August 9, 200915 yr 'Spotlight to Nightlight': Bilingual KidsMany celebrity kids are inheriting more than just fame and fortune from mom and dad; they are also carrying on the culture and language of their famous parents. Almost 20% of Americans are bi or multilingual. Some of the stars keeping up with the trend include Salma Hayek, Matthew McConaughey, Tiger Woods, Madonna, and Heidi Klum. On this episode of "Spotlight to Nightlight," host Ali Landry talks to Paola Turbay (ABC Family's "The Secret Life of The American Teenager," TNT's "The Closer," and NBC's "Meteor: Path to Destruction") about growing up in both the U.S. and Colombia, and raising her kids to be bilingual.Ali's TakeWhen I met my husband, Alejandro, I found out that his parents speak only Spanish. As our relationship progressed I knew that I had to take it upon myself to learn the language. It was scary and exciting and I wanted to make the effort. I thought that the best way to show his parents how much I cared about their culture (and their son) was to enroll in a Spanish school in Mexico to study and learn their native tongue. I know, I could have taken Spanish class anywhere, but I figured that if I was going to REALLY learn the language, I should LIVE it. So, I moved to San Miguel Allende, a small Spanish colonial town in central Mexico. I rented a house and enrolled in classes for a month. His parents were so thrilled about it that that they wanted to come and live with me for that month ... we would be roommates! It actually turned out great. We cooked and shopped together, and in the evenings we would go into the town square and listen to local music. It was magical. In the beginning, I only knew how to say "Hola," but by the end of that trip I had a basic vocabulary, was conjugating verbs, and had started a great relationship with Alejandro's parents. On the last day of school my husband flew down and proposed. Needless to say, my trip to Mexico was well worth it! I grew up in a family that spoke French but, unfortunately, I never really learned that language. I didn't want that to happen with Estela. I didn't want her to ask me one day why we hadn't taught her the language her family spoke. So when we had Estela we knew she was going to learn to speak Spanish from day one. In the beginning, my husband, our nanny, all of Alejandro's friends, and I spoke to her only in Spanish. She definitely grabbed hold of the language and for a while she did not learn much English. Kids are so smart. She quickly surpassed me in her Spanish skills and there were times when I couldn't understand what she was saying to me! At that point, I knew it was time for me to start talking to her in English and to get myself back into Spanish class! I now speak mostly English with her while Alejandro speaks mostly Spanish and it seems to be working out great. She automatically responds to each of us in those languages. It amazes me how easily children can pick up languages and switch between them. Now she speaks both languages so well that she can communicate with both sides of the family. One day, we hope to live both in Mexico and the States, so I am thrilled that she will be completely prepared and fluent -- and I plan to be as well. Deseo Suerte! September 1, 200915 yr Monday / 8.31.09 WWW.BELLEPARISH.COM ABOUT TO LAUNCH! Hey Everybody! There should be about 8 blog posts between my first and now, but I've been so busy with Belle Parish. This is an important blog b/c the Belle Parish website is about to be up and running! We can't wait for everyone to see the clothes, the concept, and all the hard work we've put in! My partner, Annie Kate and I had a photo shoot last week for the line and it was fantastic! We created a 'wonderland' set up in my backyard...our prop stylist, Katie Byron was amazing and the photographer, Tamar Levine captured the feeling of Belle Parish. You can see both of their work at http://www.tamarlevine.com and http://www.katiebyron.com We couldn't have done the shoot without Katie's expertise in prop styling and her creative sense put all the details in place and went beyond our expectations! Tamar was a trooper working with kids and moms! it was a long and very chaotic day, but she was able to portray through pictures what we envisioned while designing the line. It is so fulfilling to see it all come together and to know that the hard work paid off! The next step is getting the line OUT! The clothes are in Vegas right now at the Kid's show and we're looking for reps to take on the line. I will be going to Vegas in two weeks to preview the line at the ABC Kid's expo and this will be an important week for Belle Parish...fingers crossed everybody! We are waiting for the site to launch and it should be up and running by this evening! www.belleparish.com Let me know what you think! http://alilandrylife.com/follow/post/www.b...bout-to-launch/

September 3, 200915 yr Ali Landry Reveals Estela’s Ethereal Playroom When it came to creating a playroom for her 2-year-old daughter Estela Ines (with husband Alejandro Gomez Monteverde, 32, a film director), Ali Landry reached back to her small-town roots in Breaux Bridge, La. “Traditional — that’s my thing,” says the former Miss USA, who hosts Spotlight to Nightlight, a weekly parenting show on Yahoo.com. That means old-fashioned toys such as wooden blocks, and framed original Mattel Barbie sketches and dresses worn by Estela and Ali on the walls. “My mom saved them all,” she says. The actress took additional inspiration from Estela’s Los Angeles preschool. “We have an art center with an easel and paper and stickers,” says Ali, 36, who plans to also put in an ant farm. So does that mean Estela is a tomboy? “She goes to the playground and gets dirty,” says Ali, “but yeah: She’s in a dress!”

September 22, 200915 yr Thank you Nefertiti!! Ali Landry Celebrates the Launch of Belle Parish Ali Landry and partner Annie Kate Pons Ali Landry has a definite point of view when it comes to dressing daughter Estela Ines, 2 — and now she’s bringing it to the public! The actress and model celebrated the launch of her new children’s clothing line, Belle Parish, last Tuesday evening in Las Vegas. Held at Blush Boutique inside the Wynn Hotel, the event also featured the launch of Child Style magazine and was sponsored by Ju-Ju-Be, Itzy Ritzy, Mabel’s Labels, Bottle Snugglers, The Jumpitz and more. “Belle Parish is classic, sweet, whimsical clothes that are rooted in our Southern upbringing,” Ali tells PEOPLE of the line she’s launched with partner Annie Kate Pons. “For us, it’s like the hometown department store that closed 60 years ago and the doors have just re-opened. It’s vintage and tradition with a modern twist.” Calling her completed line “my dream,” Ali says that “to see it come together is a miracle! Belle Parish is about creating a lifestyle, but because I’m a mom I wanted to start with kid’s clothing. I also have a strong point of view about dressing children in age-appropriate clothes. I want to celebrate each stage of their life. We’re so excited about people’s response to our ideas.” Ali Landry and husband Alejandro Monteverde Ali Landry and partner Annie Kate Pons Swag bags from the launch party Belle Parish Clothing Belle Parish Clothing Belle Parish Clothing
