Why Natalia Vodianova Is So Much More Than a Supermodel

FEBRUARY 23, 2015 1:20 PM
by LIANA SATENSTEIN

Though she is almost 4,000 miles away in Paris, speaking through a static-ridden international call, model Natalia Vodianova still manages to radiate a rare sort of otherworldy warmness. You see, a typical phone interview with a model—especially one of Vodianova’s stature—means a strict talking-to beforehand from their agent, a designated time limit, a reminder of their client’s extremely busy schedule, the sudden suggestion that their client is actually boarding a flight and so your ten minutes might actually be five before the flight attendant steps in. This is not the case with Vodianova. There are no agents, no time limits—just an honest vibration in her voice that seems to weave in and out through the poor phone connection. But after all, aside from her many modeling accomplishments (gracing the cover of Vogue, a lengthy contract with Calvin Klein, an industry-wide obsession over her seeming agelessness and idealized features), the supermodel powerhouse is also the founder of the Naked Heart Foundation, a philanthropic organization that focuses on children with disabilities in Russia. Tomorrow, on February 24, Vodianova will be teaming up with Karlie Kloss (whom Vodianova describes as “a fresh person who is entering the world of philanthropy in a strong way”) to throw a fundraiser coined “The World’s First Fabulous Fund Fair,” in London to benefit the cause. With a guest list that includes the likes of designer Stella McCartney (on hand to make vegetarian hot dogs), Pat McGrath (face painting, of course), and Suzy Menkes (fashion fortune telling!), plus a photo booth with Jean-Baptiste Mondino, the event is sure to be star-studded. “It is turning out to be quite the fabulous fair. It’s definitely a fundraiser—and it is very glamorous,” Vodianova says. But that’s not exactly the point.

While some of her peers may lend their likeness to a charitable cause, Vodianova’s dedication to the Naked Heart Foundation is full-on. Rather than simply funnel in funds from her famous friends, the supermodel is on hand to set up modern, well-equipped facilities with tutors for children with disabilities, or to run a half-marathon before walking the runway (as she did in before she strutted for Givenchy in fall 2013) to raise awareness. And although she has set up more than 40 family support centers, along with more than 130 playgrounds for local children, Vodianova is quick to note that there is still much more to be done: In Russian cities, public transit or sidewalks are barely wheelchair accessible, while in small towns or villages navigating by wheelchair is virtually impossible. As a result, people with disabilities are often housebound, where they receive little if any education. Where there are facilities in Russia for children with disabilities, they often exist in poor conditions, while children’s homes are overcrowded and individualized care is not adequate. “In the end it comes down to bureaucracy.” says Vodianova, “The director [of these institutions] will use government funds to renovate the walls rather than injecting the funds into the children because she herself does not, herself, understand the value of these children.” The lack of proper care for children with disabilities is a cultural issue, the supermodel says, resulting in a deep stigmatization of disabled people. A lot of it comes down to visibility: “People don’t see children or people with disabilities on the street,” says Vodianova. “You rarely see someone who gets out.”

The Naked Heart Foundation is an organization that is close to home for Vodianova. Her younger sister, Oksana, has cerebral palsy, and their family grew up in a small, poor district of the city of Nizhny Novgorod. She is all too aware of other people’s perceptions when it comes to disabilities. “It is so deeply rooted in Russian mentality that [disabled] people do have not have potential, and that kind of becomes the reality,” says Vodianova. “I can say that from when I was little that it was very hard for my mother and myself. We loved Oksana, we spoiled her, we looked up to her, and we gave her a lot. But we didn’t fight for her future, for her education, or to be socialized. We were in an environment where we were not confident that it was not somehow our fault that Oksana was disabled.” But from that early experience have come hundreds of success stories: Vodianova gives the example of a boy named Nikita. “People thought he couldn’t respond to anything, but his teachers found a way to get him to focus,” she says. “He is learning how to read and write, and how to communicate very simply. This is just after one year! He isn’t just a child ‘who can’t be educated.’ ” As for her sister, Oksana, she became another success story. “Because people tell her she is valuable and treat her like a valuable person, she started to feel valuable, and started to contribute to everyday life and wanting to be independent,” says Vodianova. “This is just in two years, and it completely blows my mind . . . There is so much more work to be done!” It’s easy to see how Vodianova has earned her nickname, “Supernova”: The only difference between her and the celestial explosion seems to be that her energy never runs out.

