  1. Mourinho: "Cristiano is a tremendous professional and he scored one of the best goals of his collection" Realmadrid.com Jose Mourinho had nothing but kind words for his team following the 1-3 victory at Zaragoza. "We played a great match, although out opponent had the mental strength to answer back after trailing." "Whether you play with cats dogs, it's the tactics that matter, not the players. The dog is the usual system with two forwards and that has made us strong and aggressive. The cat is an alternate system with three central midfielders. I thought people were smarter and knew what I was talking about." "The fact that Marcelo and Alonso were booked and will have to sit out the next match is something that happens in football. It is very easy to book Real Madrid players and not so easy with others. We have several injured players and these two are now suspended. Khedira will return. This is something normal to deal with, especially at the end of the year." "The fact that players at other clubs can protests and we can't bothers me. The same goes for coaches who can step out of the coaching area while others can't. If you watch games on television and see that others are teams are not booked, well it happens." "Cristiano Ronaldo is a phenomenal player difficult to understand because La Liga has many talented player. When such a talent like he is is treated badly, it leads me to believe that he is not protected enough. He belongs to La Liga and to Spanish fans who watch him on television or in the stands. I don't even protect him. He always plays. He puts on a show in every stadium he visits. Cristiano is a tremendous professional and he scored one of the best goals of his collection." "People might think that we will drop points against Sevilla because we have so many players out, but we shall see. We will put eleven players on the pitch and the crowd will support them. We want to head into the Christmas break with a win. We must be strong heading into these last two matches. We also hope Kaka returns as of January."
  2. Real Zaragoza 1-3 Real Madrid Real Madrid continued their post-Nou Camp recovery with a deserved 3-1 victory over rock-bottom Real Zaragoza. Mesut Ozil`s early strike and a brilliant Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick put Madrid 2-0 up at half-time and Angel Di Maria lobbed home a third goal just after the break, making Gabi`s 54th-minute penalty for Zaragoza nothing more than a consolation. The triumph means Madrid have now rattled up three successive victories since losing 5-0 to Barcelona at the Nou Camp a fortnight ago, beating Valencia, Auxerre and now Zaragoza. Madrid, for whom Jose Mourinho was back on the bench after missing the 4-0 Champions League win over Auxerre due to a touchline ban, survived an early let-off when Angel Lafita slid a low shot just wide of Iker Casillas` far post. However, the visitors put themselves in charge in the 15th minute when Ozil stroked in their first. A superb pass from Marcelo picked out Ozil on the right and the German international progressed into the area before sliding a shot through Leo Franco`s legs. Karim Benzema, who netted a hat-trick against Auxerre, almost made it 2-0 soon after but he found himself crowded out by the Zaragoza defence, but there was nothing the hosts could do as Ronaldo did double Madrid`s advantage in the 44th minute. Having been awarded a free-kick 25 yards out in the centre of the pitch, Ronaldo stepped up and thumped an unstoppable shot into Leo Franco`s top right-hand corner with the former Atletico Madrid custodian rooted to the spot. That was Ronaldo`s 17th league goal of the season, leaving him two ahead of Lionel Messi at the top of the Primera Division scoring charts - although Messi will get the chance to reduce that gap when Barca play Real Sociedad later this evening. Ronaldo`s strike was the perfect way for Madrid to end the first half, and they enjoyed a similarly successful start to the second period as well with Di Maria putting them 3-0 up in the 47th minute. The livewire Argentinian, who has been a fine asset for Madrid since his summer move from Benfica, raced onto Xabi Alonso`s through-ball and lobbed his shot over the outcoming Leo Franco and into the net. Zaragoza gave themselves a glimmer of hope when they pulled a goal back from the spot, Gabi sending Casillas the wrong way after Ricardo Carvalho had brought down Nicolas Bertolo, but they rarely threatened a second goal in the remainder of the match. Indeed, it was only Madrid who looked like adding to the scoreline and Benzema was denied by Leo Franco following a rapid breakaway that left three visiting forwards against one Zaragoza defender. Lassana Diarra then came close to adding a fourth in the 80th minute but, after powering his way to the edge of the area and playing a good one-two with Di Maria, he saw his shot saved at the second attempt by Leo Franco. 3. Álvaro Arbeloa, Sergio Ramos and Gonzalo Higuaín aren’t going to be the only ones coming soon to a theater near you (in Torrente IV)! Iker Casillas has participated in the filming of a comedy directed by David Marqués entitled En fuera de juego. The film stars Fernando Tejero, who became famous for his role as a portero in the TV series Aquí no hay quien viva, although he was a “portero” of a different kind (“portero” means both goalkeeper and doorman). En fuera de juego is due out in spring 2011.

