Ida Rubinstein

Featured Replies

Ida Rubinstein (1885-1960) was a Russian dancer, actress, and arts patron who became one of the most striking cultural figures of the early 20th century. Born into a wealthy Jewish family in Kharkiv (then part of the Russian Empire), she used her fortune to support ambitious artistic projects and collaborate with leading composers, choreographers, and designers.

Rubinstein became an icon through her performances with Ballets Russes, where she appeared in productions such as Cléopâtre and Schéhérazade. Although not considered a technically accomplished ballerina, she was celebrated for her dramatic presence and exotic stage persona.

She later formed her own dance company. Rubinstein's patronage helped shape modern ballet and musical theater, making her an influential figure in European cultural life.

She spent her later years largely out of the public eye and died in Vence, France, in 1960.
