FX Moving Forward with “American Horror Stories” Spinoff Series

https://bloody-disgusting.com

After an Instagram tease by “American Horror Story” creator Ryan Murphy, FX is officially moving forward with “American Horror Stories,” their spinoff series that will feature “one-hour contained episodes.”

Deadline reports that FX has given a formal green light to the series that will launch alongside “American Horror Story”, which has been renewed through season 13.

While a standalone series, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some overlap between the two, being that “AHS” has canonized the entire series.

As for “American Horror Story”, the site notes that like.

In other words, it sounds like there won’t be season-long themes/storylines for “American Horror Stories,” but rather it’ll be a true horror anthology series with a new/standalone horror story told in each episode.

Murphy writes on Instagram that he and the “AHS” cast discussed the spinoff in a recent Zoom chat, but what’s a little bit strange is that the photo included with the post is actually fan-made. Instagram fan page The Horror Story posted it just yesterday, imagining a Zoom reunion that hadn’t actually taken place. It would seem, however, that though the image is fake, there indeed was a legitimate Zoom hangout between Murphy and the cast.

And Murphy’s caption, wherein he announces “American Horror Stories,” seems to be quite genuine.

Don Mancini Teases “Chucky” TV Series; “Chucky Has a Different Goal Than He’s Ever Had Before” the team discussed when Season 10 will begin filming, and other things he can’t talk about at this time. the team discussed when Season 10 will begin filming, and other things he can’t talk about at this time.all Hollywood productions during the coronavirus pandemic, filming of the upcoming 10th season is in limbo, with no start date set yet.

The (original) Child’s Play franchise is headed to the small screen with Syfy‘s upcoming “Chucky,” which hails from franchise creator Don Mancini and “Channel Zero” mastermind Nick Antosca. Mancini has promised a “fresh take on the franchise” with a series that’ll “explore Chucky’s character with a depth that is uniquely afforded by the television series format.”

Chatting with Syfy Wire ahead of this Thursday night’s (May 21) Child’s Play watch party over on Twitter, Mancini provides a bit more insight into what we can expect from the series.

“With this TV show, our mission has been to preserve the straightforward scariness of the original film or the first couple of films,” Mancini explains. “But at the same time, continue on with this ever-expanding tapestry of consistent story that we’ve spun over the course of seven movies and 30-some years. I think fans are really gonna love to see the new characters that we introduce into this realm and just to see how they came off of our classic characters. Not just Chucky, but some of the others that you may be hoping to see. There’s a good chance they may turn up.”

Jennifer Tilly, on that particular note, has already confirmed she’ll be back.

Mancini also teased in his chat with Syfy Wire, “I think the prospect of seeing Chucky sharpen his skills and add to his toolbox, some of the technical goodies that we have at our disposal now, that’s something I think people will find pretty interesting. It’s so important to give Chucky new weapons, new strategies, and new targets, new goals. Chucky has a different goal in the TV show than he’s ever had before and it’s specifically something that is designed to evoke something that’s going on in the zeitgeist today.”

In the upcoming series, which had been set to begin filming this summer before the ongoing coronavirus pandemic halted all productions, “After a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.”

Stephen King‘s “The Stand” has been a hot topic of discussion ever since the coronavirus began ravaging the United States, with many – including King himself – comparing the fictional events of the epic novel to the very real events playing out before us today. Of course, as King has been quick to point out, the novel’s pandemic is (thankfully) a whole lot worse.

In any event, it’s interesting that CBS All Access was filming an adaptation of King’s “The Stand” at the time productions across the world were forced to shut down, with Josh Boone (The New Mutants) at the helm. As noted in a piece run by Vanity Fair, the series was mostly finished and will still be airing as planned, and we’ve got some first look photos today.

Screenshot_2020-05-29 First Images from CBS All Access’ “The Stand” Highlight Alexander Skarsgård as Randall Flagg and More.png

The series will bring to life King’s vision of a world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil. The fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.

