because my Mother is a singing-coach at an acting-academy in the north of Germany and she used to act in her youth. I respect actors and I’m sure its fun, and would be more satisfying than modeling. Tell us something about yourself and what are the things you really like. Could you tell us more about where you're born? What are some of your impressions of your birthplace and its people?I was born in Cottbus, East Germany on the 24th of March, 1986 at about 6 o'clock pm, just in time for dinner!Do you look more like your Dad or do you go after your Mom?After my Mum! ...Let me say hello by the way: "HELLO MOMMY, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH"What do you think are the features you have that attract other people the most? I don't know it’s hard to tell, let ask my friends --> They think I'm damn ugly! (laughs)Describe to us what fun to you is? Being with GOOD friends, being retarded, laughing, riding my bike, party in Berlin, strip clubs, answering questionnaires (laughing out loud) ...and last but not least spinning my decks to hell !!!!! What types of music do you enjoy? What books have you read lately and enjoyed reading? What are some sports you enjoy participating! ?Electronic music, Harry Potter in French, pole vault.Who are the people that influence you the most? Who are your personal heroes? My close friends for sure influence me the most. My only hero is Mr. Stephen Hawkins for what he has done for Astronomy and Physics. Are you a fashion conscious guy? Do you like to dress well or do you like rugged clothes- jeans and t-shirt? What are some of your favorite brands?I think one’s style develops over time from rugged to sophisticated, as one’s needs and requirements. I'm mostly wearing street wear...but it depends on the situation or events, sure I have white shirts, a tie and black jackets in my closet. I enjoy to dress up sometimes for parties and girls smiles). We wish to ask you a series of questions, you can answer, laugh at or completely ignore! Can you quote a song that truly means something to you? Codec & Flexor: "time has changed" Do you think that the body rules the mind or does the mind rule the body! ? The mind rules everything and your body is the temple. Tell us something that you believe to be true. That I will die one day... What are the initials of the worst person you've come across in your life? J.L. What do you think are the most important rules of fashion etiquette? ...I don’t care!!!!! Are you a good liar?Yes, sometimes...ask my mom!!!! What book do you read most often? Karl Marx’s "The Communist Manifesto".Do you have an ideal woman? What should be her qualities and features to make her attractive to you?As long as she is funny and makes me feel good, the rest doesn't matter. What are your future plans- both on personal and professional levels? The future is so unpredictable...I don't know...music, traveling and education in the next few years. What would bring a smile to your face? What would make you happy?Do you really want to know? (laughing out loud)
