Kate revealed to play Lady Godiva- 20/05/06 Kate Moss's past misdemeanours appear to have aided, not hindered, the acquisition of lucrative new modelling contracts - and now I hear talk of another career spin-off. La Moss, I am told, is to play Lady Godiva in a film about the British heroine. "The producers always had Moss in mind for the role," says my Cannes mole, "but until she agreed to do it, they were having trouble financing the film. Now, it looks like the project is going ahead and will start filming in the UK later this year." This might indeed be the perfect role for the model: the wife of Leofric, the Earl of Mercia, Lady Godiva is feisty, rebellious and, more important, takes her clothes off. In 1057, she is said to have argued with her husband over the taxes he had levied on the growing city of Coventry, whereupon he challenged her to ride naked through the marketplace, promising to ease the tax burden if she did so. Lady Godiva took the challenge and became a local legend. "Kate has already made several guest appearances on TV shows, so it's quite clear she can act," says my source. "And with a name like hers on the billing, how could the project fail?" Naked rivalry of Godivas - 27/05/06 It's an unfortunate fact that film-makers occasionally chance on the same subject simultaneously. Three years ago, Oliver Stone and Baz Luhrmann both decided to direct Alexander the Great biopics, and Luhrmann's project was subsequently shelved. Now, the rivalry is set to be repeated over Lady Godiva. Last week I revealed that Kate Moss was to play Lady Godiva in a British film directed by Vicky Jewson about the horseback heroine, set to be released in December. Now I hear that another British director, Baz Taylor, plans to pip Jewson to the post by releasing his film, Lady Godiva: Back in the Saddle in September. "I actually found out about the other film last year," Jewson tells me. "I was trying to get financing for Lady Godiva in Cannes when I bumped into a group of people with 'Lady Godiva' baseball caps. It was my worst nightmare come true, but then I found out a little more about the film and now I'm not so worried." Taylor, on the other hand, may well be: instead of having the most famous model in the world playing the lead, he has former Steps singer Faye Tozer. "We're due to start filming in three weeks," adds Jewson, "but we're happy to work around Kate, as she's so perfect for the role. After all, Lady Godiva's tale is all about one woman's triumph over adversity."
