  1. Hi, Don't know if this is the right forum, but would BZ consider splitting the Female Fashion Model forum? This forum is IMHO getting too big and unruley with the definition of what constitutes a fashion model stretched to include anyone who puts on a dress and gets photographed. People post pictures of models who are at best freelance (self-proclaimed fashion models) or models who add a profile to Fashionbank or ModelMayhem. While I have no issue with Art or Commercial models, it would be nice to have a sub-forum for professional fashion models (i.e. those assigned or previously assigned to reputable agencies; Elite, Next, WhyNot, Wilhelmina etc.). I also get that these agencies have 'talent' or 'commercial' sections and so I'm only talking mainboard. To be clear, I'm not trying to rid the forum of posts with nudity; sex and fashion are tightly bound. Indeed many established fashion models have dabbled with the likes of Playboy or even Hegre and I wouldn't see an issue with this. But these models are typically over 5' 7" (172cm) and appeared in editorials or on the catwalk. While there are exceptions (e.g. Kate Moss), if she's 5' 5" and nude, chances are she's not a fashion model even if she's been in an advert in Vogue. Jonjo

  3. Once you're a 'face' you have the ability to pick and choose without too much financial or career impact. It also depends on luck when you're starting out. I knew a model who told me that she informed her agency that she didn't want to do nude/topless. She happened to start modelling in the autumn and when I shot her she had already had eight other jobs in rapid succession. Again, once you have that portfolio behind you, it becomes a lot easier. As I said, it's backstage that many models find a bit daunting. If they're very, very lucky, they get a cubical with a curtain and even then you have designers and make-up buzzing around. Most come into modelling used to having a lot of male attention due to their looks and enter a world where they are seen as little more than a clothes horse; a mannequin. It takes time to get used to backstage mayhem and the fact it has little in common with the real world. One episode of NTM (or it could have been MMASM), had the designer telling the model to 'lose the knickers' as it was affecting the line of the dress. The wannabe model was horrified. While I don't think the film crew should have been there, it was a far more valid test than some titillation glamour shoots for the public. Miranda Kerr may not have done nude in front of the camera. Behind it? No way.
  4. I’d like to discuss my take on nudity in shows like Next Top Model. Whilst I believe there is a necessity to establish if the potential model is happy with her body, these shows do tend to use it for titillation of the general public. These photoshoots should however still be done, but behind the scenes. I was a professional fashion photographer for many a year and have seen many a model grind out a decent career without doing nude photoshoots. It is true however, that most models seeking that ‘supermodel’ status will do nude at some point. This will normally be after they are established and are ‘at ease’ being seen backstage in various states of undress. I personally don’t like the trend to do Playboy as, while the French version still adheres to artistic egalitarian aspirations of the original, the other versions have become somewhat seedy, top shelf affairs. To get back to my point, there is a huge difference between ‘in front of the camera’ nudity and backstage nudity. Wannabe Next Top Model fashion models can either avoid or defer the decision on the first. However, shyness over the second, I’ve never seen work and they need to be 100% comfortable with this. Also, by nudity I mean complete nudity. If they are unhappy about showing a breast camera side, then they shouldn't apply.
