DIEMANNEQUINAZ
Vogue Italia (Article) Afef Jnifen has inherited the incredible charm of her homeland (Tunisia) but she has still been able to answer with elegance, and surely with intelligence, to an international taste. The rise of her career has contributed in strengthening the imaginary of Arab woman. L'Oréal choose her some years ago as a spokesperson and, for their next campaign, the brand is using once again a North African beauty: Leila Bekhti, Algerian-French actress, a star in the making, also present at Cannes as the protagonist of La source des femmes, picture directed by Radu Mihailenau about the rebirth of Maghreb women. We have to admit with pleasure that in movies Arab and Middle Eastern women are slowly taking over, revealing the dramatic strength that often comes from being left aside or being considered too close-minded. And what about fashion, a very thorny environment in which the eastern European population seems to have taken over? There are Arab models and the first step to not let them go unnoticed is learning their names. The most requested one at the moment is Hind Sahli. She was born in Rabat in 1990 and made her debut 19 years later in New York walking for BCBG Max Azria. It was triumphant, and since then we’ve seen her in every season on the runways of the four biggest centers of fashion. Plus, in May 2010, Steven Meisel photographed her for Vogue Italia. Could she become a top model? The forecast is almost obvious. Also from Morocco: Soraya Azzabi and Oumaima Eljid, representative of the eastern realm at the finale of the Elite Model Look World 2010 competition. Remaining in North Africa, but moving slightly to the East we meet the Algerian Amina Kaddur. And if Maghreb in Arabic means sunset, in the language of fashion it represents instead a new dawn. The maison Azzaro chose Tunisian Sabrina Ben Amor to represent half of the last winter collection. During the same season, Sana Soegaard Belal walked for Blumarine; her beauty comes half from the Arabian country, homeland instead of cover girl Kenza Fourati. And if we are talking about the spring of beauty in Islamic countries, our journey continues by moving also to the Middle East. Azra Akin, Miss World 2002 comes from Turkey (which, actually, is not really an Arab country), but also Tulin Sahin, model who is also called the "Turkish Cindy Crawford" for looking incredibly like the famous top model. There’s lots of work to be done so the new versions of Afef, Cleopatra and Nefertiti can emerge, but we can’t but hope that there will be many girls answering fashion’s next call in September.
