Born Antonio Esteve Ródenas in Elda, Spain, he rose from a working-class background to become a celebrated flamenco dancer, choreographer, and artistic innovator who helped bring flamenco to international audiences.Gades developed a distinctive style that combined the intensity and authenticity of traditional flamenco with modern theatrical storytelling. He was the first artistic director of the Ballet Nacional de España, founded in 1978, and is widely regarded as a pioneer who transformed Spanish dance into a major contemporary stage art.