In an interview with Radio Marca, Marcelo said the following: - Mou said he’s in love with me, and I am also in love with him (laughs). - I spoke a lot with Pepe [during the Valencia game]. After that incident he had with Getafe, a lot of players try to provoke him during the 90 minutes (to make him react) with elbows, kicks, etc. Everyone can see that Pepe keeps a cool head and does not get provoked. He’s like a brother to me, he’s the one that takes care of me the most in Real Madrid. - We have Iker Casillas as a captain, but Sergio Ramos also talks a lot. Xabi and Cristiano are also captains although they don’t wear the armband.
  7. A reason to feel optimistic: surgery has been ruled out for Pipita’s herniated disc. He’ll go instead with the “conservative option” of medical treatment and kinesiology sessions. The first epidural yesterday worked, and lessened the amount of pain and inflammation. Gonzalo could be back in action around one month’s time, depending on how well he responds to the treatment. This also means that he won’t be traveling to Argentina to get a third opinion (the first was from doctors at Sanitas, and the second from Dr. Cáceres). Gonzalo worked out yesterday in the pool at Valdebebas. Here’s to a speedy recovery, Pipita!

Ferguson: BPL standards are soaring Sir Alex Ferguson insists the quality of the Premier League is still getting better. One win from five for Chelsea, too many draws for Manchester United and three home defeats already at Arsenal have led to a far more open top flight this term - and a widespread conclusion that standards have fallen. Ferguson's immediate task is to find a way for his United to beat Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday. However, with Arsenal and Chelsea his side's next two league opponents, domestic matters clearly occupy a significant place in his thoughts. And, rather than agree his own side are among a group of underperforming title contenders, Ferguson is adamant the league is getting stronger. "It is a strange Premier League this season," he said. ""We have to give credit to the lower parts of the league who are now catching up and condensing it into a much tighter competition. "The table is like we are used to seeing in the Championship every year where you win two games and you are challenging for the play-off spots. "Only a few weeks ago Sunderland were down the bottom. Now they are challenging for a European place. "That is the kind of league we are in at the moment. "It is difficult to assess whether it is the teams at the top who are failing or the one below them getting better. "I think it is the lower teams getting better because the standard has improved." The immediate priority though is avoiding a defeat on Tuesday. In addition to potentially allowing United to become the first team to go through an entire group phase programme without conceding a goal, anything other than a loss would confirm top spot in Group C. And that would allow United to side-step Real Madrid and Madrid's five-goal conquerors Barcelona in next week's knock-out phase draw. "If you get Barcelona on one of their good days they can do that to anyone," said Ferguson. "It was a marvellous performance but even before the Champions League started they would have been one of the favourites. "Like everyone else, they have days when they can be beaten but the sensible approach is to avoid the bigger hitters and we can only do that if we do finish first in our group."

"Real and Barca better than United" Valencia coach Unai Emery does not believe Manchester United are quite at the same level as Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. Emery takes his side to Old Trafford on Tuesday looking for a win that would not only mean the United defence had been breached for the first time in this season's Champions League but would allow Valencia to leapfrog their opponents to claim top spot in Group C. Yet, even if they fail in that quest, Emery does not feel Valencia will be meeting the side who should be regarded as favourites to conquer Europe at Wembley next May. "Real and Barcelona are the best two club sides in the world," he said. "Manchester United are almost level with them but I think they are just behind." As Valencia cannot be paired with Real, who defeated them at the weekend, or Barca in the first knockout round, it could be argued United have the greater incentive to achieve a positive result. Emery is not so sure. With David Silva sent to attend the game and cheer on the club he joined as a 14-year-old and spent a decade with before joining Manchester City for £24million last summer, Emery feels Valencia have a wider motive. "At the start of the Champions League we had two aims," he revealed. "First, we wanted to qualify, which we have achieved. Secondly, we wanted to win the group. "There are many reasons for doing that. For us it is not about wanting to avoid certain opponents. "We want to show to the rest of Europe that we can produce a top performance at a big club. "There are so many good teams in this competition. We want to get a result that will make other teams take notice of us and stand us in good stead for the remainder of the tournament." Goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez had been a doubt with a calf injury. However, Sanchez has travelled, which Emery views as a major positive and the former Tottenham man should start.

