What is your perfect vacation destination? Where is the most rejuvenating, energizing place you have been? "For me, there is nothing better than disconnecting completely on a sailing boat, with no land in sight. Ireland has also become somewhere I particularly love, as soon as I have a few days off, I try to escape there. With its wild landscapes and sharp rocks disappearing into the sea, the country has the most beautiful, most natural beaches in the world."
Do you plan vacations a long way ahead, or are you more of a last-minute girl?
"It's always at the last minute. I still haven't decided where I'm going this summer, we'll see. I tend to book my flight just before I go and go with the flow once I get there."
Do you see vacations as a chance to get fit, or a time for relaxation?
"I go sailing whenever I get the chance when I take a long break and it's actually very physical. I love sleeping and relaxing at home as well though! I make the most of catching up on lost sleep during the year and take time especially to read. I've just finished The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and before that I couldn't put down The Goddesses by Joseph Campbell."
How do you feel when you're out on the water, sailing?
"It's the greatest feeling of liberty that I have ever known. At the same time, there's a feeling of insecurity when the sea gets up and we have a hard time controlling the boat, it puts us back in our place. Because when you're on the ocean, everything that happens around you is so much bigger. You have to stay in the moment, listen to the boat, to the sea, to the wind, and forget about the rest. It's a form of meditation, when you think about it."
Do you use sun protection when you're out sailing? What is your relationship with the sun?
"I never used to bother too much with sun protection, but after a certain age you have to. Whenever the sun is out now, I use Lait-en-Brume Soleil Bronzer SPF30 all over, it leaves my skin really soft. And if I do catch a little too much, I slather on plenty of Biafine moisturizer before bed."
Do you have a summer haircare routine?
"I am crazy about hair oils, I must use liters of it with my dry hair! I normally leave it on overnight, but on vacation I end up applying it every five minutes. I usually go for organic Moroccan argan oil, butDr. Hauschka's is also great (Neem hair oil by Dr. Hauschka)."
How do you de-stress in the city when you're missing the great outdoors?
"I practice yoga every day and meditate. As soon as I feel things are too much, I take time out somewhere quiet and isolated, like a museum. I haven't had time to look round since I arrived in Paris, I absolutely must... are there any good exhibitions on at the moment? "
Do you like to cook?
"I love to cook! It's probably what I do the most, it's so simple - when I'm in Ireland, it's all I do! I was vegan for a very long time, so I'm more comfortable with vegetables. I like to do them Indian-style, I put curry into everything, it's my favorite spice. I'll pass on Irish lamb stew - even though I have made one, I couldn't even taste it. I also love collecting seaweed on the rocks, I dry it in the sun and add it to salad, or bottle it to take back to New York. I also make my own fermented drink for when I need an energy boost and I've just started making chocolate fondant cake, I learnt the recipe in secret as a surprise for my boyfriend on his birthday, he loved it!"
Do you eat differently in the summer? Do you have a favorite recipe?
"Whatever the season, I love soups. We have a vegetable garden in Ireland, with spinach, leeks, potatoes, peas and lots of herbs. I'm disappointed that we didn't get any fennel this year, last year it was superb. My fiancé looks after the garden and I cook - isn't that a good compromise? There's one recipe that I do quite a lot at home, from an Irish cookbook of seaweed recipes. It's an easy way to update the classic brownie: just mix a few sheets of rehydrated nori in when you add the dark chocolate."
What's in your beach bag? Which beauty products can't you do without?
"I honestly don't take that much to the beach. A bikini, my books, suncream... maybe a hairbrush, but only maybe. I'm quite low-maintenance on holiday, but I always have Hypnôse mascara, Rénergie Eclat Multi-Lift tinted moisturizer and my Star Bronzer Golden Riviera by Lancôme in my washbag."
Which fragrances remind you of travel?
"I have been wearing Hypnôse for so long, it brings back so many memories. I've given bottles to members of my family, so each time I recognize those oriental and woody notes on someone, it takes me back to fun, family times."