Cara, Karlie, Natalia & Co. Whip Up a High-Fashion Carnival in London

Luke Leitch  Parties  February 25, 2015 — 06:11PM

Not long ago, Natalia Vodianova bumped into Karlie Kloss at a party in New York. As they chatted, recalled Vodianova, a line of people came up and politely asked for selfies: “And after about the 20th one, Karlie said, ‘You know, you should really open a booth and charge people, with all the money going to your foundation.’”

Lo, last night, that Kloss-catalyzed thought spawned a mighty (and mightily fun) party in London. The selfie booth had evolved into a kissing booth, and the concept had mushroomed into a carnival. But this was no ordinary funfair. Held in the Camden Roundhouse, its stalls were staffed by some of Vodianova’s fashion industry comrades, and all the proceeds, just as Kloss first ventured, went to Vodianova’s Naked Heart Foundation.

It was a cracking night. The excitement peaked when Taylor Swift dropped by with Cara Delevingne to check on the progress of Kloss’ Karlie’s Kookie stand. Even though they were wearing thousand-dollar dresses, guests gamely braved the helter-skelter, and a great many tokens were sold.

And yet a frisson of tension simmered beneath the smiles. For so compelling was the cause they were supporting—all money raised went to further the education of autistic children in Russia—that many of the staffers of Vodianova’s funfair seemed determined to raise more moola than anyone else. Take Lauren Santo Domingo, who ran the cotton candy stall with all the focus she uses to steer the fortunes of Moda Operandi. LSD was chillingly confident of having identified a killer niche. “Considering that everything else in here is either gluten-free or vegetarian, we are in a very good position—they are coming to us for the sugar. Sure, Suzy’s psychic game is strong, but I feel really good about providing raw sugar to the masses.”

But she was right to feel threatened by Suzy Menkes. The seasoned fashion correspondent reinvented herself for the night as a fortune-teller, complete with crystal ball. And the queue to watch Suzy stare into it was hefty, indeed. When my turn came to step into Menkes’ tent, this is what she said: “You should know that I am known—and have always been so—as Psychic Suzy. And I am able to tell, primarily from the colors that I am seeing, what is happening in your life…I get the sense that you are having some upheaval in your life—a break with the past—and that is not necessarily a bad thing.” So true! “You are definitely traveling. You have been traveling and you will continue to travel for quite some time.” Also so true! It was spooky stuff.

Once the spirit had left her, Menkes added: “I would do anything for Natalia Vodianova. I am leaving home at 4:30 a.m. this morning to go to Milan. And I wrote 2,100 words on my smartphone today. But for Natalia, well, if she asked me to stay all night and help, I would do it. She is a wonderful person and the cause is fantastic. There are so many people in the fashion world who never think of anything but themselves—and sometimes I am one of them. But Natalia is always thinking of other people.” And then Mystic Menkes ushered me from her presence.

Over at the ice cream stand, a pushy blond was hawking gelato like a pro—and seeing plenty of business come her way. In fact, Eva Herzigova once really was a gelato professional: As a kid in the Czech Republic, she spent a summer selling scoops. She said, “This is the Dior ice cream booth and we have unbelievable Italian gelato. Really tasty, especially the coconut. A tub is one token and a picture with me is two tokens.” OK, so what was doing better, ice cream or Eva selfies? “Right now it’s the photos—just about.” Fair enough: London is cold right now.

Just across the way, Stella McCartney was brazenly pushing her vegetarian hot dogs. “They’re the star of the show,” she insisted. “And we’re saving the planet, too.” Yes, yes, but what about condiments: Did she recommend ketchup or mustard? “I’d go for vegan mayonnaise.”

Stephen Jones was challenging all comers to knock his hats off a nut and win one. He was shedding headgear rapidly—including several designer collection prototypes—and the crowd bayed every time a tifter hit the sawdust. He said: “They are a raucous bunch. But I’ve known Natalia since her first season in Paris when she was modeling for Ungaro and I was working with Monsieur Ungaro. So when she called me up, of course I’m going to do it. Yes, it’s cost me a lot of hats—I think it’s going to be a bit thin on the ground for Ascot.”

