"The dressing room is united, sharing the same goals"

Sergio Ramos said the squad is united in a press conference this morning. He is optimistic with the team's chances of winning the League, but he is cautious and thinks they must focus on each game at a time. He knows their main opponents to the title are going through a hard time, but he prefers to think about the good job Real Madrid are doing. He hopes to defeat Racing Santander on Saturday and to be able to stop striker Zigic, who is currently having an excellent run.

The basketball team won the ULEB Cup last night.

I want to congratulate them. They've done an excellent job and deserved to win. We are happy with how well things are going for the basketball team because their victories are very important for the Club.

The League couldn't be tighter...

It's being very interesting because there are hardly any differences between the teams on the top of the table. We managed to get closer to the leaders this weekend. We're happy. We must remain calm because any mistake can be fatal at this stage. Four teams are currently strong contenders for the title and I hope we manage to win in the end, but it will be very hard.

Three weeks ago nobody thought you could win.

We respect everyone else's opinions. Three weeks ago no one gave a dime for us and now everyone does. We are currently favourites to the title, but I don't care about that. We must take each game at a time.

Has the team overcome its stagefright at the Bernabéu?

I personally never had stagefright. The most important and beautiful thing for a player should be to play at home before his own fans. We've made an improvement and we hope to win every point at stake at the Bernabéu.

Do you think Barcelona suffer from Madriditis

I don't go to Barcelona very often... I only think about my team and I want to make our fans enjoy watching us play. I think the fans are getting more confident and excited. They support us more now. That's what's really important for us, not what happens anywhere else.

Do you think Barcelona are having a bad spell?

I don't know what happens indoors at Barcelona. I only know they have a great squad. Every good team goes through good and bad spells. We are currently having a good run because we stand united, sharing the same goals. It's hard for any team to keep up with the demands Barcelona have had. They always take their toll on you in the end, which is what's happened to them, but they are still leaders.

This weekend you will play against Racing Santander.

We must respect our rival. We always try to win the three points wherever we play, but Racing are playing at a very high level. We are worried about their striker Zigic because he is capable of scoring at any given time.

Is it harder to defend against such a tall striker?

Yes it is. We have to anticipate every one of his movements. We mustn't allow him to face the goal.

Valencia were eliminated from the Champions League yesterday, which means they can now focus more on the League.

When a team stops being in another competition it has more time to recover and prepare for a League match. It would have been better for them and for us if they had gone through to the next round.

Do you think the Premiership is better than La Liga?

Our League is one of the best in the world, if not the best. Every player wants to play in Spain. Except for Barcelona's victory last year, Spanish football isn't doing so well in Europe, while English teams are, but our League is still very good.

Would you like to end the season as a right back?

I'm not worried about which position I play in. The coach has faith in me. We must all adapt to the team's needs. I like playing as a right back, especially because I can attack more.

People talk a lot about Atletico Madrid's controversial goal against Villarreal...

You never know. The most important thing is to respect your rival. I would have kicked the ball out if someone from the other team was down because you never know how seriously he can be injured.

Mistakes Can Still Be Fatal, Ramos Warns Madrid

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos spoke at length about the the title race, Barcelona, and the upcoming clash away to Racing Santander.

The Title Race

"It's becoming very interesting because there are hardly any differences between the teams on the top of the table," he said, when asked about the way things stand in La Liga at the moment.

Real Madrid closed to within two points of Barcelona after beating Osasuna at home, and the former Sevilla man was happy with the effort.

"We managed to get closer to the leaders this weekend and we're happy," he said. "But we must remain calm because any mistake can be fatal at this stage.

"Four teams are currently strong contenders for the title and I hope we manage to win in the end, but it will be very hard."

Critics