  20. UEFA reduce Madrid punishments UEFA have reduced some of the sanctions handed out to Real Madrid relating to the red cards of Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos against Ajax. They softened their stance on the Spanish side following an appeal by Madrid. Madrid were last week found guilty of improper conduct after Alonso and Ramos seemed to deliberately incur second bookings for time-wasting late on in the 4-0 win over Ajax in Amsterdam a fortnight ago. Those dismissals would therefore wipe out previous cautions ahead of the Champions League knockout stage, with the players only missing this week's clash with Auxerre, which is a dead rubber for already-qualified Madrid. The nine-times European champions appealed against the initial ruling, which saw coach Jose Mourinho and players Alonso, Ramos, Iker Casillas and Jerzy Dudek receive varying penalties, and UEFA today announced reductions for some of the initial sanctions. A UEFA announcement read: "Real Madrid are now fined 100,000 euros instead of 120,000. "Coach Jose Mourinho is now fined 30,000 euros instead of 40,000 euros. "Jose Mourinho is now suspended for one match - Wednesday's Group G fixture between Madrid and Auxerre - instead of the initial suspension of one game with a second game deferred for a probationary period of three years. "The fines handed down by the UEFA control and disciplinary body to the Madrid players Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos (20,000 euros each), Iker Casillas (10,000 euros) and Jerzy Dudek (5,000 euros) remain the same. "The one-match suspensions handed down to Alonso and Ramos also stand."
  21. Wesley Sneijder on his years at Madrid by unamadridista AS published an interesting interview with Wesley Sneijder the other day, the first where he talks about his departure from Madrid. He said some noteworthy things, so here are the parts where he talked about Madrid and Mourinho. Q: You were in top form in your first year with Inter. How did you adapt to the rigidity of the Calcio? A: It was mental. My first year in Madrid was very good, the second not so much because I had personal problems. When I left, I felt that I hadn’t accomplished anything. I wanted more. I felt bad for the fans, for the press, for my teammates. When I went to Inter, I couldn’t stop thinking, “it was a horrible year, but I don’t want to continue like that. I want to show the whole world what I’m capable of.” Q: It was a question of mentality? A: Mourinho also gave me confidence. I arrived on a Thursday and on Saturday, in the derby, he started me and we won 4-0. Q: What does Mourinho do that makes him such a special person? A: Something psychological. He knows perfectly how a player feels. I told him things and he knew how I thought. The dialogue was very direct. Sometimes, he would tell me, “you need three days rest, stay at home.” Q: What was your departure from Real Madrid like? A: ¡Una locura! The most difficult moment was when they made me train on another field, apart from everyone else. I felt like I was in jail. But I accepted it and I left, although with pain. But that pain doesn’t exist anymore. Inter has helped me to forget… Q: Who let you down the most? A: I got along very well with Pellegrini. I think he wanted me to stay. The problem was with Valdano and Pérez, more with Valdano. But life is like that. Q: What is your opinion of Valdano? A: Nothing, nothing. If I see him, I’ll greet him without any problems. It’s alright because life is like that, you come and go. But the way that everything happened… Q: Why did your performance decline so much in the second year? A: To begin with, I was injured for three months. Then I had problems with my ex-wife. She wouldn’t let me see my son, and it was all very complicated. No one in the club reached out to me. Q: Did it bother you that they said you went out a lot at night? A: No, because it was the truth. I did got out a lot, I know. And then came a moment at the end of the year when I got up one morning and I thought, “Wesley, what are you doing? You have quality, you’re in the best club in the world, what are you doing!” And so, all that ended. Q: Were you still in Madrid then? A: Yes, yes. During the last three weeks, I returned to my best level. Q: How did you find yourself in this downward spiral? A: I’m not going to lie. I was almost always out partying… when you’re alone at home and you have so many ugly things to think about, you need to escape. What could I do? Later on, the woman who’s now my wife helped me a lot. We talked a lot… Q: Did you think about returning to Madrid when they signed Mourinho? A: No, because I didn’t want to… It was very complicated although I still feel something for the club, but with the people in charge… Q: You don’t want anything to do with Florentino and Valdano? A: Nothing! [Jajaja, go Wesley!]
  22. Higuain to return in four weeks Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has been boosted by news that striker Gonzalo Higuain could be back as soon as next month. The Argentinean hitman, Madrid's top scorer for the past two seasons, was diagnosed with a herniated disc and has started a special treatment on Monday. He was initially ruled out for at least two months but according to Spanish publication Marca, the 22-year-old could be back in full fitness in four weeks - if everything goes according to plan. The news would come as a major boost for Mourinho, who is currently short of striking options as he continues to rely on Cristiano Ronaldo for the supply of goals. Higuain is currently his side's second highest top-scorer behind Ronaldo with 10 goals in all competition. Madrid's next match sees them take on French side Auxerre in Group G of the Champions League.
