She was bitten by the acting bug while she attended the Henry Street Settlement. Melonie also attended the Professional Performing Arts High School. Her mother and father are both of Puerto Rican decent. She has one older sister and is very close with her family. She started her career with 2001's Double Whammy, and later landed roles in independent films such as 2002's Raising Victor Vargas. Her performance as Laurie in the 2006 film A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints earned her a Independent Spirit Awards nomination for Best Supporting Female.
