My Beauty Life: Natalia Vodianova

 Sian Ranscombe, beauty assistant

23 OCTOBER 2015

The Russian model known as ‘Supernova’ tells us why she owes it all to her granny... My grandmother is without a doubt my beauty icon and forms a part of my first, very vivid beauty memory. I was 13 and sitting in front of the mirror, plucking my eyebrows. She came up to me and told me I needed to stop. I said, ‘Why? They’re so annoying, I hate them!’ She said that if I plucked them too much, I would regret it for the rest of my life. It didn’t stop me plucking my eyebrows completely, but I did it less than I probably could have. So thank you, Granny!

My grandmother would wake up at 6am every morning, run in the park and cook lunch before any of us had got up. By 8am, she would have her red lipstick on and her incredibly long red hair up in a huge hairdo. She always wore jewellery and perfume – of course, it was all very modest because we were a very poor family, but to my grandmother beauty was so important. She’s really an incredible woman.

I also remember buying my first ever perfume at the airport – it was CK One. I used to go to the department stores as a much younger girl, before I became a model, and look at all the tester sizes of Chanel and Bulgari – at points, I dreamt about fragrance. It was so inaccessible to me. Spending so much money on this little bottle of perfume would have been such a waste, because I knew of so many better places I could have put my money. I could never treat myself to it, so finally being able to afford perfume meant so much to me. I think of money differently now. It can be a very rewarding experience to go and treat yourself to something.

I love jewellery and sometimes I treat myself by buying something I want. It’s funny, though, because most of the time – in fact, all of the time – my jewellery stays in a safe. But that makes it very special to me. I’m not someone who considers the total look of my outfit every day. I always wear the same basics – just like my beauty routine.

I don’t really have time to be very innovative with it, but of course I would always recommend spending time on your beauty routine if you can.

I’m a little bit upset with my hair. God gave me great skin, but I have to work really hard to take care of my hair – there’s a lot of it, but it’s very fine. Leonor Greyl Tonique Hydratant is great for my hair type. My skin can also be quite sensitive, so I can’t use creams or mousses to take off my make-up; it has to be something watery.

To fix myself up, I always use mascara and a little bit of lipstick. I love Charlotte Tilbury’s mascara, and Guerlain makes beautiful lipsticks.

I’m at my most confident when I’m at home with my children, but I love beauty and I think that good make-up is a great way of empowering women. I’m a mother of four, so I get tired quite often, but I have commitments I can’t cancel or postpone. No matter how tired I am, I have to go out there and perform. People don’t want to see someone who looks exhausted – they want to see someone full of energy. Make-up is my tool. I put on my make-up and I feel ready.

In Natalia's kit...

Natalia Vodianova launches philanthropy social app ‘Elbi’

Russian supermodel and philanthropist Natalia Vodianova presented Elbi — her new tech project set to disrupt the world of philanthropy — at the Dublin Web Summit on Nov. 3. Elbi allows the general public to support charitable organizations and projects using micro-volunteering and micro-donations.

“Elbi” is the phonetic combination of the letters ‘L’ and ‘B’. “Little actions that make a big difference,” Natalia explained from the center stage at the Web Summit.

The co-founder of the application is Timon Afinsky, a PR and new media specialist in London, where Elbi’s head office can be found in Covent Garden. The CEO of the project is Eugenia Makhline, who led Facebook in Russia, worked at Google, AOL and on other “Silicon” projects. Eugenia leads a team of 12 specialists.

Project development began in 2013 and the application went live in U.S. and British markets last month. The launch took place in New York at the Clinton Global Initiatives Foundation and was introduced by former U.S. President Bill Clinton himself.

The 2015 Dublin Web Summit marked the application’s official launch in Ireland.

According to Natalia, she has invested €3 million of her own money into Elbi. She also managed to attract an advisory board that includes such people as Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales, Huffington Post Co-Founder Arianna Huffington, Bebo Co-Founder Michael Birch, UK Minister for Internet Safety and Security Joanna Shields, Founders Forum co-founder Brent Hoberman, as well as other industry leaders as advisory board members.

The mission of Elbi is to engage social and digital worlds with charities and connect them with people around the world. As of today, Natalia says, it is not easy for charitable organizations to raise funds. Some people are turned off by administrative expenses and others by the lack of clarity as to where their donations go to.

But Natalia, who has been engaged in charity for more than 10 years and has raised more than €30 million for her Naked Heart Foundation knows first hand that no contribution is too small. She also noticed that sometimes it is your dollar that becomes the most important, not because of its monetary value, but because it launches the butterfly effect / domino effect that can produce positive change.

