Kelly Knox is a dedicated and passionate “crusader” for Diversity in Fashion with the aim to dismiss society’s preconceptions about what it means to be disabled. She wants to challenge the perception of what it means to be beautiful within the fashion industry. She says: “I would like to see disability normalised in fashion.”

Ben Barry Agency:

My family background is … English, Irish, Scottish, German and Dutch! Now how diverse is that?  Recent accomplishments … I was recently one of Gok Wan’s “Gokettes” in “How to Look Good Naked,” appearing in two series. I enjoy helping kids, teenagers and adults alike across the globe by giving them inspiration, boosting their self esteem, helping them overcome confidence issues and empowering them. To me, that’s a massive accomplishment! Everybody deserves to be happy within their own body.  I challenge the beauty ideal by … showing that just because I am not considered “perfect” in the fashion world (whatever that means!), I’m very passionate about my work as a model. I produce some amazing work and I believe I deserve to grace the covers of fashion magazines such as Vogue and Elle regardless of not conforming to the fashion world’s stereotypes.  If I could tell a young girl anything I would say … believe in you! Always know that you are beautiful – no matter what. No person is the same – if we were, the world would be a dull place. Be optimistic, positive, pursue your passion, and follow your heart and intuition with zeal. Smile and the world will smile with you.  In the modelling world I would like to see … more brands, more designers, more advertisers and more photographers be brave and take risks! Change is a natural part of evolution, so they should embrace it! I want to be the pied piper of fashion – leading the way of a new era.  My ultimate modelling job would be … the face of a well known brand in an advertising campaign. I want to see myself on billboards! I see myself as a role model not only for people with disabilities, but people as a whole and seeing somebody such as me on a billboard, representing a brand, would be such a positive image. In the UK, girls are developing eating disorders younger & younger. I do wonder whether it is because all they see in advertisements & fashion magazines are these so called images of perfection. Do they think in order to be beautiful and successful they have to look a certain way? If this changed, would this help people be more accepting of themselves? I think so.

Kelly Knox:

So many people strive to ‘look perfect’ – I am not perfect, I accept myself for who I am. Your looks are not everything. The people you love, your health and inner happiness is what matters the most. So do not beat yourself up trying to be perfect, perfection does not exist – If this world was perfect, there would be no wars, no crimes, no third world countries, no suffering and no pain.

We all have our flaws, revel in your every imperfection knowing that you are beautiful in your very own unique way.

It really is okay to be you.
