In early 2010, previously anonymous Australian banker David Kiely was thrust into the limelight – and into a disciplinary hearing at the investment firm where he worked – when TV cameras filming a colleague next to his desk caught him staring at pictures of an underwear-clad Victoria’s Secret model on his computer screen, and streamed the footage live to millions of viewers.

Her career

The model? Miranda Kerr. And Kiely’s eventual punishment? Nothing – after all, how could his bosses follow through on their initial threats of dismissal when the lovely Kerr came to Kiely’s rescue, telling international press that she hoped ‘his bosses wouldn’t come down too hard on him’, and offering to sign the ‘Save Dave’ petition making the Internet rounds. Plus, no one could really fault Dave: if Orlando Bloom – now Miranda’s husband and father of their son Flynn – couldn’t resist her, how could a bored banker from Sydney be expected to? Kerr’s beauty – clear, bronzed skin, startling blue eyes, lean limbs and a mane of lustrous hair – has had her reaching far greater heights than Kiely’s computer screen. She’s been on the cover of the world’s top magazines, walked the runways of the hottest designers, been both the face of Maybelline and a Victoria’s Secret Angel and ranked among the top 10 on the Forbes list of Top Earning Models for several years in a row. Not bad for a farm girl who admits she was ‘reluctant’ to get into modelling in the first place! Miranda’s launch into the industry was at the age of 13, when she won the annual Dolly Magazine/Impulse Model Competition in 1997. A photoshoot for the magazine followed, but, she told Madison magazine: ‘I was like, “Meh, models, they’re like this or like that”, which was totally wrong on my part. But I just felt like I wanted to do something with a bit more substance.’ By then her family had moved to Brisbane – parents Therese and John wanted Miranda and brother Matthew to experience city life – and, after completing school, Miranda turned down the offer of a modelling contract in New York in order to study nutrition and health psychology at the Academy of Natural Living (more on that later!). ‘I was always more focused on school,’ she said. ‘Even after graduating, I still wasn’t that interested in modelling. It was just something I did here and there, and then I went to Japan, and well ...’ The ‘and well’ part of that equation is where things heated up: she became a runway favourite, and print campaigns soon followed. Endorsement offers started streaming in (she’s currently the face of Australian brand David Jones): modelling agent Ursula Hufnagl called Kerr ‘the perfect endorsement’ and celeb photographer Russell James said that ‘the US has fallen in love with her.

Girl-next-door

‘We love her because she has the most incredible girl-next-door look and she’s also insanely beautiful. It means women are not intimidated by her looks and guys think they might be able to talk to her. It’s a fantastic combination ... people want to be around her; she’s fun on a shoot ... and she’s not stupid, which can be a very annoying trait among some models,’ James added. In fact, saying that she’s ‘not stupid’ is a little like saying she’s ‘not unattractive’ – an understatement of note. Combining business acumen with a strong belief in a healthy mind-body connection (stemming from her Academy of Natural Living student days) and a desire to create a range of products that she’d happily use on her own body, Kerr launched the organic skincare line, Kora, in 2009. Available online , the range has been a hit among those seeking organic skincare. Kerr has expanded the company’s brand to include self-improvement tips, advice on mindful, healthy living, and regular input from the likes of Deepak Chopra (who collaborated with Miranda on her first book, Treasure Yourself, which was published last year). In a recent TV interview, Australian reporter Charles Woolley asked Miranda how she felt about earning more money than a cancer researcher, to which she responded: ‘It baffles me, what can I say?’ But, she added, modelling had given her a face to which she hopes to add an influential voice, using her fame (and fortune) for the benefit of others. Already a fierce supporter of Wildlife Warriors Worldwide and Children International, Miranda has also joined up with Kids Helpline Australia, promoting their teen suicide prevention project Too Many Too Soon. ‘What they do for the young people in Australia literally cannot be fathomed,’ she said of the organisation. With the birth of her son Flynn in January – who she revealed to the world in a gorgeous Twitter photo – the joy and possibilities that await children if they’re given the right support have become even closer to her heart. ‘What if we could again look at life through the eyes of a child and see only limitless possibility?’ she wrote on her blog. ‘What if we could live in every moment being present to who we are and what we have to offer this world? How different would our world be?’
