Ronaldo: I want to be the greatest The Ballon d’Or will no longer do for Real Madrid’s mercurial forward Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo, who surrendered his 2008 Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year to Lionel Messi in 2009, now wants more than his crown back - he wants to be the greatest player in history. The Portugese Peacock has firmly set his sight on becoming the best there ever was on the planet. Marca quoted the Madrid player as saying, "I'm going to win the Ballon d'Or back, this year or next. "I have an ambition to become the best player in history." The damaged ankle that has kept him sidelined for two months is also in good shape and will not require surgery according to the pacey forward. "The ankle is fine and if not the Real Madrid doctors will see it right. I am sure I will not need an operation," he concluded.

Deposed Ronaldo aims to reclaim crown Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi make no secret of their desire to be recognised as the greatest player of their generation, so Real Madrid's £80m man will have taken little satisfaction in seeing his fierce rival from Barcelona take the honours at the FIFA World Player of the Year gala on Monday night. Twelve months ago, it was Ronaldo being crowned as the game's king after he inspired Manchester United to Champions League glory in Moscow in 2008, yet Messi trumped his nemesis by completing a trophy clean sweep this year and now the stage is set for this brilliant duo to settle their score. In truth, Ronaldo may well have been a step ahead of Messi in the second half of 2009 as he has scored a stunning 13 goals in his first 12 games for Real Madrid and yet he was gracious as he handed over the baton of greatness to Messi at the FIFA gala this week. However, the Portuguese glamour boy is hoping the game's top personal prize is only in the hands of his rival on a temporary basis as with this season's Champions League finale taking place at Real Madrid's Bernabeu home, he is determined to secure his ticket to the biggest show in European football and expects to meet his old foe at the main gate. "The Champions League finishes in Madrid this time, so it would be wrong if we are not there and let's see if Barcelona can attend the party," says a bullish Ronaldo. "They are the holders of the trophy and will expect to be in the final again so why not Real v Barca. I believe that by the time we reach the end of this season, Real Madrid will be very strong because we have come together in the space of a few months and already we have shown we are very close to Barcelona. "They play some amazing football, but only the reason they are a little step ahead of us at the moment is they have been together for so long and are already a great team. That's where we want to be at Real Madrid and I know it will happen. "I look at Manchester United, Chelsea and maybe Inter Milan as teams that could be in the Champions League final, but a lot of people will be hoping for Real Madrid against Barcelona. It would be amazing." Ronaldo is polite as he acknowledges his respect for Messi after the Argentine's dream year was capped with a winning goal in the World Club Cup final last week, but he is already stating his intention to reclaim the title as the best in the game his time next year. "Messi is a worthy winner this time because he won the Champions League as well as the Spanish title in 2009," concedes Ronaldo. "When I won everything with Manchester United a year ago, people said I deserved the FIFA prize, so now it's Messi's turn. "I have no problem in saying he is a great player and it's natural that people try and build up a rivalry between us. The truth is I don't know him so well and it is hard to say what I feel about him as a person. All I know is he is a great footballer and he should be recognised as this. When we reach the end of 2010, hopefully I can be the one with all the prizes from this season and maybe I will have the FIFA title again." With all five players in the running for this season's World Player of the Year award on the wage bill at either Real Madrid or Barcelona, there is little question that Spain's top two clubs have become the home to the most feared footballers in the European game and Ronaldo is convinced Real's rapidly assembled new side can emerge as major contenders in the second half of the campaign. Any notion that his world record £80 million price tag would weigh down this sporting icon has been dispelled, with the leading scorer in this season's Champions League insisting he is relishing his new life away from the wind, rain and snow of what has been a freezing Manchester winter so far. "Real Madrid has been as magical as I expect it to be and it has helped that the team we have has developed so quickly," adds Ronaldo. "I don't know if we can finish growing in time to win the big trophies this season, but it has to be the aim. "As for my memories of Manchester, I have nothing but good things to say about the club and my amazing manager, Alex Ferguson. I can tell you now that I will never play for any other English club, which shows how much United will always mean to me. Going back to Old Trafford to play against them would not be easy, but I know it will probably happen one day. Still, this is for the future. "There are some things about England that I have missed and the food is certainly one. I also love English music, though that can travel with me and I miss some of my friends at United. "What I don't miss is the way players who like to perform for the pleasure of the fans are treated by English referees. I got kicked every weekend and some players were sent out just to try and stop me by hitting me as hard as possible. "In Spain, attacking players are given more protection by the officials, but one thing that has surprised me is the attitude of the supporters in Madrid. They are not very understanding and one bad result seems to be treated as a disaster. The supporters at the Bernabeu expect the team to win every game and our job is to make their dreams come true." If Ronaldo is playing the Champions League final on home turf next May, Real Madrid's journey back to the pinnacle of the game would be all but complete and few would be surprised if Messi and Barcelona are lying in wait to try and thwart their coronation.

