June 15, 201311 yr AFM 2012: Ed Zwick, Tobey Maguire's 'Pawn Sacrifice' Goes to Lionsgate International Set during the Cold War, the drama recalls Bobby Fischer's historic chess championship clash with the Soviets.Ed Zwick's Pawn Sacrifice -- starring Tobey Maguire as legendary chess player Bobby Fischer -- is beginning the journey toward getting financed.Lionsgate International, winning a heated bidding war among sales agents, has signed on to represent the project and will begin shopping Pawn Sacrifice to foreign buyers at the upcoming American Film Market, which gets underway Oct. 31.From a script by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things), Pawn Sacrifice is set during the height of the Cold War and Fischer's legendary championship with the Soviets even as he struggled against his own psychological demons.Gail Katz, whose credits include The Perfect Storm, is producing with Maguire's production company Material Pictures.At a young age, Fischer rocketed from a self-taught savant to a pop culture icon by becomming the youngest grandmaster in the history of chess, also famous for his unpredictable outbursts.In 1972, after a record-breaking winning streak, Fischer becomes the first American to reach the finals, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown against the seemingly invincible Soviet master Boris Spassky.Maguire is repped by WME; Zwick by CAA.Source: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/afm-2012-ed-zwick-tobey-maguire-pawn-sacrifice-383569
June 15, 201311 yr Jason Reitman Pic ‘Labor Day’ Gets Christmas ReleaseAnother Jason Reitman movie is getting prime awards-season placement. Paramount said the Juno and Up In The Air director’s latest, Labor Day, will open in limited release December 25 this year before expanding January 10 and going wide January 31. Tobey Maguire, Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, J.K. Simmons, James Van Der Beek, Brooke Smith, Gattlin Griffith, and Brighid Fleming star. The studio is also co-financing the pic, which Reitman also wrote as an adaptation of the Joyce Maynard novel. The story centers on a 13-year-old boy (Griffith) from New Hampshire who learns valuable life lessons over a five-day Labor Day weekend after an escaped convict (Brolin) seeks shelter with the boy’s single mom (Winslet). Mr. Mudd’s Lianne Halfon and Russ Smith are producing along with Helen Estabrook and Reitman. Indian Paintbrush is exec producing.
