Fabregas - Real Madrid's next skipper?

Real Madrid plan to launch an audacious bid to snatch Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas from under the nose of rivals Barcelona.

According to reports from the Sun, Real boss Jose Mourinho will make a direct appeal to Fabregas to join him at Madrid in the summer.

The report claims that Real will bid £35million for Fabregas, who considered leaving Arsenal at the start of the season, or offer defender Ezequiel Garay, midfielders Lassana and Mahamadou Diarra or Gago in part-exchange.

"Mourinho has decided to convince Cesc personally he can be the next leader of the team," a source told the Sun.

The newspaper's source, however, still believes that the midfielder's boyhood club Barcelona remain favourites to sign him should he decide to leave England.

Arsenal's 23-year-old star player recently came back from injury to guide the Gunners to a vital 3-1 win over Chelsea earlier in the week. Arsene Wenger's men, though, missed the chance to join the two Manchester clubs at the top of the Premier League when they drew 2-2 againts 10-man Wigan Athletic on Wednesday night.

Arsenal play again at the weekend when they travel to Birmingham City.

Find the best odds and bet on the Premier League.

Cesc Fabregas has agreed to leave Arsenal for Barcelona and will move to Camp Nou in the summer.

El Mundo Deportivo claims the Spanish international will don the famous Azulgrana shirt next season after agreeing a deal with the Catalan giants.

The 23-year-old will also be given the number 4 jersey and is expected to pen a five year deal until June 2016.

However, Barcelona will have to negotiate a transfer with Arsenal who would be resistant to a move.

But, a €50million deal could be enough to convince the Gunners into parting company with their man.

Xavi: Barcelona will welcome Fabregas

Barcelona midfielder Xavi has described Cesc Fabregas as an extraordinary player.

Barca failed with two bids for their former youth team midfielder last year and have reportedly had an initial offer turned down this summer as well.

But the Catalan club are likely to return with a new bid for the 24 year-old in the coming days and Xavi says his arrival would be positive for Barca.

"Competition is always good and Cesc is an extraordinary footballer," he said.

"If he comes, it will be to help out."

However, the midfielder hopes comparisons will not be drawn between Cesc and himself, as happened when Xavi broke through in the late 1990s and was dubbed as a successor to then captain and now coach Pep Guardiola.

"They put that label on me of being a replacement for Pep Guardiola and it wasn't fun at all," the 31-year-old said.

Xavi also celebrated the renewal of 20 year-old midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who has signed a new contract to remain at the Nou Camp until 2015.

"Thiago has renewed and that's great news," he said.

"He is a fantastic player with a lot of talent - the competitiveness of the group is great."

Xavi began last season with a niggling injury, but says he is feeling good ahead of the next campaign.

"I feel good physically, I'm very motivated and content," he said.

"Last year I suffered some tendonitis in the Achilles tendon but I'm over that.

"I'll try to start off as best I can and at the highest level."
