Raúl's Title Tilt Soured By Spain Omission

Raúl believes that the Spanish league title could be decided in the next three games and tipped Real Madrid to take the top spot if they continue winning.

The 29-year-old striker is confident that his side can leapfrog both Sevilla and FC Barcelona to clinch their first piece of silverware since 2003.

With six games of the season remaining the race is one of the most open for many years, but Raúl thinks that if Madrid chalk a run of wins then they will not be stopped.

"If we win our last six games then we will be champions," he said, repeating the mantra. "The title will be decided in the next three days.

"The club needs to turn things around and our prestige needs to be recovered."

The Madrid captain then revealed his pain at being told of his omission from the Spain squad through the media, but was upbeat about Real Madrid's title chances.

Raúl has not played for his country since the defeat in Northern Ireland last September after coach Luis Aragonés dropped him.

Having played 102 times for la Selección since making his debut in 1996, Raúl was left out of recent call-ups after his unimpressive club form earlier this season.

It was not that the decision was taken that hurt the Madrid skipper, but the fact that he felt his relationship with Aragonés was open enough to be told personally.

"After we have been through together with the national team, I should not have had to find out through the press," Raúl said.

"A telephone call would not have been bad. I have told him that I do not think the way he did things was right."

Making history

Raúl will play his 602nd match for Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos his 100th in La Liga on Sunday

Sunday's match against Sevilla is special for the entire Real Madrid squad, who circled Matchday 33 on the calendar as the day to make its charge on the League. But the game is especially symbolic for two players. Raúl will play his 602nd match for Real Madrid, while Sergio Ramos will hit the century mark in the First Division.

As said on more than many occasions, Raúl González Blanco can break all the longevitity records at Real Madrid. Should Fabio Capello decide to put the forward in the starting lineup against Sevilla this Sunday, Raúl will play his 602nd official match for Real Madrid. The captain would then surpass his predecessor Fernando Hierro, who retired with 601 games under his belt. But perhaps more importantly, Raúl is a stone's throw away from breaking the all-time record, held by Manuel Sanchís with 712, and the only other two legends -Santillana (643) and Francisco Gento (605)- also ahead of him are within striking distance.

“I never imagined I would play so many games. It's a proud moment for me and I am privileged to find my name on these lists,” commented Raúl to Radio Marca yesterday. But what really matters to number ‘7’ is tallying the three points against Sevilla: “Focusing on the present is what's important. We're in a good spot to win the League. This is all great, but later on, and not right now.”

CENTURY CLUB SERGIO RAMOS

Sunday will also mark a milestone for Sergio Ramos, and not just because the defender faces Sevilla, the team that catapulted him to fame and the doorstep of Real Madrid. At the age of 21 years, one month, and eight days, Sergio will play his 100th match in the First Division. The trait of a veteran for a kid expected to become, if not already, one of Real Madrid's pillars.

As published today by Spanish sports daily AS, Ramos made his First Division debut on 1 February 2004 in a Deportivo-Sevilla match at the Riazor. Only six players have reached the century mark at a younger age: Etxeberria, Eloy, Jose Mari, López Ufarte, Uriarte... and Raúl.

Real Madrid vs. Sevilla

KEEPERS: Casillas, Diego Lopez.

DEFENDERS: Ramos, Cicinho, Cannavaro, Helguera, Marcelo, Michel Salgado, Torres

MIDFIELDERS: Guti, Gago, Emerson, Diarra, Robinho, Raul, Reyes, Beckham.

STRIKERS: Higuain, Van Nistelrooy.

THEY WON!!!   We are getting so much closer to winning league!

It sucked that Capello pulled Raul out so early but Guti ended up having a fantastic game.

Thanks Aga for the videos and pics.
