  7. Interview for playboy Playboy.com: You debuted recently on Lost, which is a massive pop culture phenomenon. Do you think it will change your life professionally? Monica Dean: Everybody says so, though I can't really see it yet. I think things will change for me, because I see the expressions of people I'm auditioning for since I appeared on Lost. Playboy.com: Because you're mysterious and beautiful and speak with an accent, does that classify you as "exotic"? Dean: I know I'm swimming in a different pool. I don't know if it's an exotic one, it's just a different one. I don't know how I'm perceived. I never see myself through my accent or my nationality. Playboy.com: Why do you think Lost's producers cast you? Dean: After my first audition, the casting director said, "You're the first person who understands the character." I auditioned for it four times. There were four women for the final audition; of course everybody thinks they're better than the other, better looking, more talented, more right for the part. Apparently I was the lucky one. Playboy.com: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is the one thing you could not do without? Dean: I think it's a man. We would be Adam and Eve, and recreate civilization. Playboy.com: Europeans are notorious flirts and sexual provocateurs. How would you rate your skills there? Dean: I wouldn't be able to assess myself in this area. You'd have to ask a "victim." Playboy.com: You declined to pursue your career as a lawyer. Is law less sexy than acting? Dean: It was not about sexy. It was just a choice. I think there are no sexy professions. If you are sexy, you could work in a post office. Playboy.com: How did you become a famous talk show personality in Bucharest? Dean: That's a mystery to me. I think because I had this very twisted upbringing and I had so many events happen in my life, that I didn't have a fear of taking risks. I think young girls probably identified with me. Playboy.com: What drove you to take the plunge from being an established Romanian television personality to a Hollywood ingenue? Dean: A taste for risk, or the desire to swim in a bigger ocean. I'm a big fan of new experiences, environments, encounters, adapting to new cities and to new rules. I never thought I'd spend so much time in Hollywood. I came here originally to take some acting classes. I liked it, and then I got into movies. I just stayed. Playboy.com: As an Eastern European émigré living in Los Angeles, has it been difficult assimilating? Dean: I had to even up so many differences, starting with the way I was dressing. In Europe, I was wearing high heels. Here, everybody's laid back. If you're wearing heels, you're screaming "foreigner!" I realized the jokes are different. People weren't laughing at my jokes, and I wasn't laughing at theirs. I had to watch television to get this culture, to understand the jokes. Playboy.com: Your Romanian movie The Death of Mr. Lazarescu is driven by a very particular brand of black, Eastern European, pessimistic humor. What did you take from that experience? Dean: That working in a hospital is not a job for me. It was very difficult. I saw the worst. I realized how close to death we are. We were shooting in a doctor's office, and he got a call: "A patient is coming." Five minutes later, he got another call saying, "Never mind, he's gone." That was it. That was the life of a man. We underestimate our luck, we underestimate what our gift is, just to live, to breathe. Playboy.com: It seems as though so many hot new actresses, models, tennis players, are from the former Soviet bloc. This might be the greatest consequence of the end of the Cold War. Dean: I'd agree. We grew up in an era full of restrictions, and that made us in a different way. We had closed borders. That's why we are here in these tremendous numbers. The freedom we have after the fall of Communism, I thought it would mean we'd turn to another extreme, but I think we still have that healthy balance in terms of our attitudes toward sex. Playboy.com: What is your particular attitude toward sex? Dean: For me, the most interesting is the meshing, the chemistry, that is borne between a woman and a man. I became an actress because of the bending up of that chemistry. The whole game we play. It's all a game. It's a dance, and I love it. Playboy.com: Would you ever do a nude scene? Dean: I'd like to think that I don't have discomfort with my body and that I wouldn't have a real problem getting naked in front of the camera. The nudity has to be absolutely necessary in the scene, perfectly justified in the story and tastefully done. I recently refused to do two projects that involved nudity for not fulfilling all three conditions, even though one of the stories was tempting. I'd have to save all the passion I'd put in a love scene for the right project, almost in the same way a woman saves all the passion and the power she has as a woman to give it to the right man.