“Elbi brings the power of social and digital worlds to charities,” says Natalia.

FinBuzz met with Natalia after her speech at the Web Summit and talked about her new project.

Natalia, what exactly does Elbi provide for its users?

Absolutely everything you are used to doing on your phone: sending messages, taking photos, and drawing. With Elbi all these trivial little actions can make the world better. A month ago we launched a beta version with minimal functionality. We can say that now the project is in its growing stage. Our goal at the moment is to check how the idea works. We do not necessarily aim to increase the number of users right now. Today, the platform has partnered with 30 charities. The idea is that the charity organization gives some small task from the certain person they are helping: it may be a serious question from a young girl from Ghana about why women’s rights should be the same as the rights of men? It could also be a request from Dogs Trust to come up with a cool name for a puppy that was picked up on the street and is up for adoption. That name might increase the dog’s chances of being taken home, you know? It may be a request to send a photo of your country from a child who is sick and cannot travel. Users are involved in dealing with these little creative acts: they send pictures and answer questions. What is important is that it allows charities to raise awareness and people to learn more about what is happening in the world and to express empathy.

So that’s the emotional component, and where is the financial?

All user actions, whether drawing on a smartphone, snapping a photo, or answering a question are published in a feed, that is vaguely reminiscent of an Instagram feed. Other users may be so touched or inspired by your photo or creative commentary that they will decide to give you their “love” — that is a click with the heart on it. Each such click equals £1/$1/€1 which is directly donated to the charity or project.

So users have to provide their billing information?

Yes, the same way as on Facebook, Google, or anywhere else on the web. And then they can vote by giving. Every heart — is one pound (or dollar in the United States), which goes towards solving problems dealt with by the organization that provided the task. Charities report back on where donation money is spent.

Can individuals sign up to raise funds or is this option only available for charities?

Only the charities that have been vetted by the UK Charity Commission or the Charity Navigator in the United States can use that option to raise funds. It is important to note that the organization can be any size. We are working with Save the Children International — which is operating in 120 countries. But we also work with Dogs Trust or a small charity somewhere in Uganda. It is very important for us to give the same opportunities to large and small organizations alike. In any case, as a user you can learn about each child or cause you are helping. This is what is lacking in modern philanthropy — you donate, but do not know for what exactly, to whom, and how your money will help create a solution.

What is the target audience of the app?

We target millennials. It is the most socially engaged and emphatic audience. 83 percent of millennials have a smartphone and the same 83 percent of charities do not have a digital strategy. We are going to change the latter. Millennials — from ages 15 to 35, are of course a complex and diverse audience. But I can say that the interesting thing about Elbi is that it provides an engaging experience for the whole audience because it is emotionally rewarding for creativity, which isn’t age-dependent. My eldest son Lucas, 14, is studying in school and enjoys the app. I also know that my co-founder’s wife — in her 30s and a trader at a private bank — also loves spending time drawing on her way back from the office.

Let’s imagine that someone loves to use Elbi and collect hearts from their drawings or posts. As we know, the most popular content on social media is kittens, puppies, children, and women. How do you protect Elbi from people who want to use it not for charitable purposes?

We made sure that the platform was safe and child-friendly. At this stage users who perform tasks from charitable organizations and begin to collect “Love” donations can only perform three tasks a day. On the other hand for those who want to donate, everything is very simple. Two taps and their micro-donations go the project that they support by clicking the “Love” button. One dollar or one pound — it is not much, each of us can donate it once a day or a week towards something that is close to our heart. And most importantly — today’s technology allows us to do this via smartphones and on the go. That makes it extremely easy.

We noticed that the front page of Elbi app changes every day. Every day you post three new projects which give users tasks for the day. Who selects them?

We have a team that works with charities to help them make the content so that users are interested and want to help. Support isn’t only counted in pounds or dollars, but it helps to raise awareness and break down the barriers that exist between those who want to help and those who need help.

What percentage of donations covers Elbi’s administrative costs?

None. Elbi — it is not-for-profit. The application is available for download free of charge. For the moment we just run it and are not monetizing. But in the future we will focus on partnerships with large corporations and will help them manage their charity projects.

How exactly will that work?

In the future, brands and corporations will be able to offer a dollar or pound towards each dollar or pound donated by users for the project they support. For example, you donate £1 to ensure the solar panels in a Cape Town school are installed. So then Unilever, which carries out similar social programs, will match your donation. It will turn out that donating £1, you are actually sending £2. This provides a much-needed feedback mechanism for the companies that care about giving back to society. But to know what is trending and what they might need to match the brands and corporates will come to Elbi for insights and we will charge them for this data. We rely on using big data (confidentially of course) to help maximize the effectiveness of how companies manage their charitable budgets. This will be the source of funds for the development and growth of Elbi.