Other stalls were just as busy. Louis Vuitton was thronged with punters trying to Hook-a-Duck and win an LV clutch. Ulyana Sergeenko was shifting pancakes, Pat McGrath was face-painting, Jean-Baptiste Mondino was operating the photo booth, and Daisy Lowe was hosting the Louboutin High-Heeled Olympics. But there was one obvious winner, one stall whose queue snaked longer than any other. It was Vodianova’s kissing booth. No surprise there, really.

Natalia Vodianova and Karlie Kloss Host the World’s First Fabulous Fund Fair

FEBRUARY 25, 2015 10:16 AM
by NATALIE RIGG

What better way to bid adieu to London Fashion Week than with a chic circus-inspired extravaganza at the Roundhouse in Camden? Hosted by supermodels Natalia Vodianova and Karlie Kloss, the hotly anticipated soiree enlisted some of the world’s foremost fashion houses and tastemakers to help raise funds for the Naked Heart Foundation—an international children’s charity founded by Vodianova in 2004.

A grand stairwell strewn with a colorful spectrum of balloons led guests into a large atrium with an assortment of attractions at its center. “Roll up, roll up,” cheered the wait staff, clad in natty shirts and braces, introducing partygoers to the Christian Louboutin hoopla, a Stella McCartney hot dog stand (veggie, of course), a Repossi treasure hunt, and Louis Vuitton’s prizewinning hook-a-bag. “Only Natalia [Vodianova] could pull this off,” revealed Kloss from behind her Karlie’s Kookies cart, dressed in a sleek black Maiyet dress and gold jewels. “I am very happy to be a part of something so wonderful and fun, and for such a worthy cause,” said the Vogue cover star, before pausing to snap a selfie with Derek Blasberg and Jacquetta Wheeler, who lit up flashbulbs with her embellished gold Temperley London dress.

“It has been an incredibly intense few months of organization, as you can imagine. But it feels amazing to be here now; it’s very rewarding,” explained Vodianova in a red satin Ulyana Sergeenko dress, while perched at the helm of her Guerlain-themed kissing booth. “I want everyone to have a really fun night,” she added. Unsurprisingly, the line of dapper chaps awaiting a kiss from the exquisite Russian beauty snaked all the way back to the Swarovski Fashion Fortune Telling Experience, where the renowned Suzy Menkes sat behind a crystal ball. Other buzzed-about attractions included a kooky coconut hat shy, dreamed up by British milliner Stephen Jones and the haute couture face-painting booth with makeup maestro Pat McGrath.

Role Model: Fair enough: Natalia Vodianova

It was not that I thought: Now it's time and I have to give back something to the world. I was young. The trigger was the tragedy in Beslan, where in 2004 a school was attacked. There were almost 400 dead, including 286 children. That shocked me. I called my first fundraiser in New York with Diane von Furstenberg to life. She was my first big supporter. With the money I wanted to build a playground. I've been trying to reach the government in Beslan, but it was hopeless. We were able to open the playground until five years later.

Why a playground?

The children in rural Russia are confronted daily with problems and this they must somehow escape. I also come from one of these areas and know the feeling. I think games is a wonderful form of therapy - without actual therapy.

By now, you were able to fund 136 playgrounds of the donations. As you might initially not build in Beslan, they opened their first in your hometown Nizhny Novgorod - personally, as well as all the others. What is proceeding in you?

It was an incredibly fulfilling event. There were 4,000 families and all were children.

They could escape this life, signed her first modeling contract at age 17 and went to Paris. A Contrast program ...

Definitely. Coming from a neighborhood like mine, it is branded. It is difficult for a human to break out of this environment. It will be retained. It was very difficult for me. When I arrived in Paris, I was honestly just happy. I could start a new life.

Was this new world is not difficult for you?

I was just happy! My mother was a single parent, my sister needed a special promotion and we were extremely poor. Many children were mean to us. I have worked since I was 11 and my mother supported, where we could. And of course, also suffered from my school below. I did not believe in me. I was a tomboy and I have constantly defended himself. When I went to Paris, all the people were nice to me at a time. They told me I was pretty, smart, interesting. That was crazy. It took, but I have learned that there are people who really like me and not only seek to exploit. Paris has changed me.

You have children. What is the most important thing you want to give to you on the way?

I hope that they learn to work hard. I think that is the most important thing in life. No matter who you are or who you want to be. It just makes a huge difference when you know what we need to do everything possible to achieve what you want.
