My grandparents had a pair of them when I was young and I found that if you raise them from chicks they're completely fine with you... you are the food bringer, and they're smart enough to recognize that, and as long as you learn it's demeanor and body language you can more often then not avoid kicks.. As for expensive meh... subjective. You can get a baby for 500-600, and my family has horses so giving them the space and food they need isn't an issue at all. I just don't know if I want to put the time into raising one. I may be getting a Bullmastiff puppy soonish and would rather put the time and energy into properly training the doge.

I have aquatic turtles and because of how I take care of them, they're expensive pets for sure... Initially, I had to buy a huge tank because during the evenings and through the fall/winter they're indoors. In my bedroom I have a 150-gallon stock tank, then I had to buy the Canister Filter which was like 320$ so I could cycle a min of 300 gallons of water per hour. Then I got a heater which was about 60$, plus a backup heater. My water bill gets high doing regular water changes and deep cleaning. My electricity is higher than normal because I have a special UVB/UVA/Heat lights on for 11 to 12 hours a day, plus running the filter 24/7. I change my lights every 3/4 months so that's an extra 40$. Then I had to buy them an outdoor enclosure for the spring and summer months so they get natural uvb... that's another 400$, then monthly I have to spend about 80$ just on stuff for the filter, stuff to deal with water treatments, and live planets... Then my boys get fresh veggies/fruits and the most expensive turtle food on the market, so that's another 20+ a month.. Then I buy them fish, live shrimps, worms, meal-worms. On top of that, I spend about 50-60$ every couple of months on new driftwood pieces for their tanks. I like to change it up so it's something new for them. I have 7 T's (Tarantulas), easy animals to care for. I have 2 cats, expensive assholes. And my dog is super low key.
