Monday at 09:45 PM2 days Robert Mapplethorpe is known for his controversial work as a photographer, and also as the former partner of Patti Smith. He dated Patti Smith for a long time. It was passionate at first, but gradually evolved into something more platonic and artistic. Although they broke up, they never lost sight of each other. Mapplethorpe eventually discovered his attraction to men, which deeply influenced his art. Sam Wagstaff became both his lover and mentor, guiding him through his artistic journey. Unfortunately, protection against HIV/AIDS was lacking at the time, and Mapplethorpe passed away from the disease. Before his death, he asked Patti to write about their story, and she immortalized it in her book "Just Kids".Mapplethorpe’s art is infused with his Catholic roots. Some of his works reflect the mystery and magic he associated with religion during his childhood. There’s often a blend of angelic and devilish elements in his photography. He captured the delicacy of black-and-white floral still lifes, but also explored his sexuality by photographing male nudes and incorporating New York’s BDSM subculture into his work. He also portrayed many celebrities of his time. He clearly mastered a luxurious, tonal style.I think his face had an androgynous, almost angelic quality that perfectly matched the essence of his art. His eyes were soft, round, and blue, which gave him a certain sweetness. But his strong eyebrows, pronounced brow bone, and sharp jawline added a sense of seriousness. You see a sort of angelic and demonic mix in his features. The contours of his face were a compelling mix of strength and softness.
