Button happy with Honda progress

Jenson Button is happy with the progress being made at Honda since the end of last season and despite the fact that the team is still languishing in the lower part of the time sheets in winter testing.

"We've put in a lot of hours to make sure the car is reliable and running smoothly," Button said. "I'm happy with the way things are going. We're making improvements at every test in many areas and the car is very driveable. We can really build on it."

"Our pace is definitely not going to be enough to get us near the front, but there's a lot more to come before the first race," he added.

Button expects a better season for Honda

TOKYO: Honda's British driver Jenson Button on Thursday predicted a better season following a disastrous last year for the under-achieving Formula One team.

The struggling outfit late last year brought in Ross Brawn, a 10-year veteran of Ferrari, as its new team principal to work alongside CEO Nick Fry.

Last year, Honda's best performance was Button's fifth place at the Chinese Grand Prix.

“I must say I'm very happy with the way things are going. We are making improvements at every test in many, many areas,” Button told reporters in Tokyo ahead of the new season.

“For me, I'm happy also because the car is a great driveable car. It's a car we can really build on, so going into 2008, I'm positive that we can have a good year.

“I'm looking forward to 2008 and also the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne,” he said, referring to the season opener on March 16.

'Untamable' playboy Jenson Button splits with model girlfriend

His playboy ways have cost Jenson Button dearly.

Last month the 28-year-old Formula 1 racer was seen drooling over a pretty brunette.

Now I can reveal he has split from his longterm girlfriend Florence Brudenell-Bruce.

My sources say Flee, as she is known, gave Button the push last week.

"Flee is gorgeous but Jenson couldn't be tamed,' says a friend of the 22-year-old.

"They have cooled things off."

Button's spokesman says: "They have split."

"They both have busy lives and their own careers."

BUTTON SEES BRIGHT FUTURE FOR HONDA

It is inconceivable Honda could endure as wretched a season this year as they did in 2007.

The team won a miserable six points in total from the 17 grands prix - all by Jenson Button - with team-mate Rubens Barrichello drawing a blank for the first time in his 15-season career.

Their embarrassment was made even more painfully acute by the fact they managed to score only two more points than Super Aguri to whom they supply engines, yet whose budget they dwarf in comparison.

Fundamental design flaws and lack of leadership, with too many people pulling in different directions, resulted in the car being one of the worst to take to a track in recent seasons.

Button and Barrichello were naturally dejected, yet they carried themselves with dignity throughout a tortuous campaign as they refused to ridicule or deride those at fault.

The two men appreciated their criticisms would serve no purpose, so they primarily kept their counsel, while at the same time hoping matters would be addressed behind the scenes.

What unfolded towards the tail-end of last season was a pro-active recruitment drive as Honda sought to employ the best.

When Ross Brawn was appointed team principal in November, Honda scored a considerable coup in landing a man widely regarded as a technical genius, and key to Ferrari's return to winning ways.

Much is now expected of Brawn, but for this year do not anticipate that Honda will all of a sudden emerge from being tail-enders to title challengers.

Button knows a greater degree of respectability would be much more in keeping, with Brawn's ideas and philosophy likely to come to the fore in 2009.

Although testing results have not been particularly encouraging, there is still an air of positivity swirling around Honda that was undoubtedly missing this time a year ago.

"For the first race I think it would be good for us to be in the points; that would be a good starting point," assessed Button.

"But we are not able to turn it round so quickly because so much has changed within this team, with this car completely different to any other Honda or BAR I've driven.

"I'm still massively looking forward more to this season than I was last season where we had a car which wasn't just slow, but very difficult to drive and very unpredictable.

"I also believe in the people at the team now, whereas I didn't so much during last year because we didn't understand our problems.

"We didn't know how to improve. We thought we were doing so, but we weren't.

"With Ross being in control on the technical side, that is a big step forward for us because it's something we've been lacking.

"It's easy coming up with some good ideas, but it's understanding which ones we should work with, then persevere with and try and improve.

"Now we have that direction with Ross. Personally I feel the team is at its strongest it has been personnel-wise."

After suggestions last year he would consider leaving if the team did not start to show signs of improvement, Button could now note happier at Honda.

Whilst one man does not make a team, there can be no doubt Brawn's arrival has impacted significantly on Button's psyche.

"We all know it will take time for him to settle in and for his ideas to start making a difference with the mechanics of the car," added the 28-year-old, due to embark on his ninth year in Formula One.

"But within the team, even when Ross walks into a room, you can see the confidence of people lift.

"After what happened in 2007, it would have been very difficult to keep the whole team confident and giving 100 per cent. Morale does drop.

"But bringing in Ross has made a big difference because people really listen to him and what he has to say.

"The guy has so much experience in F1 after being involved with the best teams and winning championships, and that is important.

"At the moment, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in Formula One.

"I admit for 2008, it won't be us that wins a world championship.

"It will be McLaren or Ferrari, but for the future in the sport, I can't think of anywhere better to be than here at Honda.

"Ross knows it is a challenge here, that's it's not going to happen overnight, that it is going to take a while.

"But we have the facilities here to be a front-running team, we have the personnel now, so it is just a matter of time."