The cast includes Alexander Skarsgård as Randall Flagg and Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abagail, and Vanity Fair’s piece provides us with our first look at those characters and more. You can check out some of the images that originally ran in their piece below, and we encourage you to head over to Vanity Fair to learn/see much more from the upcoming show.

The cast also includes Jovan Adepo, Owen Teague, Greg Kinnear, Brad William Henke, Nat Wolff, Daniel Sunjata, James Marsden, Amber Heard, Odessa Young, Eion Bailey, Katherine McNamara, Heather Graham, Marilyn Manson, Hamish Linklater and Henry Zaga. Showrunners for “The Stand” are Benjamin Cavell and Taylor Elmore (“Justified”).

Freeform’s 90s-Set Thriller Series “Last Summer” Becomes “Cruel Summer” With Olivia Holt Starring

Screenshot_2020-05-29 Freeform’s 90s-Set Thriller Series “Last Summer” Becomes “Cruel Summer” With Olivia Holt Starring.png

Freeform ordered the Jessica Biel-produced thriller “Last Summer” to series early this year, but Deadline reports today that the series has been re-titled to the more sinister-sounding “Cruel Summer.”

Additionally, Olivia Holt (“Cloak & Dagger”) has been set to star.

“In the series, from Bert V. Royal, Jessica Biel and eOne, Holt will play one of the two lead characters, Kate, the embodiment of teenage perfection whose life is one to be envied until she mysteriously disappears.”

Mika Abdalla had played this role in the show’s pilot episode.

“Cruel Summer takes place over three summers–’93, ’94, ’95–in a small Texas town when a beautiful popular teen, Kate, is abducted and, seemingly unrelated, a girl, Jeanette, goes from being a sweet, awkward outlier to the most popular girl in town and, by ’95, the most despised person in America.”

“Each episode is told from the POV of one of the two main girls (Jeanette and Kate), which will have the viewers loyalties constantly shifting as more information is revealed.”

“Cruel Summer” is expected to air in 2021.

Comic Book Adaptation “Sweet Tooth” Gets a Series Order from Netflix With Jim Mickle Directing

Screenshot_2020-05-29 Comic Book Adaptation “Sweet Tooth” Gets a Series Order from Netflix With Jim Mickle Directing.png

Set in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by human/animal hybrids, Jeff Lemire’s comic series Sweet Tooth debuted on the scene back in 2009 via Vertigo Entertainment, and Hulu had been attached to bring the comics to the small screen just a couple years ago. We’ve learned via Deadline, however, that the series is now at Netflix.

Netflix has given an eight-episode pick-up to Team Downey and Warner Bros. TV’s hour-long series “Sweet Tooth,” with Jim Mickle (Stake Land, “Hap and Leonard”) still on board to direct. Mickle had also been attached to the Hulu version of the project.

“Sweet Tooth follows the adventures of Gus — part deer, part boy — who leaves his home in the forest to find the outside world ravaged by a cataclysmic event. He joins a ragtag family of humans and animal-children hybrids like himself in search of answers about this new world and the mystery behind his hybrid origins.”

Christian Convery (Beautiful Boy), Nonso Anozie (The Laundromat), Adeel Akhtar (Les Misérables) and Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) will star, with James Brolin as the voice of the narrator.

Mickle will also write, executive produce and co-showrun “Sweet Tooth” alongside Beth Schwartz (“Arrow”). Producers also include Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell and Evan Moore, as well as Linda Moran.

Channel Zero” Creator Nick Antosca Adapting True ‘Abducted in Plain Sight’ Story as Limited Series

Screenshot_2020-05-29 “Channel Zero” Creator Nick Antosca Adapting True ‘Abducted in Plain Sight’ Story as Limited Series.png

Announced today, UCP, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios, and Nick Antosca (“The Act,” “Channel Zero”) have won the rights to Jan Broberg’s stranger-than-fiction story, with plans to turn the real-life tale into a limited series. The story had recently been told in Netflix’s shocking documentary Abducted in Plain Sight.