  10. I want to be part of this project; I feel important and I will make good use of the chances I get'' Raul talked to the media after the match against Zurich. The captain analysed the victory and talked about his personal situation on the team. "It wasn't a great game, but we nonetheless earned a very important victory. We've taken a step towards the Last 16 and we will have to take three points in Marseille." "People should have faith in the team. We currently hold a privileged position and, despite having to improve, we are part of a new project. People should be patient. We want the fans to have fun. Every new player on the team is a great professional. We just need to be more confident." "Tonight's victory will help us gain confidence and improve. This is a great project and the team is doing a good job, but we find it hard to win a game. We grow anxious because we want to do well; this prevents us from finishing the games as we would really like them to end." "People should be demanding, but I don't believe we are playing so badly. We are scoring goals and conceding very few." "Three very important points and the hopes of many Madridistas will be at stake in Barcelona. Barça will host the match and it will be a good chance for us to showcase our full potential. We want the match to be a turning point for us this season." "I feel important. I've talked to the coach and he's told me he wants all of us to be important. This is a great and hungry squad. We are leaders and we'll continue to fight hard. I have to make good use of the chances I get." "I feel people's support and respect. I want to help out in this great project. I knew what my role was going to be like; that I was going to spend more time on the bench. I've nevertheless been a starter in several games. The team as a whole is what really matters." "I'm going to see my contract through. I have no problems to accept my role. I will not look for a way out because I am happy with this project and I want to be a part of it."
  11. Real Madrid-FC Zurich Player Ratings Cristiano Ronaldo made his comeback from injury as a substitute but it was Gonzalo Higuain who hogged the headlines again. By Eugene YS Han Real Madrid Iker Casillas: 6 Hardly had any real work to do although that pesky Alphonse kept raining shots at him from distance. Sergio Ramos: 7 Zurich struggled to keep tabs on him whenever he overlaps Alvaro Arbeloa: 5 Looked out of sorts at left-back and often found wanting when required to attack. Raul Albiol: 6 Steady if unspectacular display at the back. Pepe: 6 Struggled to impose himself in defence. Probably because he had to adapt to another defensive partner. Marcelo: 7 Had a great chance off a corner in the first-half but his screamer of a shot hit the post. Deserved a goal for his efforts. Xabi Alonso: 7 Showed great vision and distribution and picked out Marcelo and Ramos numerous times. L. Diarra: 6 Too similar to Alonso to make any impact. Kaka: 7 The Brazilian created the all-important goal for Higuain and was influential in the middle of the park for Real. He looks a different class whenever he is on the ball. MAN-OF-THE-MATCH Gonzalo Higuain: 8 Higuain just can't stop scoring. The Argentine is the most in-form player in the Real team and scored the winning goal. He also kept the Zurich defence busy by closing them down. Should be a shoo-in for the El Clasico match against Barcelona on Sunday. Raul: 5 Looked off the pace and slowed Real's attack down whenever he got the ball. Rightly substituted Subs: Rafael van der Vaart: 6 Had a chance to extend Real's lead in the dying minutes of the game but skied the ball. Could have laid it off to an unmarked Higuain. Cristiano Ronaldo: 6 Also had a half chance when he went clear on the left but his shot was saved. Esteban Granero: NA

