Cannavaro: Italy Should Take Spain's Lead Fabio Cannavaro wishes that Italian stadiums could be more like they are in Spain where the ultras are controlled and families and children go to games. The Real Madrid defender is upset at the current saga blighting the game in his homeland and hopes that the situation will calm down soon. In the Bernabéu, Cannavaro is delighted that people feel safe to bring their loved ones and believes that Italy could take a leaf out of la Primera's book. "It is at times like these when I think I am fortunate to be playing outside of Italy," he said. "We are giving ourselves a bad image of our football and our country. "The Real Madrid stadium is full of women and children and with families and the ultras are very well controlled." Cannavaro is also hopeful that the clubs, fans and authorities can use the forthcoming break in the league to sort everything out and restore some normality. "I hope the break for internationals can help restore calm over there and help to reorganise things," he continued. "It would be too much to stop the Italian team from playing though."

Tottenham Target Casillas As Silly Season Returns Juande Ramos is hoping to persuade the Tottenham board to spend €40m in order to prise Iker Casillas away from Real Madrid, according to an outlandish report in EL Mundo. At the head of that list is Casillas and El Mundo have used an old quote from the Spanish national team keeper, where he claims to fancy playing in England, to back up their story. In other interviews, the Madrid custodian has stated that he wants to stay at the Bernabéu for his entire career and even a mega offer is unlikely to see los Merengues tempted to let him go. According to the report, Ramos believes that bringing in a world class keeper like Chelsea did with Petr Cech and Juve did with Gianluigi Buffon, is the key to building a successful side. It appears to the spending power of Premiership clubs that has led the reporters to believe that Spurs will break the bank to land their man as they cite Sunderland's €12m purchase of Craig Gordon as an example of the cash available in England. As if signing Casillas was not enough, El Mundo then round off by linking Tottenham to a move for Barça midfielder Xavi Hernández and Valencia striker David Villa. While the English press have been stating that Spurs are after more modest prey, the Spanish media believe that Ramos is going to go for the big guns in his attempt to lift the club into the Champions League.

Bumper new Real Madrid deal for Ramos Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon is ready to hand defender Sergio Ramos a mega bucks new contract - which will include a clause that makes him an official member of the leadership group. Cope says Ramos, who has complained about his current deal, will be offered a pay-hike of £3.5 million-a-year and also a place among the club's leaders, which also include Raul, Iker Casillas, Guti and Michel Salgado. It's suggested that Ramos' promotion will see Salgado lose his leadership title. Calderon is moving to secure Ramos in the wake of interest from AC Milan, which was made public last week.