The untitled Jan Broberg project is a limited series following the bizarre true story of the Broberg family, whose daughter Jan was kidnapped multiple times over a period of years by a charismatic, obsessed family “friend.” The Brobergs —devoted to their faith, family, and community — were utterly unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their neighbor used to exploit their vulnerabilities, drive them apart, and turn their daughter against them.

This is the story of how their lives were permanently altered — and how they survived.

Antosca, under his production banner Eat the Cat, will write and executive produce via his overall deal with UCP. Both Jan and her mother, Mary Ann Broberg, will serve as producers. Alex Hedlund of Eat the Cat will co-executive produce. Skye Borgman of Top Knot Films will serve as a consulting producer.

Antosca is also currently working on Don Mancini’s “Chucky” series.

Daddy^^

In addition to the David Bruckner-directed film that was announced earlier this month, Deadline now reports tonight that Hellraiser is also getting a TV series courtesy of HBO!

David Gordon Green (Halloween, Halloween Kills) is directing the pilot and “several more initial episodes,” and Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat, Krampus, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) is on board to write alongside Mark Verheiden (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Heroes”)!

Deadline details, “The idea is to create an elevated continuation and expansion of the well-established Hellraiser mythology. It is by no means a remake, but rather assumes the past mythology to be a given. The centerpiece remains Pinhead, the pin cushion-headed merciless leader of the Cenobites, the formerly humans-turned-demons that live in an extra-dimensional realm and are activated through a puzzle box called the Lament Configuration. The Cenobites come from hell to harvest human souls and keep balance between good and evil.”

The HBO series is said to be completely unconnected to the Spyglass/David Bruckner film. It will be the Clive Barker-created franchise’s very first foray into the world of television.

Executive producers include David Gordon Green, Michael Dougherty, Mark Verheiden, Dan Farah, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee, Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman, Eric Gardner, Andrew Farah, Adam Salzman, Danny McBride, Jody Hill and Brandon James.

Candy”: Elisabeth Moss Starring in Series About a Real Life Axe Murder on Friday the 13th in 1980

The wild true story of Candy Montgomery, who killed her friend with an ax on Friday, June 13th, 1980, is coming to the small screen, with Elisabeth Moss attached to star.

Reported by THR today, the limited series “Candy” is in the works at Universal Content Productions, and it’ll be shopped “to premium cable networks and streaming services.”

“Candy” is based on the true story of Montgomery and her victim, Betty Gore.

“Set in 1980 Texas, Candy (Moss) had it all — a loving husband with a good job, a daughter and son and a nice house in the new suburbs — and killed her friend from church with an ax.”

Nick Antosca (“Channel Zero”) is executive producing alongside Robin Veith, Lindsey McManus and Elisabeth Moss. The pilot episode’s script was written by Robin Veith.

Moss said in a statement shared by The Hollywood Reporter, “I have been wanting to play an anti-heroine for a while now, and have been trying to work with Robin [Veith] again after Mad Men for even longer, so when she asked me if I wanted to play a housewife from Texas who, some would say, got away with murder, I simply said, ‘Where do I sign?’ Adding the opportunity to work with Nick [Antosca] after his incredible work on The Act was like taking a delicious dessert and putting 100 cherries on top. My producing partner Lindsey [McManus] and I are so thrilled to be partnering with them and Alex and Scott and everyone at UCP on a show that I believe is truly going to be like no other we’ve done and will be a role like none I’ve ever played.”

“Westworld” Creators Developing “Fallout” TV Series for Amazon

The latest smash hit video game franchise to make the leap to the small screen is “Fallout,” with the announcement made today that the creators of “Westworld” are developing a series for Amazon Studios. Kilter Films’ Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are executive producing the project, which has been given a series commitment for Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon teases, “The world of Fallout is one where the future envisioned by Americans in the late 1940s explodes upon itself through a nuclear war in 2077. The magic of the Fallout world is the harshness of the wasteland set against the previous generation’s utopian idea of a better world through nuclear energy. It is serious and harsh in tone, yet sprinkled with moments of ironic humor and B-movie-nuclear-fantasies.”