And how are you going to grow?

Right now, you can engage at the project level: you can see a cute dog drawn by Jane. You do not know Jane, but in the future you will be able to see her profile, what she does, what’s in her heart. Organizations, charity projects or volunteers, can provide information about themselves and find an interested audience. Unfortunately, existing social networks are not built for sharing what is close to your heart, and what you deeply care about. You cannot publish a post about the fact that you just donated to a cause (it would be perceived as bragging); also you cannot simply ask for help for the charity you support (it would be like “begging for money”). It’s amazing how little social media is used for making the world a better place for future generations. Elbi aims to change that.

It’s been one month since you’ve launched. Tracking user activity, which conclusions you can draw?

For me it is a pleasant shock how much time people are willing to spend to make their content on Elbi very, very good. When we tested the product, people were simply drawing and writing, but without much effort. But our real users are completely different – they understand that their drawing will be a present to a real child and will help fundraise for a real cause. Our “little actions big difference” mantra seems to be working.

Have you yourself invested in the project or do you act as the brand’s ambassador?

That’s the whole point! If you love something— you should put your money behind it. I strongly believe in my project and invested in it myself.

Are you looking into building another app? Like a fashion app? Fashtech is growing quickly…

No, I have never had a desire to make an app in fashion. I try to focus and now my focus is Elbi.

New app by Natalia Vodianova: 'Love' is better than 'Like'

Russian supermodel and philanthropist, Natalia Vodianova, is now also a startup co-founder and creator of a micro-charity app aimed at the millennials -- people aged 15-35 who cannot imagine life without their smartphones. The app hopes to “add meaning” to their online existence.

Elbi is an app that makes possible micro donations of £1 or $1 to charitable organizations all over the world, including Save the Children, Walkabout Foundation, Blue Skye Thinking and dozens of others. In addition, users can get involved with artistic projects to raise awareness for various causes.

“Elbi is a platform that brings the power of the social and digital worlds to charities and connects them with people around the world,’’ Elbi co-founder Natalia Vodianova told RBTH. “With Elbi your small actions can make a big difference.”

It took three years to develop Elbi, and the app is currently available only on AppStore in the U.S. and UK because developers believe these are the most charitable countries. In the coming months, however, the app will be available in Russia and elsewhere around the world.

A crocodile for a girl in Cape Town

Elbi users generate content themselves. They can draw letters for schoolchildren who are learning the alphabet in Uganda, send a few words of support to a child in a hospital in India, or invent a funny caption for sandwich packaging in Cambridge.

Micro-volunteering takes no more than three minutes, the Elbi homepage explains. Each day users are offered “three good deeds” to choose from.

For example, on Oct. 9, Ms Vodianova reposted one such assignment through her Facebook and Instagramaccounts:

“Thanks to Elbi, my drawing of a crocodile has made it to a girl in Cape Town called Yawa. It will help her to remember the fun time she had building croc-robots with the Children Helpers Worldwide fund.”

Can “Love” really change the world?

Drawings posted by Elbi can be tagged by pressing the Love button, similar to the Like button on social networks. Unlike the latter, which has more to do with massaging users’ vanity, the Love button on Elbi generates micro donations. The better the created content --- whether a photograph, a drawing or a get-well message --- the more Loves it gets in the form of more money raised for charity.

Elbi is also the name of a heart-shaped cartoon character that greets users and inspires them to do good deeds. It was created by Chris Meledandri’s team, which is known for the popular animated films, Minions, Ice Age, Despicable Me, and more.

Elbi’s other co-founder is Timon Afinsky, the head of Supernova. Ms Vodianova and Afinsky already collaborated in 2013 when they created the Donate a Smile app. For every selfie with a smile, 10 rubles was donated to the construction of children’s playgrounds in Russia. The project raised over 225,000 rubles. That one-off project showed that users are prepared to donate not only money but also their time to charity, thus inspiring the idea behind Elbi.

Charity for the smartphone generation

While an estimated 83 percent of millennials have a smartphone, the vast majority of charity organizations do not have an online strategy. Elbi provides charities with an easy-to-use digital tool, and also gives meaning to millennials’ online activity, said the app’s developers. The app was realized by a team of 12 developers in London headed by Eugenia Makhlin, who previously worked at Facebook, Google and AOL.

“Elbi is a true game-changer for charities and the causes they represent,’’ Makhlin told RBTH. ``We bring engaged, active audiences together in one place, enabling charities to find new supporters and drive engagement and donations through a range of easy-to-use tools.”

