Ann was born in Valley City, North Dakota on Jan. 22, 1909. She is a film and television actress whose career lasted for over 6 decades. She made her debut in 1927's "Broadway Nights" when she was 18. She made many films and as she got older she received less offers. She went into television and had her own show "The Ann Sothern Show" which lasted from 1958-1961.

Later, she suffered from hepatitis which made her bloated so she preferred that no one saw her. Also she suffered from a back injury after a fall during a stage production which left her disabled.

Her ifnal film was in 1987, "The Whales of August". Her role led to an Academy Award nomination for best Supporting Actress.

She passed away from heart failure in Ketchum, Idaho on March 15, 2001.