“Over the last decade, we looked at many ways to bring Fallout to the screen,” said Todd Howard, Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios. “But it was clear from the moment I first spoke with Jonah and Lisa a few years ago, that they and the team at Kilter were the ones to do it right. We’re enormous fans of their work and couldn’t be more excited to work with them and Amazon Studios.”

“Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios,” said Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, Kilter Films.

“Fallout is an iconic global franchise, with legions of fans worldwide and a rich, deeply compelling storyline that powers it. And Jonah and Lisa are the perfect storytellers to bring this series to life,” said Albert Cheng, COO and Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios. “We’re thrilled to join with Bethesda to bring Fallout to television.”

“Fallout” is from Amazon Studios and Kilter Films in association with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks, with executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham for Kilter Films, Todd Howard for Bethesda Game Studios, and James Altman for Bethesda Softworks.

Steve Alten’s Digital Series ‘Where Sea Monsters Roam’ Unleashes Aquatic Horrors With First Trailer

https://i2.wp.com/bloody-disgusting.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/10.png?ssl=1

The most terrifying sea monsters in history… are no longer history.

NY Times and international best-selling author Steve Alten, the writer of the Meg books that made their way onto the big screen back in 2018, is back this summer with brand new project Sea Monster Cove, billed as “a never before seen form of virtual entertainment.”

Along with an immersive 360VR experience and a multi-player game, as well as an educational center, tours, e-store and more, SeaMonsterCove.com will host the episodic “Where Sea Monsters Roam,” a 13-episode digital series directed by and starring Maxime Ginolin.

The official press release sent to BD today explains, “Every month a new episode of the series will be released along with other perks within the virtual park. To thank the “early birds” the first 10,000 visitors will be offered V.I.P. membership, providing the most privileges and bonuses at the guaranteed lowest price of only $9.95 a month.”

In “Where Sea Monsters Roam”:

“While in the Northern Marianas on assignment, marine biologist Dr. Maxime Rostand performs an emergency C-section on what he believes is a pregnant Basking shark caught in the net of a Taiwanese fishing trawler, only to discover a new species – Carcharocles daemonium – a 60-foot prehistoric Mako. Only two of the dead female’s fifteen pups survive; Snowflake (an albino) and Layla (pure black demon). Faced with a choice of killing the sharks or risk introducing an ancient apex predator into our oceans, Dr. Rostand and his companions decide to raise the siblings in Maug’s lagoon which they believe shares the same hot mineral waters as the mysterious habitat from which their mother fled – a lost primordial aquifer that dates back 330 million years.”

Ridley Scott’s HBO Max Series “Raised by Wolves

https://i1.wp.com/bloody-disgusting.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/raised-by-wolves-poster.jpg?ssl=1

Mother was programmed to protect everyone after Earth had been destroyed.

When the big bad wolf shows up, she is the one we must trust.

Originally set up at TNT, Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi series “Raised by Wolves” is soon coming our way from HBO Max, and a pretty wild first trailer has been unleashed onto the net today.

Much like the Alien franchise that Ridley Scott brought into the world, “Raised by Wolves” features both androids and creatures, and I’m pretty sure I’m already hooked on the unique world it’s presenting. It almost feels like a case of Scott, who co-created and co-directs the series, freeing himself from the shackles of the Alien franchise. Here he looks to be playing with ideas he explored with his prequels, only now no longer beholden to that mythology or fan expectation. With a sequel to Covenant unlikely, this may be the next best thing.

The good news? We don’t have to wait very long to start watching. “Raised by Wolves” will be hitting HBO Max on September 3. While you wait, check out your first look below!

The sci-fi drama is about androids raising human children in an outer-space colony.

Written by Aaron Guzikowski, it focuses on two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious, virgin planet. As the colony of humans divides over religious differences, the androids learn controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous, difficult job.