Elbi was launched in New York City on September 28 when Ms Vodianova introduced the new platform in the presence of Bill Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, Madeleine Albright, and other important guests. Elbi has been endorsed by many people including UK Minister for Internet Security, Joanna Shields, as well as Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, and co-founder of the Bebo social network, Michael Birch.

Supernova Natalia Vodianova Shows Us Her Naked Heart

While Natalia Vodianova was in town (N.Y.C.) to speak at the Clinton Global Initiative, because her new charity platform, Elbi, was one of the chosen few to have a shining moment, I got a chance to have a tête-à-tête with the Über-supernova model about her euphoric life within Calvin Klein and her Naked Heart Foundation.

“My new project, Elbi, was chosen!,” Natalia Vodianova enthused as she talked about getting an opportunity to speak about it at the Clinton Global Initiative. “Elbi is a platform that brings the power of social and the digital world to charities to connect with people around the world.” Because many charities do not have extra funding to build their own app, she found that many not-for-profit organizations are rather running behind and missing out on enriching social opportunities. That’s where Elbi comes in. It’s an app wherein people can gather, review charity partnerships, share the love, and support the cause—either by currency or through drawings. Yes, drawings! “Charity should be more than just clicking on a donate button,” she says with a frown. Call it “micro-philanthropy,“ in which small actions can make a huge difference in someone’s life in need and have a substantial impact.

As she walked me through the app, it was painfully clear that her heart bleeds to make a joyful difference in people’s lives, for the ones who are in desperate need because their situations are so die-hard, a place that echoes her aching past

“For example, this little boy’s name is Asawha, and he is in need cleft-lip surgery, but if you don’t have any money to donate you can submit a drawing to show your support for Asawha. Then the charity will choose various drawings that they love and will send them to Asawha, and, in return, for the ones who made the drawings, they will receive a photo of smiling Asawha. Furthermore, one can also pledge a dollar [or more] on a drawing, too, to endorse the art form and its support, which will directly benefit that charity. And that’s called a ’donor beneficiary connection’.” She was speaking of the three-way partnership with the Smile Train and for all who donated either in currency or through art. They get a photo back with a child’s progress—this is an operation on a very human level wherein all parties are really connected. “There’s an emotional reward. Others can endorse your actions…. It’s a bit like crowd-funding, but raising money on behalf of charity.” A charity with a lot of dignity at heart.

She’s come a long way from that first moment when she landed her very first Calvin Klein ad campaign, back in 2003, starting with underwear, naturally. She was 21.

“Euphoria fragrance campaign came as a joint contract with Calvin Klein Underwear, which was larger than life for me, especially at the time for me, for a young girl coming from a really difficult background. It was really ’euphoric,’ to say the least,” she reminisced. Fast-forward to now: Calvin Klein Euphoria fragrance is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a brand-new campaign, photographed and directed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, visualized on “Eternity Beach” on the island of Honolulu, Hawaii, where Vodianova is wearing—possibly—the longest dress ever made by a designer. “I needed 10 people to hold up the dress any time I had to move!“ Vodianova speaks adoringly of the house designer, Francisco Costas (click here to see making of the dress here). “He is one of the kindest, the greatest, most generous and wonderfully laid-back people I know…. He’s very easy to work with, a real collaborator, but he knows exactly what he wants.”

She transitioned from being an almost-teenaged mother (birthing her first child at age 19) to becoming a mother of four children (the first three with Justin Portman, and now, her youngest, with her current partner Antoine Arnault). Now that she’s 33, I asked her who she was back then and who she now sees in the mirror.

“I was always strong already back then, but in a different way…. I was less peaceful. Now, my strength is accompanied by a feeling of peace and almost to surrender. Surrendering to the fact that this is who I am, this hard-working creature who wants to do good. And the peace comes from the fact that I am able to do much good, because, early on, my life was so difficult…. When I was young, I built these habits, always fighting for something, not knowing what tomorrow will bring,” she explained in a very heart-felt tone. “You know, baggage can be tools. I’ve been able to divert them, my baggage into tools. When I became incredibly successful, I had a sense of wanting to do something, because modeling is limited in its ambitions, and I am an ambitious person but for something that made sense.” And that’s when her Naked Heart Foundation began in 2004, a not-for-profit organization that provides play facilities across Russia for underprivileged and disabled children, which is thriving each year.

Vodianova certainly acknowledges the amazing career she’s achieved, but she’s even more ecstatic because “today, this success completely supports this charity work that I am doing…. I am a quite a private person, but I understand why I am sacrificing this privacy.”