Ronaldo glad to be back for Real Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo sent out a warning to Barcelona ahead of 'El Clasico' after making his return to competitive action. Ronaldo returned from injury with 20 minutes remaining as Real secured their place in the Champions League last 16 with a 1-0 defeat of FC Zurich tonight. The world's most expensive player - having moved to the Bernabeu from Manchester United in an £80million deal last summer - had been missing for Madrid since September 30 with an ankle injury. "It's good to be back, 55 days after my injury," Ronaldo told Sky Sports 2. "It was very disappointing, but this is football. "My motivation is high and I want to be back again and as strong as I was before." Ronaldo was absent for Madrid's last 10 competitive fixtures having made a sensational start to his career in Spain. The 24-year-old Portugal international scored nine times as Real won each of their opening seven matches, but since his absence, they have won only five of 10 - although four of those wins have come in the last five fixtures. Ronaldo, however, is confident ahead of his first meeting with Barcelona as a Real player at the Nou Camp. "We are top of the league and if we win we have a four-point gap," he added. "It's going to be interesting. We are confident at the moment."

Cristiano Ronaldo is still a fan of Manchester Utd Real Madrid star still looks out for previous employer Despite creating the impression that he couldn’t wait to get away from smelly rainy Manchester, Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that he stilllooks out for the results of his old team now he is based in equally-smelly-but-less-rainy Madrid. The Mirror quotes: “Every time I can I try to watch United’s games on television. “I still like to know what’s happening at Old Trafford. And despite now being at Real, I’m always happy when I know when United have won.” C-Ron also took the opportunity to wax lyrical about Nani, who he believes is destined to become one of the “best players in the world”: “I’ve also seen that Nani is playing much more than he was last season when I was there. That’s good for him and he will benefit from that

Ronaldo back on the mend Cristiano Ronaldo remains on course to resume full training with his Real Madrid team-mates later this week. The world's most expensive player has missed Madrid's last nine matches due to the injury that also ruled him out of both of Portugal's World Cup play-off matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina, but he is closing in on a return to action. Having taken part in ball work yesterday and earlier today, Ronaldo underwent more tests, after which the Spanish giants tonight confirmed the 24-year-old would continue his planned recovery until Friday, when he could return to training with his team-mates. As part of today's tests, Ronaldo was examined by Professor Niek van Dijk, the Dutch specialist who operated on the former Manchester United man's right ankle in the summer of 2008 and was also consulted by the Portuguese winger in Amsterdam a fortnight ago. Madrid did not announce when Ronaldo might be able to play again. On Saturday, Manuel Pellegrini's side face Racing Santander at the Bernabeu, before hosting FC Zurich in the Champions League next Wednesday and then travelling to Barcelona for 'El Clasico' the following weekend. Ronaldo first sustained the problem during the Champions League match against Marseille on September 30 and then aggravated it while playing for Portugal against Hungary

Casillas: Just give us time Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas has called for calm in the wake of the club's early exit from the Copa del Rey. Real's embarrassing loss to minnows Alcorcon last week has renewed the pressure on coach Manuel Pellegrini, but the experienced Casillas has responded to critics insisting that it takes time to build a successful side. During an interview with Japanese TV channel Wowow the Spanish international said "We need time, but that's hard to get here. "People want us to play well already, but it takes time. We have changed the players, the president and the coach. We must be calm." When asked about the influx of new signings at the club over the summer Casillas said he was delighted with the calibre of player brought into the squad, adding that he had played with the original Galacticos. "To be able to see players like Cristiano [Ronaldo] and Kaka gives even more hope to the players who are trained here," he indicated. "I've seen [Zinedine] Zidane, [David] Beckham and [Luis] Figo, and they did great things. Hopefully [the new stars] will do the same."

Roma in for Ruud awakening? Real Madrid hitman Ruud van Nistelrooy could be in line for a loan move to AS Roma in the January transfer window. Van Nistelrooy has declared that he is open to offers away from Real during the next transfer window to increase his chances of playing regular football and boost his chances of featuring for Holland in the 2010 World Cup. The veteran striker is currently behind Raul, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain in the Los Blancos attacking hierarchy, and a move to Italy could be on the cards. Famous FIFA agent Mino Raiola has stated that a temporary stay with the Lupi is a strong possibility. "Van Nistelrooy is finding little space at Real. His goal is the World Cup and he wants to persuade the Dutch coach to take him to South Africa. When big teams are involved, I never see problems with transfers," he told Radio Radio. "If the player agrees, an operation is feasible. There would be a paid salary for only six months. However, I don't know the opinion of [coach Claudio] Ranieri and Roma."