The cast includes Travis Fimmel, Amanda Collin, Abubakar Salim, Winta McGrath, Niamh Algar, Felix Jamieson, Ethan Hazzard, Jordan Loughran, Aasiya Shah and Ivy Wong.

“Raised by Wolves” comes from Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions (The Good Fight, The Man in the High Castle), Turner’s Studio T and Madhouse Entertainment. Scott, Guzikowski, Scott Free’s David W. Zucker and Jordan Sheehan and Madhouse’s Adam Kolbrenner and Robyn Meisinger will serve as exec producers.

Remember the 1992 Nightmare Comedy ‘Stay Tuned’? It’s Being Turned into a TV Series

Back in 1992, John Ritter and Pam Dawber starred in Morgan Creek’s Stay Tuned as a married couple who find themselves in possession of a brand new satellite dish, one that carries 666 channels and ultimately sucks them into a hellish world called “Hellevision.” In order to save their souls, they have to survive 24 hours inside twisted versions of iconic programs.

The film was directed by Peter Hyams, and believe it or not, it’s being reported by Deadline that a television series adaptation of the wacky concept is in the works at AMC Studios.

The “Stay Tuned” series comes from Ian Goldberg (“Fear the Walking Dead”) and Richard Naing, the duo who wrote Andre Ovredal’s horror movie The Autopsy of Jane Doe.

Morgan Creek Entertainment will executive produce the series.

Netflix and “Game of Thrones” Team Adapting Sci-fi Novel Trilogy “The Three-Body Problem”

image.png

International best-seller The Three-Body Problem is being turned into a Netflix original series, an English-language adaptation of Chinese author Liu Cixin‘s science fiction trilogy.

Telling the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization, the trilogy will be adapted by writers and executive producers David Benioff & D.B. Weiss (“Game of Thrones”), and Alexander Woo (“The Terror: Infamy,” “True Blood”), as well as executive producers Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman (Looper, Knives Out, Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi).

“The first time I read The Three-Body Problem trilogy (Remembrance of Earth’s Past), it changed what science fiction meant to me forever,” Netflix’s VP of Original Series, Peter Friendlaner, said in a statement today. “Although it may seem like a familiar premise – the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization – Chinese author Liu Cixin’s ability to interweave science with fiction made his vision of the future and extra-terrestrial contact feel more realistic than any other science fiction I’ve read. At the same time, I was also drawn in by the story of all of humanity vulnerable to the same external threat and how this both unifies and divides humans.”

He continued, “Since my earliest days at Netflix working on series like Black Mirror and Sense8, I’ve sought out stories and POVs that are singular. This story felt singular, special – and eminently relatable. That’s why I’m pleased to announce that the Hugo Award-winning The Three-Body Problem and its two sequels are coming to Netflix as a series. We have been granted the rights from The Three-Body Universe and Yoozoo Group to produce the English-language series adaptation and have assembled a talented and thoughtful creative team to do so. Every person involved not only shares a passion and high esteem for the books, but also the creative vision and ambition to help bring this remarkable story to life for audiences around the world.”

Authors Liu Cixin and Ken Liu will serve as consulting producers for the mind-bending drama.

The creative team also includes executive producers Bernadette Caulfield (“Game of Thrones,” “The X-Files”), newly-installed President of Benioff & Weiss’ production company; Nena Rodrigue, President of Television for Johnson and Bergman’s production company, T-Street; Lin Qi, Chairman of the rights-holders – Yoozoo Group and The Three-Body Universe, and Zhao Jilong, Vice President of The Three-Body Universe, who are deeply committed to meaningfully building out the Three-Body franchise; Plan B Entertainment (Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner’s company) known for bringing to screen critically acclaimed and global projects with great reverence including Okja for Netflix and the Academy Award–winning Moonlight; as well as Rosamund Pike and Robie Uniacke whose company Primitive Streak specializes in prestige international literary property.