Come mid-October, there will be another Naked Heart Foundation moment in Sochi, Russia, where she will feature a music video that she wrote (loosely based on her mother and her disabled sister, Oksana), performed by the biggest Russian pop star, Dima Bilan (of course, she makes a cameo appearance in the video) and followed by a flashmob dance, #немолчи—a message to stop the discrimination of disabled children and families is all set to go.

With all that she has accomplished in such a short fairy-tale life of literally rags to riches, I ask her what the word “euphoria” means to her. With no hesitation, she declared, “Love! I associate euphoria with love, because, for me, it’s about loving something so much and being so happy. It’s about those loving moments in my life. Moments of celebration, like launching Elbi and being with all my children, special moments of dancing and being silly, moments that you just want to pause.”

Here’s a dictionary meaning of the word “euphoria“: a state of intense happiness and self-confidence.

I think we can all agree that Calvin Klein sure picked the right girl a decade ago.

And for that to happen, we must believe in this process and to show that we are strong.” - Natalia Vodianova, Naked Heart Foundation Founder, at the opening ceremony

Model Natalia Vodianova attends charity launch in Paris wearing a chic burgundy leather jacket and classy black dress

She splits her time between wowing on the catwalk and overseeing her charity -- the Naked Heart Foundation.

And now Natalia Vodianova, 33, has combined fashion and fundraising by launching the Preciously Paris X Naked Heart Foundation handbag at Colette Boutique, Paris, on Thursday.

The Russian supermodel stepped out in the French capital for the launch wearing a burgundy leather biker jacket over a long black dress.

She teamed the ensemble with a pair of black leather boots with a flash of red in the heel, complementing her jacket.

Natalia opted for minimal make-up to highlight her natural beauty. She wore her hair in a middle parting and her golden tresses rested gently on her shoulders.

Naked Heart Foundation was founded by Natalia in 2004 following the tragic Beslan School Seige which saw 331 men, women and children die after armed terrorists occupied a school for three days.

According to the Nakedheart.org, the charity funds projects run by Russian non-profit organisations that work with children with special needs and their families and children from socially at-risk groups, and provides them with psychological, legal, medical and social support.

The Clothesmaiden.com states that the charity teamed up with Carole Tessier, designer of Preciously Paris, to create the exclusive Rock’n Love clutch bag.

Profits from the sale of the bag will help support families raising children with special needs in Russia.

Natalia arrived carrying the luxury handbag with pride. The clutch combines a traditional Slavic design and tattoo motifs on a pearl grey background.

The limited production of the bag will see only 200 made. It's currently only available from the Colette website priced at £1,881,23.

Earlier this year, Natalia returned as the face of Calvin Klein's Euphoria fragrance ten years since her first contract with the designer.

She ranked number five on this year's Forbes World's Highest Paid Models List, earning an eye-watering $7.5million. She was only surpassed by Doutzen Kroes, Adriana Lima, Cara Delevingne and Gisele Bundchen.

Natalia Vodianova, Preciously Paris Present Handbag at Colette

CHILD’S GAME: Natalia Vodianova knows a thing or two about embroidery.

The model teamed up with Carole Tessier, founder of Preciously Paris, a Paris-based brand specializing in hand-embroidered jeans, bags and accessories set with precious and semi-precious stones, to design a handbag for the Naked Heart Foundation. The proceeds from the edition of 200 pieces will benefit the model’s children’s charity.

“Everything at Preciously is about the beautiful and delicate embroidery. My grandmother embroidered. She taught me how,” Vodianova, who matched the handbag with a black Givenchy dress and a burgundy leather jacket from Acne, said at the launch event at Colette in Paris on Thursday.

“It had to have lots of hearts in it,” Vodianova said of the pattern on the handbag, which was reminiscent of traditional Russian motifs. “I guess [the] heart is quite folkloric, but it’s very Naked Heart-ish.”

Tessier said each bag required 25 hours of work in Paris ateliers. “The handbag can be as rock ‘n’ roll for daytime as elegant at night,” she noted. Priced at 2,650 euros, or $2,850 at current exchange, it is available exclusively at Colette in Paris. It will go on sale at Le Bon Marché in Paris, Web site Nine in the Mirror and onhttp://www.preciouslyparis.com from Nov. 23.

Vodianova said the next big event for the foundation will take place in London on Feb. 20. “Last year I cohosted it with my friend Karlie Kloss. She has yet to confirm for this year. It would be hard to replace such a wonderful host as Karlie,” she said.

In the meantime, the mother-of-four is mulling Christmas gifts for her kids, including one-year-old Maxime. “He wants a Hoover for the holidays. He loves to Hoover,” she said with a smile.
